Not literally, but figuratively–figuring out exactly what you need to live independently and then methodically providing yourself with those skills and resources–a job, a savings account, a car (or bike), independent living skills, etc. At that point, once you have everything you need to live independently, you might not even need to do it–you might just need to know that you are free and you can leave any time you want.

Oh, yes–or watching R-rated movies, or using bad language, or whatever. A 3-year gap is very substantial at that age. I have an 11-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, and I’m very vigilant about making sure that she isn’t annoying or exploiting her younger brother (making him play a game he doesn’t want to play, nagging him into an unfair financial arrangement). I require that all financial transactions go through me to avoid him being pressured into a bad deal that he doesn’t want.

Gah.
