Let’s try to imagine what our Lord will ask a Catholic bishop on their day of judgement.
I agree, it’s difficult to hide divorce. Which is exactly the reason it’s such a risk for scandal. And that, by extension, is exactly the reason care should be taken not to hire people who will divorce frivolously. So how do you know that the German director of kindergarten was fired precisely because she talked too much about her divorce? A divorce is something difficult to hide. People take off their wedding ring, one of the spouses takes their luggage and leave the house, the husband and wife aren’t seen together anymore, their children talk about it witht heir friends. These are things that can be noticed in any community, without the need of any loud comments from the involved persons.
In that case, it’s not gossip getting them fired, is it? It’s the actual thing they did which was the object of gossip. But no, it’s not impossible to lose your job because of gossip. A gossip can lead an authority to investigate. If the investigation confirms the gossip, the culprits are punished.
The bolded part is exactly what I meant when I asked if giving in to hostage takers results in more or fewer hostage situations. “Let them fornicate without consequence or the babies get it” is pretty much hostage-taking 101.Well there’s a stretch of an analogy. Unless you’re willing to only hire married women (which probably isn’t legal), you’re going to have some single women teaching. And many of them will be sexually active, no matter what you have them sign. Many single people are sexually active without intending to get pregnant, no matter how wise that is. They take the risk that they might get pregnant, and sometimes they end up that way. Your position forces her to pick between her kid and the job. A new child, but no job, no spouse, and (since the firing would be for cause) no unemployment benefits. For many women, that would mean “goodbye kid”.
If you think signing a piece of paper is going to change her behavior once she’s employed, you’re kidding yourself. Yes, you’ll have a few less single teachers choosing to work at Catholic schools, but you’ll have a few more dead babies too. No thanks.
And the “honest teachers out the door” thing is silly. The point is those honest teachers shouldn;t be teaching children Catholic values at a Catholic school. It would be a positive to see them leave in this case.I cannot follow this at all? How is it encouraging people to lie? If one has no integrity then this document will not make them less honest.
People in any profession can always lie on forms. They still often have you sign the documents in question, and often affirm their truthfullness. To attack the Bishop on the idea when overlooking the many other professions who do the same thing, for universally less serious matters, is cherry picking.Sure some people are going to lie on the document, but its a contract and upon breach of that contract they can lose their job. Good to see.

This whole exercise is a reminder of how important obedience is in the Church. Today, too often, we think we can pick and choose when to be obedient to our Bishops. He is well within his right to do this if he feels it is needed, and we are called to be obedient.
Yes, those against this document are either heterodox or placing incorrect emphasis on extraneous matters. And the “honest teachers out the door” thing is silly. pressdemocrat.com/article/20130315/COMMUNITY/130319711Bishop Robert Vasa has exempted nearly a dozen teachers at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic School in Ukiah from signing a controversial morality clause that he is requiring of about 200 educators employed by the Santa Rosa Catholic Diocese.
…
In a letter signed by the school principal, Mary Leittem-Thomas, and Rev. Alvin Villaruel, the local pastor, parents were informed that Vasa had made an exception for St. Mary’s teachers and they would not have to sign the clause, which is an addendum to the teachers’ contract for the 2013-2014 school year.
pressdemocrat.com/article/20130315/ARTICLES/130319645A group of Cardinal Newman High School parents is drafting a letter to Bishop Robert Vasa urging him to extend to the teachers of their children the same exemption from a morality clause that he granted to as many as 11 teachers in Ukiah.
That is a disturbing comment to hear from a teacher at a Catholic school and shows why such an edict is needed“Teachers shouldn’t be put in a position where they have to sign something that they may not believe in,” the teacher said.
