By your reasoning: abortion will happen either way, so why make it an issue? And where is the mandate for making abortion a government matter at all? Can’t people choose to abort or not to abort the way they choose to help the poor or not help the poor? Not my argument, but if I read yours well, that’s what I come up with…

In reality, the government has an administrative role in BOTH.
The problem with your argument is that banning abortion, as we should, is not an “administrative role.”

Is preventing/limiting murder (via the justice system) not an administrative role?
Nope. It is a legislative/legal role. Administrative roles are roles where programs are being administered by a bureaucracy.

I don’t think I made myself clear. I wasn’t implying that the bishop should endorse ANYONE.

I, in good conscience, can NOT vote for either one, as they are both unacceptable. And Lisa, as for your smart-alec remark about a piddly complaint… were you referring to the lack of support of Nativities in the public square, or the gay marriage debacle? Because BOTH are serious assaults on religion, and lack of a backbone on those issues could be considered a sin of omission by some.

I personally despise the politics of both men, and I will use my right as an American to vote my conscience. To anyone who says that I am throwing my vote away on a third candidate who has no chance of winning; I say it is far better than throwing away my vote on one of these men who should never have been nominated in the first place. I refuse to be even slightly accountable for getting either one elected. Thanks for listening.
You can vote or not vote. That is your right. Your last statement is interesting…to say you don’t want to have even the slightest bit of accountability for getting either one elected, in fact by voting third party you are doing just that. But your action promotes Obama not Romney. So you cannot avoid being “slightly” accountable no matter what you do. It’s your choice…pro abortion/anti-church Obama…or the alternative. With your standards of perfection I wish you luck in finding an appropriate candidate.

As to the governor of a state interfering with individual towns’ holiday decorations…are you kidding? Do you think the role of the governor is to intervene in such minutia? Given the kind of issues most governors face, whether East Yapbip has a creche in their town square or not seems pretty low on the list.

It’s amazing those who squawk about big government intereference are the first to complain when their ox is being gored.

It is adminstrative as well as legal: the government does not just have the responsibility to make laws, but to build and maintain the structures/institutions via which those laws are enforced: that latter role is administrative.

Regulations are issued through administrative agencies to effectuate the law.

I’m mixed. I wouldn’t want my priest of bishop preaching on politics, but that’s not really what this was. This was stating what has happened in the last few years under Obama, and how it affects the Church. So, in review, I’m in favor of this.

Good job Bishop. It’s not our fault that Obama has completely rejected natural law, and we shouldn’t be ashamed of saying as much.
I don’t see anything wrong with homilies on politics. It is something that effects us all and we can all play a part in, so it seems to be neglecting their role not to preach on politics at least once and a while.

The democrat party stands in direct opposition to nearly everything the Catholic Church teaches. It boggles my mind how anyone can rationalize that being a Catholic and democrat is permissible.
It is akin to being a Nazi because you like the economic plan, while ignoring the fact that they murder Jews.

Has this bishop ordered his clergy to read out a letter on any or all of the following?

The widespread evil of human trafficking
the use of young girls for prostitution on a large scale?
the belief that the acquisition of wealth by any means is praiseworthy
the poor are to blame for their plight and must be punished
the sale of arms to belligerent forces which is causing immense human suffering
the belief of one Presidential candidate that God is a man from another planet and he is married
the deliberate obstruction of any attempt to introduce meaningful reforms
A systematic campaign of villfication and character assassination?

I think not
Abortion is a perverse evil, but is not the only evil. Most of the election hopefuls support abortion at some level. Whether an abortion takes place at 6 weeks,22 weeks or 26 weeks, it is equally immoral to support it, so why is one man being castigated for the views of many?
One would think that the bishops would spend more time examining their part in the child abuse scandal than interfering with people’ rights to vote freely

That - IMHO- is simply deflection.

Obama must go. Romney is by*** far*** the lesser of two evils. Romney is the only chance that exists for us to rid ourselves of the blood sacrifices of abortion at this juncture. Duh.

Simple really.

This makes no sense.

As you are in the UK I wonder at your sources. Of course bringing up the abuse scandal is relevant 🤷 Add a bit of anti-Mormon bigotry and you show your cards. Ah the real issue…

Where’s the anti-Mormon bigotry? The do believe that Jesus and Satan were or are brothers, that God is married, and has sexual relations, and that all men wil become gods in their own universes. That is not bigotry. I’m not knocking them - it is part of their doctrine! Among a lot of things that Catholics,IMO at least, ought not accept. 🤷

We are voting for a president, someone who will lead,Romney’s religion is of little consequence re this issue. Obama sat in a church for over 20 years, listening to an anti American pastor, didn’t seem to get in the way of him being elected.🤷

Romney and Obama’s religious beliefs are immaterial to me. What they will do, or have already done to my Catholic faith, is my sole concern. Obama has clearly proven his anti-Catholic intentions via the HHS mandate, gay marriage, refusal to defend DOMA. At this point, anything said or done by Romney is heads above Obama’s abysmal Catholic record.

Would you not think that a candidate’s religion could be a detriment to his or her election for some groups at least? E.g. Seventh Day Adventism, which openly declares its anti-Catholicism? But, that’s only my personal opinion.

Yes it is your opinion. Has Romney said or done anything in his past that would indicate his faith compromises his ability to run the country? Did he tell everyone in Massachusetts where to worship or what kind of underwear to buy? How did his Mormon faith impact his performance at Bain Capital or the Olympics?..didn’t think so.

All of this wild speculation and specious claims about the Mormon faith are little more than red herrings which at this stage smell pretty ripe. As a convert I was stunned by the anti Catholic bigotry that exists. Seeing Catholics who should be sensitive to this very issue express such negative views about those of another faith with ZERO reason to do so, just smacks of the worst hypocrisy.

Err. You didn’t answer my hypotheticals. IMO again, there are religious faiths that are sufficienty anti-Catholic to warrant a Catholic’s thinking twice before backing the candidate. As a staunch GOP partisan, you naturally assumed that I meant Romney, but it was SDA that I used as a possible example… 🤷

And you are making a moral equivalence between the two? On what issues is the right “callous to the poor and needy” ? Like I said, your analogy falls way short.
No I do not and did not make a moral equivalency between the two. No, I do not agree that this makes my analogy false because*** I*** do not equate cheating on one’s wife with mistreating her.
