Maybe they could then pronounce that Baptized and Confirmed Catholics who for instance vote for Democrats such as Obama are not to be identified as Catholics. Of course that would require a change in teaching to say that their Baptisms no longer are permanent, indelible marks and do not make them members of the Catholic Church.
There you go again CMatt. Nobody here or anywhere has suggested that Baptism does not leave an indelible mark, and that those baptized Catholic are Catholic. You keep bringing this up, but for what reason? If nobody is making this argument, why do you keep referring to it?

I just joined the Catholic Defense League because of this. Obama and his crony, enabling “Catholics” are causing immense amount of damage to society and human life specifically.

The bishops are far to slow in their reactions. After the fact? After they supported Obamacare? Really? When 98% of Catholics use artificial contreception, 60% don’t believe in the Eucharist as the Church teaches it, and most don’t attend weekly Mass, where have you been bishops? Hiding under a rock because you are to afraid of offending people? Too afraid to ban a Catholic politician from receiving the Eucharist because they support abortion?

This is what happens when bishops are afraid to speak the truth because they might offend others. Expect more of this.

Someone said, “Maybe the Catholic Church needs a good persecution for it to wake up.”

The persecution has already started. Hopefully the Church wakes up.

Cognitive dissonance.

Where are all of the Obama supporting Catholics on this issue? They’re strangely quiet.

Catholic Pro-Life Group Launches Campaign Against Mandate
Catholic Advocate, a leading grassroots pro-life organization for Catholics, today launched a nationwide campaign providing resources for pro-life advocates wanting to speak out against the mandate the Obama administration has put place forcing religious groups to cover birth control and drugs that can cause abortions.
Catholic Advocate opposes the recently announced Department of Health and Human Services final rule affecting conscience protections in health care coverage and says the ruling forces organizations providing health plans to cover contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization regardless of their religious beliefs.
“One of the options to address this attack on people of faith is to directly contact our elected officials in Congress to let them know our dissatisfaction with this decision,” said Catholic Advocate President Matt Smith. “Our goal is to have at least 100,000 faithful Catholics participate each month until Congress acts.”
On the day of the HHS announcement, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) called the laity to this action when he said, “Let your elected leaders know that you want religious liberty and rights of conscience restored and that you want the administration’s contraceptive mandate rescinded.”
Catholic Advocate is asking for at least one leader per parish in this country to sign up at www.ProtectOurConscience.org. There they will have access to a grassroots toolbox to answer the call to rally faithful laity to reinstate our conscience rights.
“There are 17,782 parishes in the United States,” added Smith. “If faithful Catholics were able to average 115 letters per parish to their Representative and each Senator, Capitol Hill would receive over six million contacts on this issue. We would send a powerful message that cannot be ignored.”
A primary focus of this nationwide grassroots campaign is building additional support for H.R. 1179/S. 1467 — the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act introduced by Representative Jeff Fortenberry (Nebraska) and Senator Roy Blunt (Missouri).
The legislation amends the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) “to permit a health plan to decline coverage of specific items and services that are contrary to the religious beliefs of the sponsor, issuer, or other entity offering the plan or the purchaser or beneficiary (in the case of individual coverage) without penalty.” It also applies similar guidance to state health insurance exchange programs and becomes retroactive to when PPACA was signed into law by President Obama.
“The Obama Administration will force religious institutions to provide and pay for various forms of contraception,” says Smith. “They tried to offer a fig leaf to faith-based organizations by saying they have one year to comply, but make no mistake … the decision by the Obama administration is just a stay of execution. People of faith must unite against this administration’s constant assault on our freedom and beliefs.”
“President Obama said that he wanted to find “common ground” with people of faith. But allowing this decision to move forward sends a strong signal to people of faith; that door is closed. The Obama administration and its allies are attacking our values and our freedoms. They are committed to their agenda. The question is: Will we let them succeed?” Smith asked. “Will you join us in rallying behind the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act authored by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry? We must send a message to those who attack the core of our founding principles.”
“The only way we can be victorious over this anti-freedom, anti-religious agenda is to join together in one voice by standing up for our beliefs,” he concluded.

AMEN!

There is a time to stand and a time to retreat, this is not the time for retreat!

