In my mind, if marriage is to be redefined, why stop there? Why is it wrong to marry someone related to you? Once God (or at least Natural Law) is tossed out, there is no reason to prohibit incestuous marriages.
With all due respect we have ‘tossed out’ thousands of gods over the years.

Surely your legal system prevents incestuous marriages? Why is there a requirement for a God to do this?

More people ‘live’ without the Catholic God than live with him. There is no reason why one can’t live a moral a law-abiding live without the need for a specific God.

What puts them under any obligation to answer that?
I’m challenging their position from a standpoint of logic. If they cannot define their terms well, then the discussion can suddenly go really bad with logical fallacy after logical fallacy.

Wrong. There is no life apart from God. God is the source of our Being. Even in rebellion, one is still within his Being. Until hell, of course, the state of being which is not-God.

Well I admire your sale technique. “Wrong!!”

Of course there is life apart from God. I understand that as a Catholic religionist you have an enthusiasm for your religion, but there are many other religions who make/made similar claims. You will have to do a little better, if you are hoping for converts.

God is the source of all life. Without him, there is no life, no being. Period. God the Father said it. Christ said it.

I am no great philosopher. “Wrong” works just fine for me when I’m wrong.

It sounds like you really believe it. Good luck with it 🙂

Thank you, aprilfloyd! If you ever are so inclined and in a right state of mind, please pray for me. I really need it. Help me defeat my pride.

aprilfloyd, you say our legal system protects against incestuous marriage. It is true for the time-being. Our legal system at one time protected babies with-in the womb. Our legal system also protected against marriages of people who don’t fit together in a biological way.

Is there a lot of people in your country, pushing for incestuous marriage? Do you think it will become law ?

Not that I know of, yet. Didn’t hear much about SSM 5 years ago, either. Who knows what other groups will push for legal changes to allow whatever it is they like to do?

Surely equal rights for homosexuals has been around for as long as homosexuals.

I have yet to hear anyone who argues for same-sex marriage actually answer the question “Then, why not incestuous marriage?”

All I ever hear in response is “Oh, that’s just silly. That won’t happen.”

Why? Why, why, why? Can you actually offer a reason as to why a father shouldn’t be able to marry his own daughter? It can’t possibly be evolutionary or scientific, because you’re not at all worried about two gay folks not being able to breed together.

👍👍👍

A practice I disagree with as I feel children should not be exposed to religion until they are at least 18 and can make a choice for themselves about whether to follow a religion.
I feel that kids should not be exposed to atheism, or pornography, or homosexuality, or hate, or some issues regarding sexuality and promiscuity, or LGBT stuff, etc, etc before they are 18, but your liberal media and left wing ‘if it feels good, do it’ crowd is doing their best to make damn sure my kids are bombarded with it as early as possible…

Gee, I wonder which causes more damage to society…

Sure:
  1. It has a much higher likelihood of resulting in birth defects, should the girl conceive.
  2. It is very unlikely that genuine consent could ever be achieved in such a relationship, as there is a clear power disparity between, say, father and daughter. Incidentally, that’s one of the reasons that teacher/student relationships are usually banned.

However, the supporters of incestuous marriage would point out at least three things.
  1. It’s historical and is part of certain cultures.
  2. They can consent to it.
  3. It’s love anyway.
Before anyone asks, I do not support incest.

I see/hear a lot of people say, “Just because they’re pushing for SSM now doesn’t mean they’ll be pushing for xxxxx in the future.” Earlier this week there was a report that Norway is moving closer to multiple partner “marriage.”

As for how beneficial it would be to children to be raised by two loving, committed homosexuals, there was a story a couple months ago about the “open” secret among homosexuals. The gist of the report was that most “monogamous” homosexual relationships aren’t monogamous at all, but are completely and freely open. How beneficial will it be to a child to never know who’s going to walk out of his dads’ bedroom in the morning? How beneficial will it be when things go wrong with one of these other partners? How stable a home is it when the parents’ bedroom is fitted with a revolving door?

Another article in the last couple months took aim at the studies that have come out in recent years showing how homosexual couples actually provide a much more stable environment for children when compared with heterosexual, married couples. The article showed that these studies all used a limited group of affluent, long-term homosexual couples from one small area of San Francisco. Hardly a representative sample. It didn’t mention the group used to get the results for the married families, but I have a hard time believing that the selection for that group wasn’t as equally skewed.

As far as the notion that widespread SSM and adoption by homosexual couples won’t lead to more abuse, ignoring all the anecdotal evidence from friends who worked with abused children from homosexual relationships, I look at how the abuse rate among priests plummeted after the Church worked to remove homosexuals from the seminaries and active ministry and I have a hard time believing the claims that there won’t be an increase in abuse if there’s an increase in adoption by SSM couples.

This little example is going to come across as horribly Hicksville but bear with me.

In Ontario Canada where I live we have this problem where Corinne’s come here buy up farm land then wait for prices to go up so they can rake in a profit for little to no effort. All the while the land sits for years growing over.
Also we have people from the city buying up farm land to have a ‘hobby’ farm where they dabble in farming but mainly use it as a summer house or just a change of pace.

This cause huge problems for the average farmer because she they need or want to expand they can’t. Land prices are two high but the food prices keep going up because the farm land 20 years ago that was contributing to our economy no longer is.

Now I’m not trying to say that LBGT is ruining the economy (lest not as directly) but the relationships are in spirit the same as those land owners. They come in for e us to accept that they want to waste their God given resources because they are ‘free’ to do so.

I’m frankly free not to work but I’m sure my fiancée would forget about me if I became a lazy bum.

The entire purpose of a marriage is to love support each other and train the next generation to replace our own. If you can’t have children and you know you cans you have to go to the bishop and as for an exception.

Why? Because its wasted resourses.

Yes they can adopt but that doesn’t increase the population that just moves it. It doesn’t increase genetic diversity.

And before you stand banging on about normal couples who adopt or can’t have children or both remember those are the exception and not the norm. There is lis the great problem with gay marriage. They want it to be a norm so I ask you at what point do you put your foot down and say the human race can not viably sustain itself and restrict gay marriage or do you think it’s just going to magically work out cause us humans have a great track record of stewardship without a road map.

There’s your scientific reason for you.

I absolutely agree with this. But, in reality, I don’t think it’s the next big push.

Actually, one thing I have seen in and around the more secular forums is the understanding of polygamy.

The vast majority would say…“I wouldn’t do it…but who am I to say someone else can’t?”

I don’t think we’ll see a push for incestuous marriage or pedophilia any time soon…but that isn’t to say it’s not a slippery slope.

Polygamy will become the new “homosexual agenda” once gay marriage is legalized.

According to these same arguments…there is nothing wrong with it? Many psychiatrists have been preaching that we aren’t designed, as humans, to be monogamous. Animals aren’t monogamous…and so on and so on…
