Is anyone else thinking of that episode of “The Simpsons,” where Homer went to the All-You-Can-Eat seafood buffet, only to get thrown out at closing time though he hadn’t had all he could eat?

i worked at a buffet and my managers would always cringe when people over 200 pounds came in
I don’t know. I have seen some really thin people at buffets seriously pack it away, while large people barely eat salad.

I don’t understand why people eat junk, when for the same price they could go to a nice resturant and get a real meal?? For the price of just about any All You Can Eat Buffet place, we can get just as full on a great steak and side fixings and the kids eat at place where the other diners (usually) don’t act completely without basic manners. For the cost of those buffets they could buy more than they could eat in 1 meal at the grocery store and just stay home in the peace and quiet and eat it the way they like it.

I can’t stand them! My dc have only sat to eat at one twice and that was too often. But then again, that’s 1 time more than they’ve ever had McD’s too… If I’m going to waste money eating out - it’s going to be for a nice meal and all the service too. Otherwise, I’d just rather stay home.

I went once when the new China Buffet opened in our neighborhood and never returned. Kids stick their hand in, adults cough on food, flipping hair ect. It grossed me out. My husband is a chef so maybe I know a little too much about proper hygine when handling food (they wear gloves and headcovering, wash hand constantly, at least where he works) before it comes out to you. Where as these places no matter what proper hygine goes on in the kitchen, once its “out” on the floor its free game for all germs.:bigyikes:

Yes! The only reason we ever go to a buffet is because the ravenous one in our Mutt and Jeff act (the tall, skinny one) demands more food than can be ordered cheaply at a regular joint. The short, plump one would rather eat 300 calories at home. *

However, a compromise is made. We go to a buffet where we know exactly when the food comes out.*

I dislike Chinese food so I avoid them. Ryan’s food is so bland that, if I go there, I fill up on salad and fruits. Golden Corral is 25 miles across town, so that’s out.

About 20 miles in the other direction in a small farming town is a buffet to die for. They have a small salad and dessert bar-nothing special there. The main bar, though, is full of all kinds of dishes you don’t usually find in restaurants - Beaufort stew, liver nips, all sorts of veggies, seasoned, not just dumped out of a can and heated, barbecue pork, and the best fried chicken I have eaten since my mother died. Old food is no problem because from about 11 until 8, there are always 50 or more people in line to eat. My favorite there is the wishbone, which you have to ask for. They must come from monster chickens because they are as large as my fist. I don’t go more than once a month because I always overeat.

Across the street is not a vet’s office, but a chicken processing plant. I guess they get the pick.

A mention of Chinese Buffet as dinner on another thread leads me to ask the question… am I the only one who hates them? My hatred is not reserved for Buffets of Chinese food, but for the entire restaurant buffet idea.

A buffet at home for a large gathering of friends or family can be wonderful. A buffet at the Parish Hall (or in the Fellowship Hall for non-Catholics) is also fine. I can even suffer through one at a convention or wedding event.

When the average American spots a buffet in a restaurant, the resulting behavior is not a pretty sight. The food is below average on a restaurant buffet… I can go on and on.

Anyone else? Buffet horror stories?
I used to like them, but lately it is getting kind of disgusting. I suppose the higher-priced ones are a little better. Are table manners entirely forgotten? Sweet Tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest is the exception to the rule…they’re great.

That being the second reccomendation of Sweet Tomatoes, I may just have to plan a trip and test out that buffet 🙂

Ditto. Another thing about buffets–a coroner said it’s really not the TYPE of food so much that kills a person, it’s just **TOO MUCH FOOD, **in general. Interesting huh–and quite true too. Our bodies were not made for such.

Yes, they are in a different class of buffet restaurants. I didn’t realize they were down south, though? Glad to hear they’re widely available.

because, no matter how hard they try, the sneeze guard is NEVER good enough…

They are not here, thus my “planning a trip” - I’ve not seen the great northwest for years and years 🙂

Buffets in general grose me out! everyone touches the spoons and the germs crawl and slide on down the spoon into the trough eww…

I found one that is an exception to the rule… Hollywood and Vine, a buffet, style restuarant at MGM studios at Disney World. They had the best food and it was very fresh! The only buffet in the world I would recommend. We were all impressed!

so true so true!

A lady who was in my poetry class in college worked at Golden Corral She said it was disgusting to her, like pigs at a trough!

I think it all depends on the place.
In Canada, Tucker’s Marketplace is pretty good. Also with the laws and standards here, they have to be pretty clean and careful, as they can have the a food inspector in at anytime and if anything is wrong they get shut down, so…
Though it also depends on the customers and how the food is exposed. When we go to a buffet (rare) I am constantly after my son to not touch the food. ALways hope everyone washes their hands, especially after using the washroom.
Prior to having DS, would love going to buffets and overeat to make it worth the money. But since having DS (maybe an age thing) I tend to find it is a waste. Also a bother to keep watching DS.

Well they don’t. This is a fact, and should make all of us think twice before EVER eating at a fast food restaurant that doesn’t use gloves. Only Subway is the only one around here that uses gloves. Once in a hamburger joint drive-thru, I saw some dude wipe his nose then go back to fixing the burgers. EWWWW SO gross.

My fiance, who loves Chinese buffets, makes note of the fact that at every single one in Raleigh, there is an animal hospital across the street- no joke! He has hypothesized that there is an underground tube connecting the two for a direct supply of cat meat.

“The cat’s in the kettle at the Peking Moon…” -Weird Al, remake of Cat in the Cradle.

I’m not a buffet fan either. I feel so heavy after, and I never get my money’s worth since I’m a light eater. I used to like them when I was little, didn’t care the food was second-rate, and could pack away 4 plates without feeling full or getting fat.
I don’t eat Chinese food except on Christmas when I celebrate Jewish Christmas with
my Housemate.
I love buffets in general however and I don’t want to read that book because it’s going
to ruin it for me!
Chinese restaurants in Washington DC actually were cited for using alley cats and
dogs in their menu back in the fifties.
Ever since then I can’t eat Chinese food that contains any meat…that’s the power of
suggestion!

Buffets are yukky., I have a hard enough time eating out anyway!

*I am not big on buffets, either…I’m a germaphobe, myself. 😃 *

I worry about germs, in a public buffet style restaurant. So, we rarely (if ever) eat at buffet restaurants.

The glass shield over the salad bar (also known as a “sneeze-guard”) is there for a reason. But I sometimes wonder how effective those things are. Ick. lol. I agree with you. We don’t like them.