This administration, with support from prominent Catholics, are
determined to winnow the population of burdensome lives. Many
ProtestantChristians and Catholic christiansa ctually support the
right of a woman to choose abortion, and the terminally ill to choose
assisted suicide. This is very discouraging to see so many take
communion when they blatantly defy the church teachings, or are
completely ignorant of them. How do we help our brothers and
sisters who are so misled that they think it is we who are wrong
regarding contraception, fornication, homosexual practice, abortion,
and euthanasia. These are the big 5 that western society used to
universally agree were sinful and harmful. Now if we voice
disapproval of any of these actions we are considered intolerant
self righteous haters.Read Romans 1 verses 18 to 32. God is not
pleased with our behavior as a society. Be prepared to speak up,
But alsobe prepared to lose friendships.

HOW DO WE APPROACH THIS SOCIETY?
One person at a time, expecting rejection even though we speak
The truth in love.

Well, Matt, how do you square faith based hospitals closing rather than violate their conscience? I’m sure that will do a great deal to helping the poor and underserved.

Thank you for this wonderful president you’ve given us.
I square it by giving them a choice on whether they want to close or remain open and care for the sick.

This whole mess confuses me. Why would Catholic leaders believe Obama (or the Democrat leadership) is sensitive to conscience? This is a man who went to the floor in the Illinois senate to publicly argue for partial-birth abortion. Pres. Obama stated early in his admin. something along the lines that “USA is not a Christia nation”. There are several ways to interpret this but it should not have been ignored. Has he ever defended basic Judeo-Christian principles? The Democrats have compromised on many issues but never on abortion or abortion-related issues.

Be shrewd as serpents & simple as doves comes to mind.

Obama vs. Religious Liberty: 5 Notable Updates
by Thomas Peters
25 mins ago RSS
  1. My list of bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate now stands at 111. So over half of the U.S. bishops who head dioceses have spoken out.
  1. Senator Marco Rubio today introduced a bill (“the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2012″) to repeal the Obama/HHS mandate. This is significant because the Democrat-controlled Senate will be the hardest obstacle to overcome on the way to getting legislation to President Obama’s desk to overturn this onerous law.
  1. Pat Buchanan predicts that Catholics can win this fight if they play for keeps:
Not only should the bishops file suit in federal court against the president and Sebelius for violation of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, they should inform the White House that no bishop will give an invocation at the Democratic Convention.
Then, they should inform the White House that in the last two weeks of the 2012 campaign, priests in every parish will read from the pulpit at Sunday mass a letter denouncing Obama as anti-Catholic for denying the Church its right to live according to its beliefs.
If Obama loses the Catholic vote, he loses the election.
The White House will come around, fast. Rely upon it.
  1. Brian Montopoli of CBSNews’ Political Hotsheet blog has to win the prize for most anti-Catholic biased headline: “Catholics hear anti-Obama letter in church” — are you kidding me? GetReligion has good coverage of the Media ignoring the controversy.
  1. As far as gauging Catholics-in-the-pews reaction to these statements from the bishop I have been monitoring, Catholics in Green Bay gave their bishop a standing ovation after he read his statement after Mass (I’m no fan for applause during Mass, but if you’re going to applaud anything after Mass, this is a good choice):
I’m not much for applause during Mass either, but I am more than willing to overlook it this time. 😉 I can’t help but wonder where the rest of the bishops are at on this.

Peace,

I believe this is an example of twisting the Gospel. Christ’s injunctions are NOT aimed at the US governement or any government. They are aimed at indicviduals. Individuals need to help the needy not only because it is just but also because in doing so they open themselves to Christ’s love in the act of selflessly giving to another.
Exactly. But the key is you “believe” it is twisting the Gospel. Of course the Gospel is not aimed at the US govt. But individuals make up society. And I believe when individuals and faith based groups fall short, government can play a role to help. I don’t believe Jesus would turn down any help He could get. But we simply believe differently.

Laws are imperfect but a democratic society of plural beliefs made up individuals, attempts to come up with a law for its land.

Peace and God bless you.

I square it by giving them a choice on whether they want to close or remain open and care for the sick.
So, bottom line, then, if the Church doesn’t feel itself able to go along with what a ruler wants, it needs to shut its activites down. Is that really what you’re saying?

What he’s saying is that the state will now force the Church to choose between two evils.

Have fun with that!
