By what authority did five major US States simultaneously stop counting votes?

That’s Trump and his supporters invoking the fake Cinderella rule.

When the clock strikes midnight tonight, nothing will magically change. The president seems to think otherwise. In a tweet last Monday, which Twitter blocked as potentially misleading, Donald Trump proclaimed: “Must have final total on November 3rd.” He said that “it would be very, very proper and very nice if a winner were declared on November 3 instead of counting ballots for two weeks,” an alternative he deemed “totally inappropriate” and not “by our laws.” On Wednesday, Trump said at a press conference in Las Vegas, “Hopefully, the few states remaining that want to take a lot of time after November 3 to count ballots, that won’t be allowed by the various courts.”

Can’t be. It was in the very same speech that he said he would go to court, that he referred to the fact that counting had stopped.

Yes but why literally stop counting?
Trump said he was taking it to court and declared a win. Maybe thats why it stopped? Just a guess
I mean that’s definitely not why. Sequentially, that is not the order in which the events took place.

I have no intention of wading into an argument over whether Trump should or shouldn’t have said ____.

But with regards to those states that ceased counting… it’s not as if that was unexpected. One of those states in particular is apparently famously bad at getting their votes counted, and took a few weeks during whatever their last major election event was.

I will say, though I know I know, I’m a foreigner… I think it’s absurd that they’re waiting until 10am to resume counting. As someone who’s done shift work and many jobs where you just have to get it done, and work overnight, I find it frankly gross that for something as important as an emotionally intense national election, any state vote-counting apparatus wouldn’t be prepared in advance to either be equally competent as other states in the same country (to finish counting same day), or to at least show enough respect for their fellow countrymen to have people work the night shift counting.

10am? 10am?? What is that?

Again, I know, not my country. But for a job that’s technically supposed to be completed on one day (and for which an organization has months to prepare), to not even be willing to keep working overnight, and simply announce they’re going to bed and will resume counting work at 10am seems just insanely insulting to their fellow Americans, from where I sit.

But hey, maybe Americans feel differently. Who am I.

Surely that’s a reason to continue counting, not to stop? And isn’t it odd that all five states stopped counting within minutes of each other?

As you say, surely for something as important as this they should lay on shifts to keep the process going.

Maybe this is simply normal (that’s why this thread asks by what authority). Does anyone know of similar instances in the past?

Trump said in that conference he is going to the supreme court and wants all voting to stop. All voting had stopped by then hadnt it? Wasnt he referring to wanting all vote counting to stop?

The president pledged to fight the results of the election at the supreme court.

“We will be going to the US supreme court. We want all voting to stop,” Trump said.

Election officials in key swing states continue to count valid ballots, and that process could continue for days.

Trump further claimed
This is a fraud on the American public,” the president said a the White House. “This is an embarrassment to our country.”

I took all this to mean Trump wanted all vote counting to stop and was going to the supreme court over vote fraud.

Well to the latter I don’t know, and wouldn’t have any specific speculation to make myself.

But to the former, of course I agree. As far as I’m concerned from the moment vote counting begins, there should be never-ending shift work 24/7 of staff counting votes until its finished.

I mean I can’t repeat it enough. Going to bed and announcing no one will resume counting until 10am. Come on, Allegheny County. Show some respect for the people that work night shifts all across the country all the time. You’ll end up paying staff for the same number of hours – so hire more individuals and bring them on in rotating shifts.

What does the fox news link say that Vz linked. brb

Trump added Wednesday: “This is a very big moment. This is a major fraud on our nation … So we’ll be going to the U.S. Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at four o’clock in the morning and add them to the list.”

“We will win this and as far as I’m concerned we already have won it,” the president continued, despite the fact that he has not yet won the election.

@Maximian does Trump have the power to stop the count? Would he need a Supreme Court halt on it today or tomorrow?

I wonder if he’s talking about Pennsylvania’s plan to count ballots that arrive up until November 6th.

A high court has already told Pennsylvania they can. Maybe Trump’s indicating he wants that decision appealed?

Anyway, I’m turning the computer off for a bit. Ciao!

He didn’t say “stop counting” he said “stop voting”! You aren’t allowed to vote after polls close.

He thinks the counting has stopped so as to sneak in extra votes before resuming counting

That is exactly what is going to happen. they wont be sneaking in extra votes, there will be dumptrucks full of 100% biden votes showing up. there will be more votes than people allowed to vote in counties.

Who cares that biden is a crook? Not his voters that is for sure.

Im finding all over the place that it’s reported that Trump called for an end to votes being counted. Can anyone find a link to video of him actually saying that? I believe it’s fake news based on a call for an end to (post deadline) voting but I would like to be sure - in fact iI am certain we all would since without truth we are nothing.

He said it in his late night/early morning White House press conference where he declared he had won and also that he was going to the Supreme court due to fraud.
Go through the entirety of that 2 or 3 am press conference for it.
Thats why I asked if he has the power to stop the count.

Joe Biden’s campaign says it will fight any efforts by President Donald Trump to go to the US Supreme Court to prevent ballots from being tabulated.

In a statement sent before 4am Wednesday local time (8pm AEDT), Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said Trump’s statement that he will “be going to the US Supreme Court” and wants “all voting to stop” was “outrageous, unprecedented and incorrect”.

its in that press conference. The Biden side have responded with that.

The Trump campaign is asking for donations for the fight to ‘stop the left stealing the election’
Its sent out fundraiser emails for this.

If Trump has this power its going to be a long wait for an outcome.

The main problem is that we have several states in which the city population outnumbers the rural population. The rural votes get counted first and they lean R. Then the city results start overwhelming the rural votes and the state flips.

Happens every election.

Thank you. I listened to that speech and I can only find him saying “stop voting .” It’s perfectly possible I missed something, can you (or anyone) send me a link identifying the rough place where he calls for an end to counting, specifically?

wants “all voting to stop
Yes. Voting. He said nothing about counting votes. Obviously voting has to stop after polls are closed. He is accusing the other side of letting past-deadline votes in.
