First, “non-negotiables” is not a theological term. Second, there represent only small percentages of important issues. Third, the Church clearly teaches that being aligned on even a major issue like abortion is no reason to ignore other important issues, like healthcare, immigration, etc. I do not think it would fly for me to use my fidelity to my wife as an excuse to treat her like dirt.

While this letter may address life issues, I fear that after the election conservative Catholics may be like that husband, proud of their support to end abortion, dissenting on many social issues.
Some issues are not like healthcare and immigration where people can disagree on how best to deal with the problems at hand and still be good Catholics. Abortion and gay marriage come to mind. Why do you assume that politically conservative Catholics who support ending abortion would oppose Church teaching on other issues? I think your analogy falls short.

This. 👍

Unfortunately we cant pull money out of the mouth of a Fishjstto pay our taxes like Jesus did
What the heck does this have to do with what I asked? I just want to know what the verse was. Lying about what Jesus said or did not say is pretty serious business.

What is an example of a proportionately moral good that could be a reason to vote for a candidate who openly supports abortion?

What is such a profoundly great “good” that it justifies supporting the most evil acts?

I don’t get it…

If that is the official explanation from a Franciscan perspective, I am, to say the least disappointed.
It’s “a” Franciscan perspective, but the “the” Franciscan perspective. The Franciscans at EWTN are very orthodox in the faith and would not say that it’s okay to vote for a candidate as extremely immoral as Obama.

Isnt it sad that the democrat Party has so embraced the culture of death that a letter affirming the eternal teachings of the Church is condemned as an endorsement of the republican Canidate?
That’s what I was thinking too.

No, it does not. Your reasoning here is the same many Democrats use. It is even written into the voter’s guide as a acceptable as long as one is not voting for a pro-abortion candidate for the purpose of supporting abortion. Prudential judgement cuts both ways.

And on topics like healthcare and immigration, while many options are acceptable, being callous of the poor and needy, even through government, is not an acceptable Catholic position.

Cafeteria Catholics come in both red and blue.

Argh, the dreaded Cafeteria Catholic!

Romney isn’t openly attacking the Catholic faith. The only disagreement there is that he and Ryan favor abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Romney’s healthcare plan is for Massachusetts only. Not likely folks in Illinois would be too interested.
I don’t think Ryan supports abortion in cases of rape and incest.

He told the rich man to sell off his possession to come and follow Him. Once the rich man walked away sad, He didn’t say “that’s injustice, and I’m going to make sure Rome taxes you and gives it to the poor”.

He also didn’t endorse big government or tell Caesar to redistribute wealth.

.
A double argument from silence? Are you kidding? He also never commented on nuclear proliferation. Or military intervention. Or health insurance…

He doesn’t. But just like us, he can justifiably support a candidate like Romney due to the extreme danger of the other choice according to the principle given to us by Pope John Paul II in his Gospel of Life encyclical.

Hey, I could just use Nazis.

Seriously, I have no respect for the Democratic Party. I think the Republican Party might still hold out hope, but not a lot. This is why our country is where it is morally today. If only one party would put true morality first there would be hope. Yet both kowtow to an electorate based on selfish need, not the needs of others. Thus, we have the bishops speaking out against the evils of one faction this month, and the polar faction the next month.

We need a moral party.

We’ll never have a perfect political party. But the Republicans don’t zealously promote abortion and other intrinsic evils the way Democrats do.

The GOP is our only viable alternative, imperfect or not.
I used to be a Democrat until I saw how incompatible it was with being a Catholic. I made the switch in the middle of the election between Bush and Kerry. I started out being for Kerry, but I ended up voting for Bush and have been voting Republican ever since. If Obama wins, God knows I did all I could to try to prevent it.

I’ve only perused this thread, and it seems to have gone off topic a while ago.

That bishop was wrong. That letter should not have been read at Mass. It should have been put into the bulletin, but Mass was not the place, and is never the place, for politics. The point is that if we’re preaching the Gospel right as a community, then it should be a no-brainer as to who gets the “Catholic vote.” So the emphasis should not suddenly switch to Obama (which is lazy) but should remain focused on the Gospels and Christ (which we should teach by word *and *example, which is hard). Mass is such an intimate place for prayer and communion. I would have walked out on Mass if I’d have heard that and gone to a parish in another dioscese.

I agree that the Mass is holy and intimate, but this a lot more than just your usual political situation. The Catholic Church in America has had to take out lawsuits because of Obama’s HHS mandate. This is unprecedented in the history of the USA. And if Obama gets reelected his HHS mandate could force the closures of Catholic hospitals, schools, and other Catholic charities. This would greatly impede the Church’s mission to help the poor. Democrat efforts have already resulted in the closure of Catholic Charities adoption services because they would not give children away to homosexual couples. And who knows what else Obama has planned for adding to this later? So, I don’t see how you can trivialize what’s at stake here.

I don’t see how you can suggest what I’ve said is trivial. It’s the tail wagging the dog. There are places and occasions where all of what you say can be discussed (like this Forum, for example) and Mass isn’t one of them. Mass is for God. Mass is not for Obama. Kronos has no place in Kairos. When we are at Mass we are out of the world. We are with God. How can you receive the Eucharist with thanksgiving in your heart if you’ve been wound up with anxiety about Obama *during *Mass (Lord, protect us from all axiety)? One hour in the week to be free. One hour to be with God alone. Just one. Obama can wait.

But is that a Catholic belief that a political candidate can never be mentioned in a homily or is that an American belief? Another thing is, it’s not like he does it every time. He only did it once. And this is something that was authorized by the bishop.

I don’t know, Catholic Centre parties and traditional Christian Democratic parties come pretty close. 😃
