SOUTH BEND — The University of Notre Dame’s decision to honor Vice President Joe Biden with the Laetare Medal is wrong, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend said, because of Biden’s stances on abortion and gay marriage.
“I believe it is wrong for Notre Dame to honor any ‘pro-choice’ public official with the Laetare Medal, even if he/she has other positive accomplishments in public service, since direct abortion is gravely contrary to the natural law and violates a very fundamental principle of Catholic moral and social teaching: the inalienable right to life of every innocent human being from the moment of conception,” Bishop Kevin Rhoades said in a written statement issued Monday.
“I also question the propriety of honoring a public official who was a major spokesman for the redefinition of marriage. The (Catholic) Church has continually urged public officials, especially Catholics, of the grave and clear obligation to oppose any law that supports or facilitates abortion or that undermines the authentic meaning of marriage. I disagree with awarding someone for ‘outstanding service to the Church and society’ who has not been faithful to this obligation.”

The Laetare Medal - is an annual award given by the University of Notre Dame in recognition of outstanding service to the Catholic Church and society. The award is given to an American Catholic or group of Catholics “whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity.”
First awarded in 1883, it is the oldest and most prestigious award for American Catholics.
From the above definition, I simply cannot see how Biden is awarded this medal. 🤷

Half of the faculty is non-Catholic. Why do they think it represents all- Catholic values?

Many American Democratic Catholic politicians are pro-choice.

I’m not at all surprised. It was Notre Dame, after all, that had Obama speak at their graduation in 2009 (being the first university that Obama gave a commencement speech after becoming POTUS). And if Notre Dame is willing to give Obama a platform… well, at least Biden is considered Catholic. 🤷

Kudos to the bishop!
Amen!

(You can’t believe how things like this turn many protestant Christians from coming into the Church…although I would try to help them see the “bigger picture” of the Church…still…this isn’t a strong witness and a scandal in my view ) My prayers for Biden and those with similar views contrary to the Holy Catholic Church.:highprayer: Lord have mercy and hear our prayers.

i am a graduate of notre dame. i am shocked and ashamed of notre dame honoring president obama & vice president biden; two absolute pro-abortion advocates

i root for the sports teams on tv; the administration of that school is dead to me

i don’t give them a dime and i haven’t set foot on the campus in many, many years

Im songlad the Bishop spoke out. The priests and religious from the university along with the faithful Catholics should stand strongly behind the Bishop.

the administration of notre dame univ ignores the bishop of fort wayne

There are many of us outside the Roman Catholic Church who see Joe Biden’s faith as something extremely positive. He talks openly about his Catholicism and how during times of personal crisis and grief, it gave him strength and comfort. Do you remember his interview with Stephen Colbert shortly after his son died? Two Catholics sharing what faith means. It was very moving.

I am very happy he is receiving this award; he is a strong symbol of your faith. Look at all the people who DO respect him and think of the positive ways he is representing you.

I know. I don’t think he matched one of the qualities and certainly not all of them. I also have seen zero in the way of service to the Catholic Church. He has done more to promote secularism than anything else.

Except he isn’t a positive representative of Catholicism. Perhaps he represents that fuzzy, don’t offend anyone type of Christianity, but he certainly doesn’t represent the faith.

Glad to hear it. Good on that bishop for standing up and being brave.

I am curious. Is the University under the authority of the local Bishop? Or would it be the Congregation of Holy Cross? What is the primary relationship in cases like this?

you are completely ignoring biden’s stance on the ultimate issue which is “life”

biden is open & notoriously pro-abortion up to and beyond the moment of birth
Biden has long made a point of telling Catholic voters that he is a devout and practicing Catholic, while also claiming that he cannot impose his personal beliefs on abortion on others.
That answer doesn’t fly with Catholic teaching. According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ statement on “Catholics in Political Life”:
It is the teaching of the Catholic Church from the very beginning, founded on her understanding of her Lord’s own witness to the sacredness of human life, that the killing of an unborn child is always intrinsically evil and can never be justified.
If those who perform an abortion and those who cooperate willingly in the action are fully aware of the objective evil of what they do, they are guilty of grave sin and thereby separate themselves from God’s grace. This is the constant and received teaching of the Church. It is, as well, the conviction of many other people of good will.
To make such intrinsically evil actions legal is itself wrong. This is the point most recently highlighted in official Catholic teaching. The legal system as such can be said to cooperate in evil when it fails to protect the lives of those who have no protection except the law. In the United States of America, abortion on demand has been made a constitutional right by a decision of the Supreme Court. Failing to protect the lives of innocent and defenseless members of the human race is to sin against justice. Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good.

btw, other than being ordered to attend state events that president obama cares not to show up at, what has vice president biden accomplished to merit any award? he is the sitting vice president behind a physically healthy president who will’ve completed his two terms w/ little or no assist from vp biden

other than collect a healthy salary and made numerous speech gaffes; what exactly has joe biden done to be worthy of any award other than perhaps the attendance and penmanship award??
