Great job Bishop Vasa. Wish all of our other Bishops would do the same.

Thank you for a fellow Cornhusker.
I’m proud that a son of the Lincoln Diocese is standing up for this. Bishop Vasa actually grew up about 20 minutes from where I live. Not only a great bishop but a great man.👍

Well there’s a stretch of an analogy. Unless you’re willing to only hire married women (which probably isn’t legal), you’re going to have some single women teaching. And many of them will be sexually active, no matter what you have them sign. Many single people are sexually active without intending to get pregnant, no matter how wise that is. They take the risk that they might get pregnant, and sometimes they end up that way. Your position forces her to pick between her kid and the job. A new child, but no job, no spouse, and (since the firing would be for cause) no unemployment benefits. For many women, that would mean “goodbye kid”.

If you think signing a piece of paper is going to change her behavior once she’s employed, you’re kidding yourself. Yes, you’ll have a few less single teachers choosing to work at Catholic schools, but you’ll have a few more dead babies too. No thanks.
Are you serious? Are you claiming that signing that one is loyal to the Church causes abortions?

So here is my question, lets say someone signs the agreement but breaks it. Will they be fired. For example if a teacher has an affair after they’ve signed the agreement. Will they be fired. Or is this only to take care of those who disagree with doctrine on things such as condoms?

Here is my question. Why would anyone who claims to be a Catholic not sign it? Would not a Catholic jump at a chance to publicly affirm their faith? It would be a badge of honor.

I agree. But if a Catholic breaks it are they fired. Lets say I sign it now at a Catholic school, but five years down the road I screw up and have an affair. Should I be fired? Please answer my question. I would sign a thing like this too. I just worry that someone might sign this, break a rule and then say "look I’m okay, I signed the form

I would imagine it depends on the circumstances. If the moral offense was public and scandalous then yes you could be fired. Why is that a problem? We are talking about children and their formation.

I’m saying that the threat of losing one’s job for getting pregnant can lead someone to have an abortion.

It is backwards thinking to allow the chance of the evil choice of abortion- a choice that may or may not be made- to prevent the Bishop from insuring that Catholic children, in Catholic schools, be taught by people upholding Catholic morals, in any area of their lives which might impact those same Catholic children.

I have to say that is exactly how I read it too.

I like how it starts with “well there’s a stretch of an analogy.”

Thats funny.

Plus, it’s a subtle form of moral blackmail.

Agreed. It puts Satan in the driver’s seat. I don’t think the Church (nor the schools, hospitals, adoption agencies, etc., connected to the Church) should ever hold back on issues of morals out of fear of what Satan might do. Satan will do what Satan will do. The Church doesn’t need to second-guess Satan- the Church just needs to hold to tenants of our faith.

Okay, well what if rumors spread around that Mr. So and so had an affair with another. Even if they teach 100% orthodoxy, are they still good role models for teaching our kids? Public or private I think its wrong. Same with people who promote abortion or euthanasia or women’s ordination or on the other spectrum, sedevecantist views or SSPX views. You have to agree 100% if you are catholic and teach in a catholic school.

You tell 'em. 🙂

(But it’s “tenets.” A common mistake! :))

If you have mainly morally sound employees then rumors will be few and far between. They might start but they definitely won’t spread. If you promote abortion or euthanasia you shouldn’t be sharing those views in a way that could lead to scandalize your kids.

As others stated earlier, having them sign something saying that they agree with the Church on everything doesn’t mean they actually do. It means that either they do, or they’re willing to sign the thing anyway. I’ll bet that most Catholic school teachers couldn’t honestly sign such a statement. You’re not ensuring anything. You’re just encouraging people to lie, and kicking some honest teachers out the door.

I cannot follow this at all? How is it encouraging people to lie? If one has no integrity then this document will not make them less honest.

Have to agree wholeheartedly.👍 I don’t know how this thread can get this much action. It should be pretty cut and dry with we Catholics on this issue.🤷

But even morally sound schools and places have issues like this. My catholic school had this, and that teacher is still employed. If I was the super, i’d kicked him to the curb. Its a well known fact he’s not faithful, but no one does anything about it. I know its their business, but if its public knowledge, even if rumor has exaggerated the situation, then that teacher should be gone. Mind you he is someone many would call “morally sound” otherwise. Sorry to break it to ya, but even pro life orthodox catholics can have moral issues.

That being said, its good Vasa is trying to keep his teachers in the diocese orthodox
