I think you have hit the nail on the head. Father Jonathon Morris is now frequently on Fox News to combat tirades against the Church. He is mild-mannered, polite and accurately portrays what comes from the Vatican. I always agree with what he says BUT it is not memorable.

When Bill Donahue throws a hissy fit, I remember. And I guess the detractors do too, lest there would not be a campaigne to get rid of him. When he retires, I hope there is one just like him to continue to fight for the Church.
I’ll bet you dollars to doughnuts that the same people who dislike Donahue also dislike Fr. Morris.

I note that he is referred to here as ‘a rough Irish Catholic’ and a ‘salty Irishman’ - as if this was a justification for his behaviour - but could I point out, as someone who is both native Irish and Catholic, that Bill Donohoe may have Irish heritage/ancestry but he is neither an Irishman nor an Irish Catholic.
The native Irish don’t even know what it means to be Irish, all I met in Ireland were West Britons who within one hundred years of winning back their freedom sold it again to their new masters in Brussels for some Euro’s, Dublin could be any European city there is nothing Irish about the place save the statues, it has all been replaced by the plastic paddy culture of guinness and leprechauns.

Dublin isn’t Ireland.

But even if it was, the irony of someone from the UK lecturing me on what it means to be Irish is just delicious.

And at least we got to vote on joining the Common Market…I don’t recall hearing that any of my ancestors ever got the opportunity to cast a vote about joining the British Empire.

The fact that you all voted for it just proves my point.

Nah…that would be you 😛

Which reminds me…can we get back to the subject of the thread, now?
No that would definitely be you when you set yourself up as the judge of who is and isn’t Irish, it was a totally arrogant position to set yourself in and offensive to the millions of Irish who don’t happen to be “natives” and so are, according to you not Irish.

The natives who you are so proud to be a member of have done more to make Ireland English in the less than one hundred years they have governed than the English themselves could achieve in 8 centuries of occupation.

There was an Irish nation before there ever was an Ireland, and there would remain an Irish nation if the whole of Ireland was to sink into the sea tomorrow.

You’re the one who has set yourself up as the arbiter of the Irishness of those actually born here. I merely pointed out the FACT that Bill Donohoe is not Irish, he was not born in Ireland, he is not a citizen of Ireland, he is not an Irishman. He has Irish ancestry and Irish heritage, but he is an American, born and raised. There are millions of people of Irish ancestry all over the world, many of them have Irish passports by virtue of it, but they take their nationality from the country of their birth. Why would anyone be offended by my stating that fact?

Yes, I am very proud to be Irish and I never apologise to anyone for actually having been born and raised here, or for having ancestors who were lucky enough to have survived without having to emigrate. And if you think that Ireland became ‘English’ only in the last 90 years, you have a poor enough grasp of the history of this island.

Now, can we PLEASE get back to the subject of this thread? Take your beef to PM, if you wish, or start another thread, but let;s not hijack this one any further.

I see you have even adopted the modern English legal definition of what makes a person a member of a nation.

Well, the article makes some strong and accurate criticisms of Donahue. I don’t know if they rise to the level of requiring him to resign, however.

I don’t know why folks are discussing the article author.
It is easier to play the victim than to admit there is a problem.

Yep, it seems a bit strange. Donahue is often embarrassing, but sometimes he is spot on. I don’t think he should resign. Rather, I think the public needs to realize that sometimes he is correct, and sometimes is making off the wall criticisms.
Bill Donohue is as New York as you can get. He takes no BS from anyone, and if you try to give it to him, he will call you on it with no hestation. He is completely unafraid of standing up for what he believes in, and cowers to no one. Of course the Left is going to hate him. They can’t get to him no matter what they do.

I love him and would love to clone him many times over!

Bill Donohue Must Resign, For The Good of American Catholics
While minding one’s own business is often considered a virtue, when the chaos from a neighbor’s house spills into your own yard you are afforded the option to say something. In the case that I raise today, a certain man has been allowed to run about like a feral child in the playground of the media, spouting nonsense and threats for quite long enough. I say on behalf of reasonable-minded people everywhere (both skeptics and believers), that Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, needs to be reined in before he completely destroys the reputation of the Catholic Church in the United States.

The Holy See has been through a rather rough patch in the last few years. Unfortunately one of their most public representatives during this time of difficulty has been a man whose actions are indefensible. Mr. Donohue could not have broached the national media arena at a worse time for the church. While the Vatican is in crisis around the world, with the Pope himself calling for change and penance, Bill Donohue has been happily kicking the hornet’s nest with a vigor unabated by either logic or circumstance.

I am sure the Huffington post believes the best spokesman for the Catholic Church would be Nancy Pelosi. If they want Donohue to resign he must be doing a good job.

No problem…cheap entertainment. 😉 As long as no countries are going to war, there is nothing wrong with a little UK-Ireland brawl…however, that is what football is for, isn’t it? 😃
:rotfl:

We’d have been very confused here in Ireland if England had met France in the first round of the World Cup…😃
