WIth Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen and JP2, our past centruy has been certainly blessed!

I am so glad we live in the era of video and audio, their words will live on till the end of time.

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

If I were not a Catholic, and were looking for the true Church in the world
today, I would look for the one Church which did not get along well with the
world. In other words, I would look for the Church, which the world hates. My
reason for doing this would be that if Christ is in any one of the churches
of the world today, He must still be hated, as He was when He was on earth in
the flesh. If you would find Christ today, then find the Church that does not
get along with the world. Look for the Church which is accused of being
behind the times, as Our Lord was accused of being ignorant and never having
learned. Look for the Church which men sneer at as socially inferior, as they
sneered at Our Lord because He came from Nazareth. Look for the Church which
is accused of having a devil, as Our Lord was accused of being possessed by
Beelzebub, the Prince of Devils. Look for the Church which, in seasons of
bigotry, men say must be destroyed in the name of God as men crucified Christ
and thought they had done a service to God. Look for the Church which the
world rejects because it claims to be infallible, as Pilate rejected Christ
because He called Himself the Truth. Look for the Church which amid the
confusions of conflicting opinions, its members love as they love Christ, and
respect its Voice as the very voice of its Founder, and the suspicion will
grow, that if the Church is unpopular with the spirit of the world, then it
is unworldly, and if it is unworldly, it is other-worldly. Since it is
other-worldly it is infinitely loved and infinitely hated as was Christ
Himself. But only that which is Divine can be infinitely hated and infinitely
loved. Therefore, the Church is Divine"

(from his introduction to Radio Replies).

(commentary)

Down through the centuries, the Roman Catholic Church has been the biggest
target of religious hatred, although some cults and other religions have also
been hated. But they have been hated more for their un-Christ-like qualities
than for their Christ-like ones. The Catholic Church is unique; it is hated
for following the counter-cultural Christ.

It is only this Counter-Cultural Christ that offers us life and salvation
(John 6:66-68). He speaks life in the midst of our culture of death. There is
no place for contraception, or its handmaiden, abortion, in the Kingdom of
God. The true Christ teaches that we must deny our very selves in order to
inherit this Kingdom, even in sexual matters. He teaches that re-marriage
after divorce is adultery. He exalts the status of women. But he deliberately
chooses not to appoint any woman to be an Apostle. This Christ teaches that
the Holy Eucharist, which is His very Body and Blood, plays a vital role in
our salvation. He also teaches that His Church speaks with God’s authority.
It is His Church, the Roman Catholic Church, that teaches all these hard
sayings which lead to eternal life.

Just a couple personal stories to share from my family:

My mom went to a Catholic high school in New England. One day in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s, Bishop (or Father) Sheen was visiting her school. She was in the cafeteria when he walked by, and she whispered to her friend remarking on his good looks. Bishop Sheen stopped, walked to her table, and whispered “Jesus loves you” into her ear.

Her only other comment is that he was very distracting during Mass because he would walk to and fro during his homily. (Er, were they called homilies in those days?)

Later on, when he was Bishop of Rochester, he confirmed my wife. She takes great pride in that.

****SIMPLY SHEEN: “Truth - Forgotten Ideal” ****

** Submission is one of the deepest needs of the human heart. After a century and a half of false liberalism, in which it was denied that anything is true, and that it makes no difference what you believe, the world reacted to totalitarianism. It grew tired of its freedom, just as children in progressive schools grow tired of their license to do whatever they please. Freedom fatigues those who want to shirk responsibility. Then it is they look for some false god into whose hands they can throw themselves, so they will never have to think or make decisions for themselves. Nazism, Fascism, and Communism came into being during the twentieth century, as a reaction against false liberalism.
Code:
Self-will always repudiates a truth which challenges it. However successful self-will may be, it is never satisfied; that is why the egotist is always critical. The "head that wears the crown is uneasy," not because he is tired of the crown, but because he is tired of himself. He has it within his power to do anything he pleases, and this living without boundaries and limitations becomes as dull and stagnant as a swamp. A river must be happier than a swamp because it has banks and boundaries; a swamp is a valley of liberty that lost its shores and became "liberal."

The only ones who are truly free from the bondage and the burden of self are those who hold to a truth. ***"The truth will make you free,"*** said Our Divine Lord (John 8: 32). Only the boxer who knows the truth about fighting is free to stay on his feet. Only the one who knows the truths of engineering is free to build to build a bridge that will stand. The lover of truth is under an eternal law of rectitude; as he submits to it, he enjoys peace. Truth is not something that we invent; if we do, it is a lie; rather truth is something we discover, like love. In that great book of C.S. Lewis called *Screwtape Letters*, there is a series of correspondence between an uncle devil in hell and a young nephew devil on earth. The young devil is trying to win souls over to himself by talking about the "Truth of Materialism." The old devil reprimands him saying that he must not talk about "truth"; that is the word that is used by our "enemy God." You might confuse minds; get them to inquire whether a thing is "liberal or reactionary," "right or left," "modern or behind the times." Evidently Screwtape, the old devil, has succeeded pretty well with politicians and others.

