The superior general of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) said in an interview that there may be a split within the society if it reconciles with the Holy See."There are some …

If effect, he admits what I’ve said all along. He can’t guarantee the SSPX people will follow its bishops? The underlying philosophy that created and sustains the SSPX is that the magisterium can no longer be trusted and each person must therefore apply the teachings of Tradition and Scripture himself to the best of his ability. Oh, and you should maybe go find a bishop that agrees with you to make it feel catholic.

Still smells protestant from here.

The rank and file aren’t much bothered by what their “bishops” say. Their laity don’t trust the Church, and if there is any sort of reconciliation, it will mean to them that the Catholic Church finally came to its senses and rejoined the authentic church. 😦 😦

That’s too general a statement. I fully comprehend the hurt, frustration, bewilderment and anger the motivates people to go SSPX (I lived in Milwaukee during some of the Weakland years). Their rank and file are no more monolithic than are those in typical diocesan parishes.

My suggestion is to criticize the philosophical problems that underly their movement instead of the people themselves. The danger the IDEA of the SSPX poses is that self appointed groups can discern doctrinal truth better than the apostles and their successors. It’s no better of an idea just because you went and found a rogue bishop that agrees with your conclusions.

Nothing really new here IMO. Since the lifting of the excommunications some years ago, it was apparent that there was a big difference of sentiment among the bishops. The Vatican was certainly aware of it. Perhaps they’ll be a change of heart once the exact restructure is disclosed, perhaps not. Perhaps they’ll be no restructure plan at all.

I know a fair number of SSPX people and they greeted the notion of reconciliation very warmly, if perhaps prematurely. But they are all of one SSPX parish, and other groups might be very different.

But the SSPX people I know never did question the Pope’s authority over them. What they DID fear was being put under the authority of people like Weakland and Mahoney, and I find it very hard to blame them for that.

The ones I know think highly of Fellay. It does appear to me that Fellay really would reconcile with the Holy See if he could. I do appreciate his concern that some of the SSPX folks will jump ship. All he has to do is look at the SSPV to believe that.

The question is not of following it’s bishops’ but which bishops will particular priests follow?

If what I have been reading gives any indication +Fellay is leaning towards a reconcillation, but +Williamson is not.

I think a split, if one occurs, would happen at the episcopal level of the Society.

The schismatic crowd who belong to the SSPX church.
Technically, they are in an 'irregular canonical state". Cardinal Castrillón-Hoyos has stated on several occasions that the SSPX are not in a state of schism and the Vatican itself has never stated that they were.

Without a Vatican declaration of schism, it would be no more proper to claim that the SSPX is schismatic than it would for someone to declare that Nancy Pelosi is a heretic on the grounds that she believes the Catholic faith comples her to support gay marriage. Both require a formal Vatican declaration and not simply the statement by any of us.

(or in the case the SSPX we have a formal declaration from the Ecclesia Dei Commision that they are NOT in schism, which, I suppose, is more than we can say about Ms Pelosi and heresy 😉 😛 )
