Bishop Vasa asks Catholics to affirm church teachings

The Santa Rosa Catholic Diocese is requiring its 200 schoolteachers to sign an agreement affirming that “modern errors” such as contraception, abortion, homosexual marriage and euthanasia are “matters that gravely offend human dignity.”
The move is an effort by Bishop Robert Vasa to delineate specifically what it means for a Catholic-school teacher – whether Catholic or not – to be a “model of Catholic living” and to adhere to Catholic teaching.
That means means abiding by the Ten Commandments, going to church every Sunday and heeding God’s words in thought, deed and intentions, according to a private church document that is an “addendum” to language in the current teachers’ contract

This is brilliant and perfect.

It “should” encourage the teachers who have fallen out of touch w/ the teachings of Catholicism and The Catholic Church, to truly examine themselves. I don’t know WHY looking inward at ourselves is something people can’t be bothered with anymore. Why all this cherry picking of something YOU have decided to be a part of? Self obsession is at an all time high, and is encouraged by so many out of touch human beings. Here is a fake 100$, and here is a real 100$ bill … which one do you want?

Of course, the teachers should be HONORED to sign.

Did Bishop Vasa actually refer to these as “modern errors”?!

They are all ancient errors.

Nevertheless, I’m glad that some Bishops take their role this seriously.

The blogger at Catholic Sensibility points out that the previous bishop of this diocese mishandled a priest-predator and failed to report him until he had fled the country. He suggests that the bishop should also sign an oath:

Brilliant. I firmly believe this is the right move for everyone teaching in a Catholic school anywhere.

Good for him. May the Lord give him the strength to persevere in what I am sure will be a struggle for the foreseeable future.
 
Bishop Vasa was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. Thank God for him in his diocese! He was ordained a priest by one of the former bishops of Lincoln (The late Bishop Flavin)

Can Jewish teachers be fired if they don’t attend church services on Sundays? If they can be fired, how is that not a violation of their freedom of religion? What about non-Catholic teachers whose religions don’t require them to attend church services at any time?
 
Asking Catholic school teachers to be Catholic role models seems reasonable.

At the same time, teachers simply don’t get enough (whether from a pay perspective or even simply respect) in order to warrant being under constant surveillance. So, I’m admittedly a little freaked out every time they spring new one-sided contracts on us.

Teacher’s catch hell for the craziest things these days. My local parish school now refuses to hire any teachers from within their town or any of the bordering towns. Generally speaking, the idea is that they don’t want you to come into contact with parents or students outside of school in your free time.

For example, I was out with my wife, one of my friends (a teacher) and his (then) girlfriend. A parent spotted him and contacted the administration. On Monday, he gets called in to the office and chewed out. They said that he should be setting a “better example.” The funny thing? He didn’t even touch a drink that night! He was just enjoying a meal with friends. He was stone cold sober the whole time. For teachers apparently, even being near alcohol is a crime. LOL.

It’s one thing to hold people to a standard, but sometimes when you’re a teacher, you’re life just isn’t your own at all. God forbid you should do anything that a single noisy parent disagrees with…
