Abortion is a non-negotiable moral evil. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

*"2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
Code:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.

God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes."*
This is why these things were read from the pulpit.

Here are the footnotes to the section on abortion from the CCC:

Notice how many of them are as old as the Church itself, coming from Scripture and the Didache and the Church Fathers. The Church has ALWAYS taught that abortion is a grave sin. This is not new. It cannot change. It’s not a matter of opinion.

I already prayed about it and voted for him in good conscience last Thursday. Thanks though for judging whatever consequences you believe it has to my soul and salvation and the amount of blood on my hands. On that note I am leaving this thread. But I think I will allow God to judge any blood on my hands and Him to know my heart. God bless you as you walk in faith and His peace be with you always.
👍

I can impossibly vote in my conscience for Romney, and my conscience dictates to vote for Obama. I have thoroughly informed my conscience according to the whole teaching of the USCCB and other sources (Cardinal Ratzinger, the current Pope) – instead of a highly selective reading of these sources like so many posters here --, and according to what I observe the discrepancies between the GOP doing vs. saying (certainly on the federal level), and according to what I perceive Obama to have acccomplished for this country and what he will continue to do (opinions on that may differ among people, but that is irrelevant for my decision of conscience). I am in complete peace with God about my decision. I would not be in peace with God if I would vote for Romney.

I respect the decision of conscience of those who vote for Romney, and I expect that in turn they will respect mine. In the end, it is God who judges us, and I am perfectly in peace with Him judging me, as others are in peace with God judging them on the issue.

Going back to the axiom that an error in the beginning is an error indeed, I see no hope in arguing the results of end errors. If a person selects their faith based on their politics, then nothing can be addressed without a correct understanding of God’s relationship to Man through the Church.

Likewise, one can not argue abortion with one who sees it as “choice”. It misses the core issue. Such a one would never agree that another person has a right to choice when it comes to raping them, or mugging them. The whole idea of free choice to commit extreme violence against another is ludicrous. I was listenting to Cardinal Arinze. He used the example of someone who wanted to choose to shoot everyone in the Senate or Congress. He thought they might have a different view of choice in that situation.

Thank God that the bishops have come forward in an effort to help their parishoners toward a properly formed conscience on this election. The bishops understand that it is impossible for a Catholic to vote for Obama based on his actions on issues opposed to the Catholic Church. I would hate to have to stand before the fierce judgment seat of Christ one day and explain why I supported a man who championed abortion like no other leader in the history of America (even outside the womb). I urge those Catholics who are at peace supporting this man, to read the letters of the bishops, re-think their positions, and pray, pray, pray.

“You cannot be a good Catholic and pro-choice.” - Words of my Archbishop at today’s Mass.
Amen to that. But the correct term is “pro-abortion” or “pro-death.”

Abortion has nothing to do with “choice” except for the fact that the baby who is being murdered does not have a choice in the matter.

Lord have mercy.
Our Priest said this very week that a large number of people who vote “in good conscience” are going to find out when they die that a) they were lying to everyone but God and will be held accountable or b) did not have a well-formed conscience to begin with.

If I told you thought molesting a dog was okay, in good conscience, would anyone believe me?

There is a Catholic concept called, “invincible ignorance” that I suppose would fit in with choice (b). But I do not know if it would apply in most situations because Mr Obama is very clear on his stance against the Catholic Church.

Hi my friend Tantum. Yes I’m aware of indirect abortion vs not allowing women after they pray over their difficult decisions, seek to hear deep within their consciences, and who consult their pastors or other spiritual leaders along with their drs and family, the legal secular right to choose direct abortion to protect their health or to save their own life. .
Sorry, we saw enough of that in the 20th Century.

People who, after consulting with their pastors and spiritual advisors, and after much deliberation choose to exercise their legal secular right to protect their Lebensraum.

The Catholic bishops preached against mass extermination of innocents then, and I’m glad to see them doing so now.

When conservative Republican Catholics question whether Democratic Catholics Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi are Catholics according to Catholic teaching.
I don’t question the nature of their “faith” (i.e., I would never call them “not Catholic”), I am perfectly capable of questioning their adherence to dogma when they act openly and brazenly against it.

