The rank and file aren’t much bothered by what their “bishops” say. Their laity don’t trust the Church, and if there is any sort of reconciliation, it will mean to them that the Catholic Church finally came to its senses and rejoined the authentic church. If effect, he admits what I’ve said all along. He can’t guarantee the SSPX people will follow its bishops? The underlying philosophy that created and sustains the SSPX is that the magisterium can no longer be trusted and each person must therefore apply the teachings of Tradition and Scripture himself to the best of his ability. Oh, and you should maybe go find a bishop that agrees with you to make it feel catholic.
Still smells protestant from here.
Specifically, what group pf “laity” don’t trust the Church? The rank and file aren’t much bothered by what their “bishops” say. Thanks for clarifying. The schismatic crowd who belong to the SSPX church.
That’s too general a statement. I fully comprehend the hurt, frustration, bewilderment and anger the motivates people to go SSPX (I lived in Milwaukee during some of the Weakland years). Their rank and file are no more monolithic than are those in typical diocesan parishes. The rank and file aren’t much bothered by what their “bishops” say. I know a fair number of SSPX people and they greeted the notion of reconciliation very warmly, if perhaps prematurely. But they are all of one SSPX parish, and other groups might be very different. That’s too general a statement. My suggestion is to criticize the philosophical problems that underly their movement instead of the people themselves. The danger the IDEA of the SSPX poses is that self appointed groups can discern doctrinal truth better than the apostles and their successors. It’s no better of an idea just because you went and found a rogue bishop that agrees with your conclusions.
The question is not of following it’s bishops’ but which bishops will particular priests follow? If effect, he admits what I’ve said all along. He can’t guarantee the SSPX people will follow its bishops? .
Technically, they are in an 'irregular canonical state". Cardinal Castrillón-Hoyos has stated on several occasions that the SSPX are not in a state of schism and the Vatican itself has never stated that they were. The schismatic crowd who belong to the SSPX church.
