I’m betting that Catholic leftist front groups for Obama such as “Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good,” will either keep very quiet, or find a way to come out against the Church and in favor of this unconstitutional mandate.

Folks, you all just wait and see.

If this gets strong enough legs, Obama will “relent” with some kind of improvisation designed to fool Catholics who want to be fooled. “Oh, goodness me, what WAS that Kathleen thinking. Why, of course you’ll get an exemption. You can’t expect me to be an expert in Catholic theology, after all.” Some such lame thing.

I can assure you he has polling companies and focus groups working on it right now, and he’s counting Catholic noses in those efforts. If it looks bad for him, then he’ll work on some new way to fool everybody, and he’ll employ his “fellow traveling Catholics” to do it. We’ll see them even in here.

Or, his focus groups and polling will tell him he can safely attack the Church on this right now, and he’ll go all righteous about 'separation of church and state", and he’ll try to turn women against the Church, and the slavish media will repeatedly ask “Do you want this man (Dolan) in your bedroom?”, or something of the sort; a twofer for him.

It will be one or the other. Wait and see. His people are unquestionably working on it right now. But either way, he will be relentless in his attacks on the Church if he’s re-elected.

I hope they stick to their guns.

Drugs that may cause abortions? Is that wording for the actual plan B pill?

Glenn Beck and Bill Donahue (president of the Catholic League) discuss the Obama admin vs Catholic Church contraception debate

Part 1: youtube.com/watch?v=J-nklrMgUKM

Part 2: youtube.com/watch?v=u3vm3LhhBms

Bill Donahue said that during his 20 years at the Catholic League he has never seen this resolve among Catholics called liberal and conservative Catholics on this.
Thanks for that. I’m usually not much for Glen Beck but I find myself in agreement with him on this one. The comments about A) President Obama’s religious adviser wanting to see all religion gone; and B) the promises that President Obama made about protecting our rights during his talk at Notre Dame were especially pertinent.

Agreed. They are all over it at the National Catholic Distorter…

A couple of days ago, one of my relatives said she would vote for Obama even though his economic policies are a disaster … BECAUSE she is such a big supporter of “a woman’s right to choose”.

That’s how strong the “abortion lobby” is.
It’s ok for them to be one-issue voters, but not for us?

IMHO Pro - Obama Catholics is something of an oxymoron like ‘Jumbo Shrimp.’ I personally fail to see just *how *one can indeed vote for the Obama admin. and maintain the integrity of one’s Catholic Faith. The likes of Kathleen Sebelius never ceases to amaze me…

That aside. Methinks the real Catholics IMHO are failing to pray the daily Rosary-elst would we even be in this pickle?

There are huge numbers of people who will be one issue voters: the issue is–they will vote for Obama no matter what. No matter that he promotes abortion, no matter that he attacks the Church, no matter that he attacks marriage, no matter that default on the national debt looms. No matter that the economy sinks. No matter that the poor will suffer most. They will be fixed on one issue alone: re-elect Obama.

Nothing else will matter. Not bad policy, not irreligion, not forcing Catholics to violate their conscience. Not national disaster.

And they may succeed. And then we will have need of a modern day Thomas More. We’ll need great numbers of Thomas More’s.

I posted about this link on facebook and a friend of mine shared it on her’s. She is an Assembly of God Christian which obviously means we do not agree on much in term of theology. However, she is certainly on the correct side of right to life issues and she is very devout in her religion and has been since we were kids. Unfortunately, one of our old High School “friends” decided to respond and attack her. I am quoting it here so that all can get a feel for what we are fighting against and the level of animosity and hate that we are setting ourselves up for.

