Bill Maher Strikes Again

Ed, in case I wasn’t clear, when he did Politically Incorrect, IIRC, many of his shows had nothing to do with religion. It’s like David Letterman or Stephen Colbert. Sometimes they make religious jokes; other times they make non-religious jokes.

Now SEPARATE from their comedy acts and usually outside of their shows, they may do some commentary. It’s rare for Letterman and Colbert to do that (Leno does a little more), but Maher does it occasionally for instance on his appearance on Huckabee – that was serious talk, not a comedy gig.

Maher is actually a stand up comedian.

It’s unfair to him to take something from a comedy routine and present it as serious commentary.

There’s plenty of things he has said outside of comedy which you can attack him on. Do that. On Huckabee for example, he did say religious people in his opinion suffer from a neurological disorder. Huckabee wanted him to clarify if he thought religious people were crazy or insane and that was his response (i.e. not insane, just neurologically disordered). That was a very civil and polite discussion. It’s the same as if you were discussing with a homosexual and you told him that homosexual desires were intrinsically disordered and he was suffering from a intrinsic psychic disorder (which is the church teaching). On Huckabee’s show Pastor Huckabee – fundamentalist pastor – told Maher how much he liked him even though he disagreed with his views. That’s what we need. Respectful disagreement and Maher and Huckabee are both good examples to follow.

Maher only seems disrespectful if you present a comedy routine as a serious commentary. Quote something from his appearance on Huckabee, not from a comedy show.

I mean this would be like trying to show that Stephen Colbert was a jerk or racist based on his show where he made fun of Rosa Parks on a day celebrating her memory.
Well, as a person who works in the media and studies it daily as head of research for my company, I can tell you there is no such thing as a stand-up comedian anymore. Not on mass market outlets.

At one time, comedy was about making jokes. Most relatively harmless until a man named Don Rickles decided to add some insults to his “act.” Then Richard Pryor and others appeared who crossed the profanity line.

No. I don’t think amateur Bible scholar Whoopi Golberg had any business “explaining” Leviticus to her audience as part of her “comedy.” It was clear her concern was to discredit the Bible, not to get people to laugh, which, traditionally, comedians did.

I watched Politically Incorrect. I know what Mr. Maher is up to. The movie he appears in is just a let’s mock religion piece. He does stand-up mockery, not comedy.

There are various anti-defamation groups out there. Mr. Maher shows a lack of respect for civilized culture and his guests when he mixes profanity with his analysis. I am 100% against normalizing profanity in this country. It debases the language and it damages the cause of respectful understanding of different groups who have disagreements with each other.

Peace,
Ed

When I referred to him as a stand-up comedian I was thinking of how he does live stand up performances. Recently he has done one in Vegas, for example.

They still do broadcast stand-up on TV on Comedy Central.

I watch that show whenever I see it on, it’s pretty funny. I remember one time when he gave insight into why he bashes Catholics so much, apparently he was raised Catholic. So his beef seems to come from somewhere in his own upbringing.

As for the quote that says HBO will protect any class other than Catholics, that couldn’t be further from the truth, HBO attacks every class, it’s what they’re most known for.

But his show is a topical-comedy show. They discuss whatever is in the news. He makes fun of anything that comes up. So just because the topic happened to be about a Catholic doesn’t mean that he was being unfair to Catholics and singling them out. It seems like a petty thing to complain about.

Hello Hobble,

I suggest you contact one of the anti-defamation leagues. Take your pick, Arab, Jewish or the Catholic League. Ask them what they consider petty.

Mr. Maher is not funny, he is promoting a foul and decadent mind set. I am aware of his formerly Catholic background and how his parents decided to quit. I pray he has a change of heart.

Peace,
Ed

IMO, the Catholic League complains in order to get more donations. If they don’t rile up Catholics, … the donations would probably dry up more. It’s a shame. If the Catholic League hadn’t complained or made a fuss about a student and a consecrated host (which was returned by the student voluntarily), then a university science professor probably wouldn’t have desecrated other consecrated hosts along with the Koran and along with the God Delusion. I doub’t though that Bill looks back and wonders if he erred there. I want to be hoepful, but I feel that either he is sincere and very bitter or he is similar to another Bill.

That is wrong. The Catholic League created a problem? No. This individual felt justified in doing something wrong.

All human beings should be treated with dignity and respect. That’s why I believe the Catholic League is doing very necessary work in pointing out people who violate the civil peace. If anyone wants to call themselves civilized then they should be civil to others.

Peace,
Ed

So, can that be used as an excuse to hurl racist remarks at blacks or sexist remarks at women? I don’t think so.
Yes, it can. Have you ever seen the Chapelle Show?
Actually, religion, sex, race, and politics are some of the most common themes used in comedy.

Stephen Colbert in his comedy gig Colbert Report on Comedy Central says “racist” things sometimes. I already mentioned this … is it that unbelievable? Here is the video.

As I said it is all comedy. If you take it seriously, you’ll get offended. Lighten up 🙂

Scripture is quite clear on how we should all be reacting to this…I would humbly refer us to :

Matthew 5:44
Luke 6:28

While it may not be easy, we must practise what we preach.

May God Bless and keep (and guide) Bill Maher.

Mike
You know, it’s entirely possible to love your enemy and still be angry with him/her. That said, I find Maher’s comments to be disgusting.

Lighten up does not apply to uncivil remarks. There was a time when comedy was not offensive but, over time, I watched it become perverted.

No Catholic should lighten up over endless sex jokes, tasteless remarks and an encouragement toward uncivil behavior. Such thoughts should be banished from the airwaves.

Ok, he does not promote atheism. I watch his show every week and I have never seem him actually PROMOTE atheism.
It’s freedom of the press, freedom of speech, whichever first amendment right he wants to use, it’s his right.
You can ignore him. My would you bother listening to him? If you don’t like what he says, you know listening to him is just going to make you angry. So why bother?
Bill Maher may be bashing Catholics, but everybody is just bashing him back. Why stoop to his level?
It is possible to abuse the right of free speech, you know, and this is an abuse. There is no right to obscene speech, there is no right to slander. There is not right to treason or sedition.
He is getting away with this because Catholics are not using legitimate means to stop him. This is very provocative stuff.
If he were to say this to me to my face, I would belt him in the mouth without much anger. He should stop this.

Bill Maher simply preaches to his own choir. He is an idiot and a non-intellectual. Noone but his own fans (and himself) take him seriously.

I , too, agree that William Donahue has zero credibility. He has a big mouth and a style that simply disgusts. Most of the anti Catholic “crisis” that he harps about would just wither and die if he would only keep his big mouth shut. I would never support the Catholic League as long as he is the spokesman.
As a member of the Catholic League from California, I like what Bill Donahue is doing. It’s about time that we have a spokesman that has the “B__s” and fight back. It’s better that we have a shouter than a shooter.
I rather have a big mouth than some of those of the Muslim radical left that would have taken Bill Maher out a long time ago. With up to 70 million Catholics in this country there is bound to be a couple of Nut cases that would defend the catholics at any costs.
So be careful. Remember the Crusaders were all catholics.
Aloha.

Christianity shows its greatness when it is hated by the world… Saint Ignatius … third Bishop of Antioch d. 110 AD

someone with so much hatred can’t be a healthy person. He has some problems for sure. His name is Maher (skilful in Arabic) and he’s skilful at showing his psychological problems, that’s if it weren’t something bigger. Maybe people must simply ignore him as if he were saying nothing.
