Me and my girlfriend are trying hard to overcome sexual impurity. Up to this point its been very tough trying to resist. Meaning we’ve been giving in. My concern is a pregnancy might result from another night of losing control. I just recently went to confession. Is it morally ok to use contraception if having already committed the sin of fornication for the purpose of preventing pregnancy? I’m almost sure that it isn’t, however it seems like it would be better to not have a child out of wedlock than to have one, assuming that the sin of fornication was already committed. Please pray for me and help me out on this one!

Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes. Of course, I know both are gravely wrong. The question im having is this: is it better to be open to life outside of marriage in the case of fornication? Or in the case of fornication is it better to let a baby be born out of wedlock. (again, knowing that both fornication and contraception are mortal sins).

Use of contraception is a sin and fornication doesn’t somehow make it ok.

Don’t resign yourself to the one sin, and definitely don’t use your resignation to the one to justify the other.

Found this on another thread on a similar topic basically stating this: It would be nice to have a statement regarding sex outside of marriage that goes something like “You aren’t supposed to have sex out of wedlock, but if you do, it must be unitive and ordered toward procreation”

I’d have to agree with Reb on this one.

As for your child out of wedlock question: Always be open to life. Father will Baptize a baby born out of wedlock.

Beyond that: Just pray your way out of the temptation to fornicate.

Understood. I don’t plan on doing either. But for the sake of clarity we should believe it is better to be open to life even in situations where abortion is not the end, and the couple has fornicated?

Neither is “better”
Do you love and want to marry the girl? If not, why are you having sex with her?
If you don’t want to marry her, why are you leading her on?

You should avoid sins. The use of contraception is a sin. The sinfulness of contraception is not contingent upon the sinners’ being married; it is sinful in and of itself. Ergo…

Ok thank you all for you sincerity and help! Michael16 that was a much needed response.

get married. Solves all you problems. If you lover her enough to have sex with her you should love her enough to marry her and raise your children together.

However I want to ask a similar question. If in the act of fornication, are we saying you should finish in the vagina for the sake of openness to life as well? I know these seem like really tacky questions but theyre honest.
Again, the sinfulness of it is not contingent upon the marital status of the persons. One should sin as little as possible. In no way does the sin of fornication somehow undo other sexual sins.

There is an easy way to fix this. Never be alone together. If haven’t the will to resist temptation get someone to chaperone. Alone time is obviously not good for you or her.

That’s a little asking if it’s a sin to eat a steak with the proper knife and fork after stealing it from the restaurant.

That’s the thing with sin: it multiplies and proliferates, and it leads to increasing chaos and confusion.

Plan B? Contraception is intrinsically evil all by itself. You realize the way it works is of fertilization has happened it will cause a very early abortion.

You can’t “un sin” by committing another grave sin or two.

actually it does not prevent early abortion. If you take it while pregnant it is ineffective. But of course it is intrinsically evil.

??? Preventing the fertilized zygote from implantation is an early abortion.

Plan B One-Step is believed to act as an emergency contraceptive principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization (by altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova). In addition, it may inhibit implantation (by altering the endometrium). It is not effective once the process of implantation has begun.

The Cathechism states this in regards to fornification:

“2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.”

And about the gift of life it states this:

" 2378 A child is not something owed to one, but is a gift . The “supreme gift of marriage” is a human person. A child may not be considered a piece of property, an idea to which an alleged “right to a child” would lead. In this area, only the child possesses genuine rights: the right “to be the fruit of the specific act of the conjugal love of his parents,” and “the right to be respected as a person from the moment of his conception.”

Concerning contraception it states this:

"2370 Periodic continence, that is, the methods of birth regulation based on self-observation and the use of infertile periods, is in conformity with the objective criteria of morality. These methods respect the bodies of the spouses, encourage tenderness between them, and favor the education of an authentic freedom. In contrast, “every action which, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible” is intrinsically evil:

Thus the innate language that expresses the total reciprocal self-giving of husband and wife is overlaid, through contraception, by an objectively contradictory language, namely, that of not giving oneself totally to the other. This leads not only to a positive refusal to be open to life but also to a falsification of the inner truth of conjugal love, which is called upon to give itself in personal totality…. The difference, both anthropological and moral, between contraception and recourse to the rhythm of the cycle… involves in the final analysis two irreconcilable concepts of the human person and of human sexuality."

“1653 The fruitfulness of conjugal love extends to the fruits of the moral, spiritual, and supernatural life that parents hand on to their children by education. Parents are the principal and first educators of their children. In this sense the fundamental task of marriage and family is to be at the service of life.”

“1654 Spouses to whom God has not granted children can nevertheless have a conjugal life full of meaning, in both human and Christian terms. Their marriage can radiate a fruitfulness of charity, of hospitality, and of sacrifice.”

So basically no, as a guideline it´s more or less never okay to use contraception. In very few cases there might be pastoral reasons for using contraception (non-abortive ones) but those situations and exceptions are to be made by a priest only.
