:rotfl:

We’d have been very confused here in Ireland if England had met France in the first round of the World Cup…😃
Well, our parish priest is from Ghana…we’ve been very cordial, pro-Ghana, threw a Ghana-themed party for him after our Corpus Christi procession. It all changes tomorrow! 😃

Yeah, nothing like international football to define allegiances 😃

I consider myself pretty MOR and every time I’ve heard the man speak I thought it was a bad joke. He’s like a walking version of The Onion whenever he talks.

I see no reason to think that the Huffingtonpost is actually concerned about what’s good for American Catholics. Leftists, pagans and anarchists (some claiming to be spiritual in a vague, undefined kind of way) think that things are going their way. I’ve read them implying that theism is fading and a new very loud, brash and xtreme nothing in particular is coming along to replace it. Problem is, even non-Christians are beginning to notice that things are getting out of hand.

Mr. Donohue, regardless of his faults, is telling it like it is.

And the Left is obsessed with one thing: power, real or imagined. If they perceive Bill Donohue to be a threat and the leader of a ‘power base’ then he must be denounced on a regular basis. This is Standard Operating Procedure.

God bless,
Ed

May God bless Bill Donohue, and grant him a long life and a happy afterlife

The native Irish don’t even know what it means to be Irish, all I met in Ireland were West Britons who within one hundred years of winning back their freedom sold it again to their new masters in Brussels for some Euro’s, Dublin could be any European city there is nothing Irish about the place save the statues, it has all been replaced by the plastic paddy culture of guinness and leprechauns.
Collins is rolling in his grave.

That they sold the sovereignty he gave his life for? He’s doing something, but it ain’t laughing.
Irish sovereignty is quite intact, thank you.

And he didn’t give his life for it, anyway. He was killed during the Civil War by his former comrades.

What he did believe in was Ireland’s right to self-determination. He would be laughing at the irony (and arrogance) of anyone outside the country criticising the Irish for making democratic decisions about their own country

An Irish man living in Ireland has to obey the laws of the EU and you expect anyone to believe Irish sovereignty is still intact?

According to you De Valera was not even Irish, says everything really

That will become apparent if they try to secede.

They got rid of their best man.

The contradiction between self-determination and selling one’s sovereignty wouldn’t be lost on MC. My prize possession is my grandfather’s service medal from the Anglo-Irish War.

Well, as Collins was prepared to sacrifice six Irish counties for the sake of limited freedom for the other 26, I think he would understand about hard and difficult choices - and that those choices have consequences.

But let them be, they’re dead and gone,
They’re with O’Leary in the grave.

Collins knew that was as far as the British were prepared to go. So did Dev. That’s why Collins and not Dev negotiated the treaty. Collins took what he could get and had every intention of keeping up the pressure. He loved his country and both sides knew it and showed up en masse for his funeral.

Wow, are we really talking about the subject of the threat, or is the subject of the thread about heritage? It would be nice so as to not derail the thread completely.

Anyway, a thought I had about Bill Donohue…anyone see anyone else fighting for the Catholic Church in this country the way he does? I don’t. As for me, I can take a little “in your face” persona as long as he is fighting for truth, and against persecution of Catholics in this country… and he is most definitely doing that!! Besides that we need a little of his no nonsense approach as the majority of Catholics in this country just roll over and play dead. It’s the “turn the other cheek” philosophy, which I think is really misunderstood. After all, Jesus was not a wimp.

I soooooooo agree:thumbsup:

Well, the article makes some strong and accurate criticisms of Donahue. I don’t know if they rise to the level of requiring him to resign, however.

I don’t know why folks are discussing the article author.
You complain about ad hominem, but understanding the author is part of understanding the article. He has a bias born of his anticatholicism. If Westboro Baptist Church issued a statement that Bill Donohue is burning in Hell, would we not be right to consider who was making the statement?

This man that passes for a religious editor on this website calls Donohue, “a feral child in the playground of the media, spouting nonsense and threats…” Wilhelm shows in this his condescending nose. Then this writer states, “I say on behalf of reasonable-minded people everywhere…” He speaks for reasonable-minded people about as much as I speak for NASA. If he was reasonable-minded then he would know that he lacks the credentials to write this article. One simply cannot claim to be a spokesperson for a group that one is not actively associated with.

Let us look at other stupid parts of the article:

“Unfortunately one of their (The Holy See’s) most public representatives during this time of difficulty has been a man whose actions are indefensible.” :rotfl: I don’t even know what to say about such an ignorant statement. Wilhelm thinks Donohue is a representative of the Holy See??? :rotfl: I guess if Wilhelm represents reasonably minded believers any thing is possible in the world between his ears.

Let us continue:

He consistently speaks for people who have not chosen him and do not finance him, and he does them no justice by presenting his opinions as the consensus view of this nation’s Catholic population. It is for this offense, in addition to the content of his unctuous remarks, that I publicly call for his resignation." Can we all say, pot meet kettle?

While on the topic of hypocricy:

Donohue also suffers from a strong case of hubris.

I do not agree with everything Donohue does, but my goodness, what a ridiculous article from an unqualifed writer. Nothing that Donohue has done makes me think he should resign, even though I am sure anticatholics everywhere would join in the clamor. In any case, it is no one’s business, except those that support this organization and its goals, something which Wilhelm obviously does not.

Do you think dealing with anticatholics is unrelated to his heritage?

Irrespective of his intentions Donohue is doing the Catholic Church no favors with his biased and ignorant dismissal of the priest sex abuse scandals in Ireland. As for biased reporting against him, I suggest that interested persons listen to or watch his interviews and judge the man for themselves.

Only Irish citizens are Irish. Others are of Irish descent. This is true of all countries in the world. Those not living in Ireland have no business criticizing Ireland’s decision to join the EU, which was an economic decision made by a nation which has endured chronic poverty.
