Bishop Brandt Blocks Expansion Efforts of Nuns who Supported Health Bill

What vow of obedience have they broken? I am not aware that nuns are required to vow to agree with everything that a bishop says. The nuns had a different view of the effect of the health care bill. Lots of professionals analyzed the bill, and some came to different conclusions as to how it would effect abortion.

Bishop Brandt is within his authority to deny them support in his diocese, but to do so over this issue seems odd, to say the least. Is this the time to erect barriers to vocations to the religious life? And why - because they disagree with him on a very technical legislative interpretation?

The bishop is the recognized authority of the Catholic Church for ALL Catholics in his dioceses. All Catholics have a responsibility of obedience to Church teaching as instructed by their bishop. Nuns in particular take vows of obedience (see link above).

This is one of the Church’s main problems today. Not only lay people but many religious (these sisters and Father Murphy of Notre Dame) feel free go their own way and still claim to be Catholic.

I’m sure that if the sisters in these particular congregations renounce their signing the document this bishop will be more than happy to promote them for religious vocations. His actions, to borrow a phrase Pope Benedict has said for other reasons, were for the “good of the Church.” This was something I’m sure he didn’t do lightly and without prayer, it was an action borne out of love and concern and to send a consistent and faithful message.

Keep in mind that the Bishop isn’t blocking **all **of the sisters’ (they aren’t nuns) expansion efforts. He is just declining to allow thier use of diocisan resources to do recruitment.

This congregation has acted in a way that was bound to lessen the trust the Bishop had in their committment to Church teaching. What did they expect?

From what I hear, these “sisters” got the promise of enough big bucks from Obama that they can start their own church and thumb their noses at the Bishops. Bribery works on some people every time. When I saw “Sister Carol” on EWTN, I could clearly understand where she was coming from in support of govt run healthcare. She has expenses, dontcha know! This is a very sad situation indeed. By accepting this govt money, they will be bound to provide abortions in their own medical facilities anyway.

Let’s not forget the giant “Thank You” from Planned Parenthood and Nancy Pelosi after the nuns endorsement. This convinces me abortion will be part of the bill in some form.

As far as the good Bishop blocking the vocation day, probably a waste of money anyway since they don’t have much to attract anybody who wants to be loyal to the church. It would be better for their order to die out.

It was an act of a bishop censoring a priest who was acting wrongly (calling everyone up to communion regardless of Church affiliation, blessing of same sex unions, and allowing his pastoral administrator (a woman) to wear a stole and elevate the chalice at Mass) that was the final nail in the coffin for me to fully enter the Catholic Church.

Now look at me, I am a consecrated religious in temporary vows working through formation for the priesthood.

If that bishop did not act I might not be where I am today.

I disagree that things like this in the public media are bad. It shows that our Church has a true hierarchy and that it is not a “pick and choose” religion as some seem to wish it to be.

No, this is simply a chastisement. The error was public, so justice demands that the chastisement be public as well.