Truth does not challenge, but truth does develop. Two and two do not make four in the thirteenth century, and sixteen in the twentieth, but arithmetic does develop into geometry, and geometry into calculus. Nor is truth easy to discover, particularly when it affects our lives. There are two kinds of truth; speculative and practical. Speculative truth is the truth of knowing, such as comes to us from philosophy, mechanics, physics and chemistry. Practical truth, however, is concerned with doing and living, such as ethics and morals.

The first kind of truth is very easy to accept, e.g., London is the capital of England. The reason is because it does not in any way involve a change in our conduct. It makes no practical difference to our lives. But the truth of morality, such as purity, justice and prudence and charity are not so easy for acceptance, because they often demand a revolution in our behavior. That is why men are more willing to accept objections against a principle of morality than against a theory of science. Our Divine Lord referred to the difficulty of accepting practical truths when He said: ***"You will not come to Me because your lives are evil"*** (cf. John 5: 19-47). Truth is a narrow path; either side is an abyss. It is easy to fall either to the right or the left; it was easy to be an idealist in the nineteenth century, as it is easy to be a materialist in the twentieth century; but to avoid both abysses and walk that narrow path of truth is as thrilling as a romance. Truth is like the veins of metal in the earth; it is often very thin and runs not in a continuous layer. If we lose it once, we may have to dig for miles to find it again. Grains of truth are like grains of gold that prospectors find; they can be discovered after a long search; they must be sifted from error with great patience; they must be buried with sacrifice to erase the dross and washed in the streams of honesty. Notice how often today men in public life accuse one another of "lying." Why is it they never speak of truth? May it not be that they studied in the same school as Pilate and asked **"What is Truth?** (John 18: 38) and then turn their backs on it. IT takes a heap of virtuous living for any one of us to discover Truth. **

** An organ can produce a thunderous outburst of discordant sounds but it can also, when played properly, give forth the most soothing and peaceful melodies. So it is with human passions. They can be sued without regard to law or they can be governed to foster joy and affection.
Code:
A person may have the knowledge of music and yet not enjoy it, as Nietzche did before his madness as he thumped the keys of the piano with his elbows. So too we may have a knowledge of love and yet not show love to others.

One wonders if an apology for want of love is not the effect of sampling one person out of every ten thousand and then writing a history of their passions. Would it not tend to substitute statistical average for a noble emotion? Then, too, is it scientific? Suppose we decided to write a history of the United States, and took only one day of every ten thousand days. That would be writing one event every twenty-seven years.

What one sets out to find, one generally finds. Those who are critical by nature, almost always find faults in others. If we start with the assumption that most people are dishonest, are we not constantly bumping up against crooks? On the contrary, if we believe people to be kind and good-hearted, these are about the only kind of souls we ever meet. They who are afraid of accidents most generally have them; their first principle of always looking for the worst makes the worst appear. Sometimes it is possible to tell a person to hide something in a room, and later discover the hiding place by taking hold of his hand and following its instinctive motions. When one begins with the idea that infidelity is common and that one ought to search for it, it is very likely that one will instinctively go to those areas and persons where infidelity is common and avoid those other groups or people where infidelity is less likely to be manifested. Tramps coming to New York, even for the first time, land in the Bowery, not on Park Avenue. What we *believe* is to a great extent a determinant of where we will go, like an alcoholic to a bar, and a Christian to a church.

The mood of our century is critical, partly because of its own uneasy conscience. "Misery loves company," it is said but so also does evil. The good has but few publicists. Most newspaper editors love murders, graft and scandals, but how few ever headline virtue. And yet the world is so full of good people, heroic deeds, generous hearts. Take the most sublime acts of love that is possible in this world, namely dying as a martyr rather than deny the God of Love. Never in history have there been as many martyrs as there are today. The martyrdoms of the first 250 years of Christian history are trivial in comparison to the unnumbered heroes of the soul who have died for the faith today. This is loyalty! This is fidelity! And any civilizations that can produce martyrs on such a high level must necessarily produce them on a lower level even in the home. What heat is to the natural universe, that love is to the moral universe. It is love that needs sampling today, mostly because love does so little advertising of its own. Being humble by nature, like the violet, it is served by few propagandists. Cities report births as well as deaths; why then should not publicists be as interested in those who love as well as those who betray? It is part of the perversity of human nature to give more space to an ancient or a modern Benedict Arnold who betrayed his country than to ten thousand patriots who died for it. But the solemn fact remains that faithfulness, honor, control of errant impulses and love keep the world at peace. It would be well for us, in these days when men look for evil and find it, to look for good and diffuse it - in particular among the millions of cases of disinterested love where others are served, with no hope of ever receiving even an empty hand in grateful clasp.

Communism and the Conscience of the West | 1948 | Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen
“[Satan] will set up a counterchurch which will be the ape of the [Catholic] Church. . . . It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content.” --Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, 1948 The Antichrist will not be so called; otherwise he would have no followers. He will not wear red tights, nor vomit sulphur, nor carry a trident nor wave an arrowed tail as Mephistopheles in Faust. This masquerade has helped the Devil convince men that he does not exist. When no man recognizes, the more power he exercises…