Following is the full text of Bishop Jenky’s letter:

Dear Catholic Believers,

Since the foundation of the American Republic and the adoption of the Bill of Rights, I do not think there has ever been a time more threatening to our religious liberty than the present. Neither the president of the United States nor the current majority of the Federal Senate have been willing to even consider the Catholic community’s grave objections to those HHS mandates that would require all Catholic institutions, exempting only our church buildings, to fund abortion, sterilization, and artificial contraception. This assault upon our religious freedom is simply without precedent in the American political and legal system. Contrary to the guarantees embedded in the First Amendment, the HHS mandates attempt to now narrowly define and thereby drastically limit our traditional religious works. They grossly and intentionally intrude upon the deeply held moral convictions that have always guided our Catholic schools, hospitals, and other apostolic ministries.

Nearly two thousand years ago, after our Savior had been bound, beaten, scourged, mocked, and crowned with thorns, a pagan Roman Procurator displayed Jesus to a hostile crowd by sarcastically declaring: “Behold your King.” The mob roared back: “We have no king but Caesar.” Today, Catholic politicians, bureaucrats, and their electoral supporters who callously enable the destruction of innocent human life in the womb also thereby reject Jesus as their Lord. They are objectively guilty of grave sin. For those who hope for salvation, no political loyalty can ever take precedence over loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ and to his Gospel of Life. God is not mocked, and as the Bible clearly teaches, after this passing instant of life on earth, God’s great mercy in time will give way to God’s perfect judgment in eternity.

I therefore call upon every practicing Catholic in this Diocese to vote. Be faithful to Christ and to your Catholic Faith. May God guide and protect His Holy Church, and may God bless America.

Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, CSC
Catholic Bishop of Peoria

Whether or not the HHS mandate violates the religious freedom clause of the US Constitution will be adjudicated in the United States Supreme Court. The Bishops would very much like to avoid this, because there is every possibility that if it gets that far, they will loose. They would much rather have the mandate overturned legislatively - which is why SOME bishops are having letters like this read to their congregations.

Fortunately, Cardinal Sean O’Malley has not resorted to such tactics. This may be because there are some election issues that are MORE IMPORTANT than the HHS mandate. In Massachusetts, we are battling a referendum on the ballot that would legalize physician assisted suicide and I am very glad that Cardinal O’Malley is putting all his political capital and gravitas behind efforts to get Catholics to vote against it.

Anyone who knows anything about the history of the Catholic Church will understand that this battle over the HHS mandate is a relatively minor chapter in the great battles between Church and State that have been fought over the last two millennium. We have heard calls for Crusades in the past and they have always been couched in the language of salvation. Whether this has always been justified is debatable. I for one do not believe the Albigensian Crusade was justified.

No matter what happens with regard to the HHS mandate, the Church will figure out a way to continue its mission. It always had and always will, because the Holy Spirit is with us.

One of our nearby churches is offering Mass and Rosary every hour while the polls are open tomorrow. Other parishes are have exposition from 6:00 AM to 12:30 AM 11/6-11/7. Our parish has been praying a special Rosary for our country for the past month.

Our priest tells us faith is a verb. We are not to sit back and do nothing.

Excellent! Praying for our country, not for one man and against the other. Your parish is demonstrating charity as well as praying for the good of our nation, regardless who wins the election. I like it!

Fasting in addition to prayer will also be beneficial.

How are Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi acting brazenly against Church dogma? The idea that that embracing tyranny is the only way to end abortion is a lie. Yes, it is quick and effective, but it is also immoral. Joe Biden was quite clear at the Vice Presidential debate that this is how he understands the issue. I do not see who that is in any way “not Catholic”.

Yes in fact I had a volunteer at my door last week and when I told them that I was a practicing Catholic who recently went thru a major conversion and that I couldn’t vote against what the Church teaches and this nice, young volunteer told me well didn’t you watch the vice-presidential debate when Joe Biden said that he was a practicing, devout Catholic and my response was, nice try because do you think Joe Biden is being very devout or practicing what the church teaches? and he laughed and said no your right, he’s not.

The devil gets enjoyment in deception and he will not fool me again!

Faith first and that applies to politicians as well.Check out an examination of conscience on line or at your local parish. One of the issues that is listed is:Have I participated in or helped someone procure an abortion? Pelosiand Biden et all are complicit in an indirect way by supporting abortion.By the way I heard a Catholic dr speak out on this issue. His statement is the right to life is the most fundamental of our rights as humans. To take that right away through abortion, deprives that life of all other liberties.

Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are “True blue” Democrats, which has as part of its party platform the unmitigated, tax-payer-funded, access and provisioning of abortion on demand.
