Sixteen billion isn’t a whole lot. Obama gave Iran ten times that much.

But again, while it might be a gift in some way, it might simply be a “safety net” combined with a few other programs somebody in congress wanted, like research or educational programs.

Nobody on here has yet told us what the bill really does, and perhaps nobody will. But I’m guessing it’s like most farm aid; some kind of catastrophic condition thing.
Sixteen billion is a lot. Especially given the tax cuts resulting in huge deficits during a good economy. I guess we don’t care about deficits if a Republican is in charge. Of course, it is a fallacy to say that Obama gave Iran money since it was, of course, Iran’s money in the first place. But I agree, if Obama knew that Trump was going to butcher diplomacy, there was no sense in allowing Iran to have that money back.

It wasn’t “Iran’s money”. It was taxpayer money that went to Iran. That’s another subject dealt with elsewhere.

Sixteen billion is a lot for you and me; not for government. But the real question is how much will actually go out? If it’s a “floor” for prices, possibly none of it will be spent. But probably there are other things in it as well.

Yeah, it was Iran’s money. A funky accounting notwithstanding.

Well, it’s the attitude that $16 billion isn’t a lot that explains why we have such a massive deficit during a good economy. So much for that fiscal conservativism, my voters need a payout.

No, the courts had already ruled against Iran. That money was being legally withheld to cover their liabilities.

It’s still the money that ended up funding terrorism and war, proxy wars.

Then why was it not distributed to satisfy those liabilities?
I don’t know, such cases with appeals can run forever. But the money was legally with held.

Maybe the plan was always to use it as leverage, just wish Obama had got something in trade when he gave it to them.

Of course, it was used for leverage. And we will never know if Obama got anything because Trump’s actions have butchered any agreement.

Nothing “funky” about it. U.S. Courts had declared that the money could be held to pay the damage claims of Iran’s victims.

All you’re telling us is that you dislike Trump’s actions even when you don’t know what they are.

You said that the price of crops is fine, so there is no need for a bailout.

Iran Commander “Vows to take harsher action against the US”. What are they waiting for? The resolution of war powers from their comrade?
Undoubtedly … Both ‘sides’ have had plans covering a multitude of possibilities…
Now it’s a sit back and wait and see scenario…

And it wasn’t distributed to Iran’s victims.
I don’t think we know that none of it was. What we do know is that Obama paid Iran what Iran claimed it was “owed”, and made the taxpayers pay the victims’ claims.

I never said there was a need for a “bailout” or even a price floor. And you don’t know whether anything has been/will be paid out or for what, any better than I do. You just want to attack Trump even when you don’t know why you’re doing it.

Umm, okay, it seems like if you are going to say this, you might provide a source instead of speculation

Well, let’s see what you said…
But farm prices for most commodities are pretty much in the mid-range; neither wonderful nor catastrophic; a little higher than historically.
Hard to figure why a bailout is needed if the prices for most commodities are 'a little higher than historically". There is a disconnect in your logic.

We knew the agreement was dodo when it was signed, it was an effort to normalize the status quo, not cause change in Iran.

Not really. We buy insurance not because we KNOW our house is going to burn down but just in case it does. If this bill is a price floor, it might never be used. But neither of us know that.

Well, let’s go back to Plan A and treat the Iranians as a cancer, because that has worked so well for the last 40 years.

Funny how farmers can’t really hold their own in a true marketplace and need socialism to protect them.

The decision to assassinate Major General Qasem Soleimani was obviously a big miscalculation on Trump’s part.
Well. That didn’t age well. 😝
I’m not sure what didn’t age well. The Trump administration is still struggling to give a coherent answer as to why they assassinated Suleimani. According to the Washington Post, Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah labeled the administration’s briefing on Iran “probably the worst briefing I have seen, at least on a military issue, in the nine years I’ve served in the United States Senate.” The Trump administration doesn’t seem to have any grand strategy in dealing with Iran.

The Iranians struck our military bases while purposely avoiding killing any Americans, thus allowing themselves to respond while also giving Trump an off ramp from further escalation. But they will probably be biding their time to strike at us in less obvious ways at a time of their choosing, perhaps through one of their many proxies.

What didn’t age well is exactly what I quoted, your statement that this was a “big miscalculation”.

I find your spin hilarious, that the Iranians gave Trump an “out”. They are the ones who took the “off ramp”, as you say. We killed their terrorist General, they shot some missiles into the dirt so they could tell their people how big and strong they are and that they killed “80 Americans”. That is what an off ramp looks like. Meanwhile they shot down a civilian airliner like a bunch of morons, pretended it crashed, then finally admitted to it and their citizens are protesting their regime and calling for its downfall. Iraq pretended to be upset about it but quickly invited the US to continue to stay in the country. It could hardly have worked out better for the Trump administration. That Iran may try some other proxy attack against us or an ally in the future is a given. They were doing that anyways. They had been escalating attacks against us for the past few years. What we bought was at least a temporary cessation of their escalation and we took their most important player off the board in doing so.

It is amazing to me that the majority of the media has been spouting Iranian propaganda in defense of the regime. And we see it repeated here. Iran as the maligned party, what a joke!
