Bishop Barron - The Mass - deeply disappointed

You know it’s funny about how tonight’s readings touched on how people would rather block or ignore good news. If they do then let them go then maybe one day they change their minds.

Not sure I get your point. Lights and glamour are of course not important. The earliest Christians could not even read or write. They learned their faith from some (often the case - probably) dry preacher attempting to convey the Gospel.

But–when trying to draw in the people of this world, and pull them from this world, we often have to compete these days with lights and glamour. I think Bishop Barron would agree with this. Which is why “Catholicism” and other productions contain “lights and glamour”.

But this was bait and switch. Big time!

Is there a way you can burn it onto a cd for them to listen as a podcast, maybe when they drive or are doing dishes or other daily tasks? Podcasts are becoming really popular these days; they might like that.

I think if you convert the audio into MP3 format on iTunes and burn it onto a cd that might work. (I’m not that techy so anyone feel free to correct me).

It’s okay to vent. But at least in my experience, people who come to the Church rarely do so because of a “road to Damascus” moment where something makes them go, “wow, I guess I should be Catholic. I’m now 100% on board.”

I mention that because I think the best way to evangelize your family is by example. Don’t worry so much about finding the perfect book or dvd or magazine article. Just be the best example you can be of the Christian life.

And that doesn’t mean be obnoxious about it, where every conversation is you beating them over the head about Catholicism. And it also means accepting that A) it might take awhile and B) it might never happen. If it doesn’t, love them and pray for them anyway.

i definitely agree with you

“bob” seemed to tend to the more “progressive” interpretation of theology

Is “bob” Bishop Barron? I wouldn’t say he’s particularly “progressive.” Seems on the more conservative side actually.

yes that is to whom i am referring

no flame war intended here

his heart is in the right place

Probably a topic for a new thread - but funny you should mention this. I was just yesterday talking to my wife about conversion(s). Of course we can watch The Journey Home and see some wonderful conversion stories.

However, as I pondered this situation, we thought about just how many people we know in real life experience who had a conversion experience. We could not get beyond -2- people.

The reality is (from my experience) that the vast majority of people (90%+) are wherever they may be in their Christianity, and will not change (any significant degree) to their last day.

Again, this is my experience.

BTW - I love much of what Bishop Barron has to offer. Not the point here. The point here is there is (in all likely hood without intention) a bait and switch which sucked all the air out of my balloon. If you watch it, I think it will be obvious. Not evil, not intended perhaps, but disappointing non-the-less. Again, my fault for putting too much emphasis on these things.

I was expecting to be wow’ed as I was in the prior segments. And this was my hopeful segment.

I don’t think I’d agree that people don’t change. They just typically don’t change on a dime. It’s often a slow process that takes years. Sometimes they don’t even realize they’re changing.

I think you’re confused. This series was only released a few weeks ago.

Im talking about what I remembered from other series… not this one.

There’s no point to it since he’s all over FB, Twitter & Instagram etc.

Chasing the 2 minutes crowd ⏳

I understand a bit how this happens in us. In my own hopes for my family’s conversion at times we get so excited that “THIS ONE” will be the way, the thing, the means, that will convert them. And then it doesn’t. But in the end, it is God who does the converting, eh? Hope does not disappoint 🙂 Hang in there!

Have you seen The Shack? Not seen the film but read the book. Might be worth a look to see if it’s appropriate for your family.

I am not sure The Shack is a good book to
recommend someone wanting to strengthen their Catholic faith.
