Thank you! Enjoyed Pope Francis’ view of science as it relates Covid-19…

“In this tragedy, that humanity as a whole continues to experience, science and technology have, of themselves, proved insufficient,” Francis said. “What has proved decisive instead is the outpouring of generosity and courage shown by so many persons.”
The original study produced by King’s College, London, in March was off by orders of magnitude, predicting 2.2 million coronavirus deaths in the United States alone and leading to panicked responses around the globe. “This should spur us to move beyond the technocratic paradigm, understood as a sole or dominant way to deal with problems,” the pope said Friday. “That paradigm, born of a mindset that sought mastery over the natural world, was based on the erroneous presupposition that an infinite quantity of energy and resources are available, that it is possible to renew them quickly, and that the negative effects of the exploitation of the natural order can be easily absorbed.”
What will it take to get a rational reaction to Covid? Yes, it is a threat, but the reaction by some in the United States has not made sense nor has it been rational.

Thoughts?! Debate? Please…?

So what parts haven’t made sense?

Face coverings?
Social Distancing?
Limiting large crowds?
Locking down place where elderly reside?
Throwing 3 to 4 trillion dollars at it without an actual plan?
Lack of unified national response?
Lack of clear guidance from the federal gov?

Politics and group dynamics preclude a rational reaction. At this point there’s nothing left that can practically get done.

Simple math suggest we need 80-90% compliance to stop the spread. That’s beyond unlikely so we’re going to watch 1-5% perish not just from the illness directly but other related factors.

Thanks for the response @farronwolf … at least somebody is up for a debate! 😎. As for your questions…

-Face coverings? … no problem with masks…see attached picture with St. Brigid’s cross 😷. I wear my mask when near others.
-Social Distancing? Questionable…especially when in comes to in person classes K-12 and Universities.
-Limiting large crowds? No need to see Foo Fighters anytime soon. I can wait.
-Locking down place where elderly reside? Absolutely! Do everything to protect elderly and those who may be immunocompromised…
-Throwing 3 to 4 trillion dollars at it without an actual plan? Questionable…Science is limited in its understanding. Putting money into research is not such a bad thing…even without a clear goal. Would need more details of what 3 - 4 trillion you are referring to.
-Lack of unified national response? Questionable…please see my response below…
-Lack of clear guidance from the federal gov? Questionable…Some states continue to ban gyms and hair stylists. I go to the gym. I swim. Chlorine kills lots of things. I fled the state I usually live in to live in another state where I can swim and help family. I come into my gym with a mask, get my temperature checked, and I am nowhere near anybody else throughout my effort to swim ~30 minutes. Should the federal government ban people going to the gym to swim? This is absurd and unnecessary.

Plus…I’ve had the cough…it took me months to get over. I was exposed several times with more than one person who tested positive. I stopped coughing. How on earth could I still be a threat?!

Unfortunately one of its newer side effects runs a great risk of affecting the fertility of young adults.

I quit reading when I saw Breitbart put “science” in scare quotes. I also noted that is where they departed from the words of Pope Francis, his intent, and what he literally said, to begin the spin into weirdness. Take out their two commentary paragraphs, and one is only left with what the Pope said.

God help us all when I have children! Even Covid is not going to stop that madness! 😎 😇 :alien:

Lets not start with the ‘like the flu’ rhetoric. This is very different.nehat was first thought to be a respiratory disease is looking like its not.

Mumps affects fertility and people dont heal.

I’d like this, but I don’t like it. I agree with it! Covid was in the United States in December…at least in December…some medical professionals claim October. I lived in a hotspot…I had a friend hospitalized several times in December with all of the Covid symptoms. I really believe we’ve been dealing with Covid since then. Sadly, I believe it’s too late to do any wide spread quarantine. This reality has got to be accepted.

The 3-4 trillion I was referring to is the stimulus money. Very little accountability and most of it will never be recovered.

As far as the swimming pool. Pretty much social distancing is required if one is actually exercising.

The gym with either free weights or machines not so much. Free weights require spotters at times. Machines are used by multiple people, sometimes right after one another. Somewhere I heard that gyms were considered a high transmission place. Unless things are wiped down between each person this would make sense.

As far as different states taking different approaches, since there wasn’t a clear message coming from the federal gov. on what should be done that allowed for a haphazard approach.

Why do we have HHS and CDC if the professionals at these agencies are going to be ignored when they give advice? Have they changed their recommendations over the course of this virus, yes. That is part of the scientific process. When new information is available, you adapt to the new data.

And therefore we should … what?
Accept that 1-5% of us will die, many many more will get injured and that there’s not much we can really do.

Reinfection is likely a thing so I have little reason to believe a vaccine will work long term.

Realistically, I don’t believe we should have unelected officials mandating complicated decisions that balance medical realities and societal realities. That’s not their jobs. If the NIH and CDC want to give out money for people to do research, that’s great! That’s their jobs…, but nationwide policy is not their jobs.

I didn’t say they should be mandating policy. I said they should be giving advice.

That advice based on scientific data and models should not be taken and simply ignored by certain people who, for no other reason than their own political ambitions, spout off things which contradict their advice.

The advice should be studies, and plans formulated based on that advice which do the least harm to society.

200,000 means Covid-19 is not as deadly, as a percentage of the US population, compared to the flu epidemics that the US faced in the 1950s and 1960s. The US had about half the population back then. We did nothing as a country back then to combat these epidemics. There has to be an honest conversation about this. I’m not saying we should do nothing, I’m just saying shutdowns pushing us towards depressions aren’t justified. CDC figures…

You must also account for the advancement in medical technology since the 50’s and 60’s when calculating deaths then vs now.

According to Dr. Fauci, wearing masks, social distancing and personal hygiene are about 80-90% as effective as a complete shutdown. Even those measures were dismissed by some because they infringe upon one’s liberties.

I have been wearing them, and my office is still pretty much closed to the public.

I listen to the experts not the politicians. Reasonable people would.