Here is what the person wrote on her facebook page:
I’m going to tell you a story and you’re not going to like it. I’ve looked at this in the face and made the hard decision and this conscience protection is %$#^%#^. I’m offended by ideologues sticking their noses in everyone else’s business. My son presented in the birth canal occipital posterior. He was stuck on my wife’s pelvic bone and became jammed. The doctor looked at me and said “I’m going to crush his skull. We need to perform an emergency C-section.” On our way into the O.R. the doctor turned to me and asked " If it comes down to it, save Valerie or the ba…" I interrupted him and said “Valerie.” Without hesitation, second guessing, remorse, or regret I told him to save my wife. If he or any other healthcare professional tried to invoke some #$%#$^ conscience right and made that decision for me and saved the baby over my wife, then again, without hesitation, second guessing, remorse, or regret I would have beaten that healthcare professional to death with a baseball bat. Obama is not taking away your rights, he is protecting mine!!!
And here was my response to him:
This is not about forcing you to do anything, and its not about getting into your business. It is about not forcing me, and you staying out of mine. This bill has absolutely nothing to do with overturning abortion or taking away your ability to use birth control. It is simply protecting my right to not do so if I choose. If you doubt this, read the bill. Simple as that. Considering your beliefs, I doubt very much you would have been at a Catholic hospital or had your insurance through an employer who would not want to provide payment for these services. As such, you would have absolutely nothing to worry about.
We are in for a long hard fight everyone and these types of people are what we are up against. It isn’t going to be easy…

Peace,

Didn’t the Bishops support Obama Care when it came out? Be careful what you ask for 'cause you just might get it.

I hope they stick to their guns…
So do I, but the last thing I heard on this is that the administration is very adamant about pushing this requirement. If there was a case that addresses the right to religious freedom this has got to be it!

Its time for the USCCB to officially endorse the Republican candidate.
Based on what many on CAF express, I agree. But why have them stop there? Maybe they could then pronounce that Baptized and Confirmed Catholics who for instance vote for Democrats such as Obama are not to be identified as Catholics. Of course that would require a change in teaching to say that their Baptisms no longer are permanent, indelible marks and do not make them members of the Catholic Church. But if they endorse because they believe the truth is the Republican is the true Catholic Christian candidate, does that mean the Church loses tax exempt status? Even so, if it’s the truth, I wouldn’t think they’d let taxes stand in the way.

Not exactly, and certainly not with the aspect of abortion/contraception as this thread pertains to it, and while a few rogue Bishops may have done so, as I understand the historical belief on the issue held by the USCCB, certainly not officially and as the bill truly is in its “passed” stage.

Why is 100% of the population covered with health insurance the goal?
For some Christians maybe because Christ said in Matt 25 to care for the ill (NAB, GNT). He didn’t say to assure care is only in reach for some specified lower percentage of the population. And if care is to be provided, someone has to pay for it. A woman who can’t afford care on her own, might want it to protect her health and save her life.

Last weekend, many thousands of Catholics heard the below letter read, or variations thereof, across the United States. I live in the Diocese of San Bernardino/Riverside and I didn’t hear a similar message in my parish this weekend. Did any Bishop in California stand up for religious freedom?

*Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people — the Catholic population — and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting www.usccb.org/conscience,to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Obama Administration’s decision.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+Alexander K. Sample

L.A.'s Archbishop Gomez, through the archdiocesan paper The Tidings, and Cardinal Mahony, through his blog, both decried the new HHS policy as a violation of Catholic conscience. That said, it was not mentioned during the homily or in the bulletin at my parish (yet).

In my diocese paper I read that there are religious exemptions. The only problem is that some Catholic universities/ other places that cater to a sizable portion of non-catholics must provide contraceptive services with their health care. I fail to see a problem. If these institutions believe in respecting the beliefs of people of different faiths enough to allow them participate and attend school (in the case of the university) then they should provide these health care services to them. The religious institutions are in the wrong here and need to comply with this law, which is completely Constitutional.
Here’s a strange idea, which doesn’t pass muster in the land of La La. If someone does not like the health plan offered by a religious instituion maybe they could work somewhere else? How about that for a wild and crazy idea?
