So my brother who went from sorta catholic to super southern Baptist was commenting on a post about the church shooting in SC saying this

“The President’s already trying to use this horrible event to pursue more gun control as he implied in his speech today. smh. You’re absolutely right John. I heard this kid ran out of ammo and had to reload. If someone there was exercising their 2nd amendment rights, they could have stopped this lunatic saved someone’s life. Probably their own”

So basically it sounds like he thinks people should have guns in church. Is this something that’s acceptable from a catholic stand point?

Another way of interpreting our President’s statements, was that he has resigned to the fact that further gun control action on a Federal level is politically impossible at this time and that he wasn’t going to pursue it.

From a legal perspective, in South Carolina licensed concealed carry holders can carry in a church or other established religious sanctuary with the express permission is given by the appropriate church official or governing body. There’s currently legislation in the Carolina’s to allow certain licensed conceal carry holders too carry in a church without seeking prior express approval.

From a Catholic perspective, it’s been discussed before on here, and at least the last time it was discussed, no one found any specific stance on the issue that was recognized by the Church.

Is it worth being squeamish about guns if it means that more people get killed? For people like Roof, a gun-free zone is a target-rich environment.

I know a couple of protestant ministers who carry concealed to church. I’ve done it too, as have many of my friends and relatives, both Catholic and Protestant.

Methinks it would be up to the pastor, or at least the bishop.

4th degree K of C carry swords, yes? So there seems to be no official ban on weapons in church.

I really cannot begin to explain how absolutely crazy this sounds to an Australian.

Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. Matthew

Substitute gun for sword.

So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?” John

Could this not be said of all the martyrs that night?

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew

You became imitators of [Paul, Barnabas] and of the Lord, **for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering **with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. First Thessalonians

I think we should look for the answers in the Gospel, not the political platform of the NRA.

Some states allow concealed weapons in colleges. I suppose that they would allow concealed weapons in churches also. I would vote against such.

Some states want elementary school teachers to carry guns; fear of incidents like Sandy Hill & Columbine. There are companies that teach teachers to take the offense when under attack by a crazy person. Uh, I confess there were probably several teAchers who would be tempted to shoot me while I was in school. What sad times we face due to a decline in morals.

I’m fine with the control of the acquisition of handguns, provided that FIRST we get ALL firearms out of the hands of the criminals and the people with mental illnesses. Until then, as far as I’m concerned, “gun control” means not hitting what you didn’t mean to hit.

Is there a Catholic teaching against using weapons for self defense? Certainly not. Christ’s disciples carried weapons. The Swiss Guards at St. Peter’s Basilica carry weapons.

… and to anybody outside the US, at least in any civilised country.
Particularly those who never threw off the yoke of British oppression, and are happy to continue with a British royal as their head of state.

I guess the American founders saw the need to throw out the oppressors, and made sure the Constitution included the right keep and bear arms for future generations.

Canada seems to be doing all right as a country, and it appears to me to be a bit cleaner than the country just to the south of it. I don’t really understand the necessity of having a British royalty. But at the same time, I don’t see life in Canada all that much different from life in the USA, except that the Canadian cities seem to be more neatly kept and less dirty. It is see for example, as you cross the border from Hamilton Canada to Buffalo NY.

Canada is like a nice quiet married couple who live upstairs from a strip club. 😃

I agree - I love visiting Canada, it’s clean and beautiful, and the people friendly. It’s just that our origins as nations have followed a different path, perhaps partially explaining why our society seems odd to them,
