the power to “trial a pope?” More specifically the power of someone who is crazy to dig up a corpse and do something foolish?
*someone *who was a pope
I always like to give the benifit of a doubt, so I am just going to presume this is facetious Austrailian humor that I am not grasping.
What benefit do I need? Someone judged the Pope after his death.

Was this ruling illegal?

No, this line of reasoning is specious and pedantic.

But you and I go back, Montalban. When it comes to your thinking on this matter, I appreciate that you take a special interest in noting Roman scandal.

Hey Montalban, did you even read the rest of this thread? It will answer all this stuff without anyone having top go over it gain.

Why’s it specious? They trialled him. Were they themselves condemned for doing so?

Like for like. Spend some time on the eastern Christian threads. 😉

(also I didn’t start this thread).😊

No, I haven’t read the entire thread, I came to it rather late. Any particular post you have in mind? Note that when people come to my threads, I repeat myself for their benefit.

I also note that your own responses on the first page comprise of “I don’t care (what happened then)”.

Post 12 would work…

Tried. They tried him. I think that is the verb you are looking for.

What are you looking for in the wake of this or hoping to prove? What could satisfiy your ideals here?

Are you looking for a church document to that in turn excoriates this silliness?

I have no idea what "Like for like. Spend some time on the eastern Christian threads. 😉 " refers to.

“(also I didn’t start this thread)” Nope, you just jumped on like a good anti-Roman opportunist.

Thanks, I’ll take a quick look

hum hum hum…

Okay I’ve had a look, all this says is a general thing about Popes. It doesn’t deal with the specific issue. Were the people who dug up the Pope and trialled him ever condemned?

That of course would be the condemnation of another Pope; Stephen VI (who was in fact deposed, and strangled - if I can trust wiki)

From Wiki
The macabre spectacle turned public opinion in Rome against Stephen. Rumors circulated that Formosus’s body, after washing up on the banks of the Tiber, had begun to perform miracles. A public uprising led to Stephen being deposed and imprisoned. While in prison, in July or August of 897, he was strangled to death.

In November 897, Pope Theodore II (897) convened a synod that annulled the Cadaver Synod and rehabilitated Formosus ordered him reburied in Saint Peter’s Basilica in pontifical vestiments. In 898 John IX (898—900) also nullified the Cadaver Synod, convening two synods (one in Rome, one in Ravenna) which confirmed the findings of Theodore II’s synod, ordered the acta of the Cadaver Synod destroyed, and prohibited any future trial of a dead person.

However, Pope Sergius III (904—911), who as bishop had taken part in the Cadaver Synod as a co-judge, overturned the rulings of Theodore II and John IX, reaffirming Formosus’s conviction,[16] and had a laudatory epitaph inscribed on the tomb of Stephen VI.

Read the thread… all this has already been discussed…debated whatever.

Can I buy a vowel? But, yes, you are correct.
What are you looking for in the wake of this or hoping to prove? What could satisfy your ideals here?
So rather than respond, you need to find ulterior motives!
Are you looking for a church document to that in turn excoriates this silliness?
That would help. You constantly laughing it off, or diverting to calling my motives into play doesn’t help.

Refers to your complaint about people who dig up dirt on another’s church.
“(also I didn’t start this thread)” Nope, you just jumped on like a good anti-Roman opportunist.
Ouch, so I’m forbidden to comment on anything that’s against the Roman church, what about other Catholics, such as the Maronites? Do I have your permission to discuss them?

You might want to stop and think about your responses as they vacillate between open hostility to anyone discussing anything to your church to a flippant brushing aside of the who issue… something I get a lot from Moslems and Mormons on the non-Catholic forums.

No one’s forcing you to respond. I read the post you cited that has nothing to do with what actually happened to the people who TRIED* the dead pope.

*- my thanks to ASimpleSinner for clearing up that mistake.

Lets start over - you are looking for WHAT in the wake of this to prove WHAT?

as for “Refers to your complaint about people who dig up dirt on another’s church.”

How does that have to deal with me?

Church Militant takes a very rational, sober view of this trial, and such.

It doesn’t affect one iota my faith, and it shouldn’t for the rest of true believers. Maybe they did such things in those days.
I agree with his appraisal. God be praised.

It doesn’t have to. But does that mean it’s beyond discussion?

More specificly, what aspect, are you looking to discuss? And what resolution are you offering based on what did or did not happen in the wake of this event?

Let’s just say that your paranoia shouldn’t cloud this discussion thread. Just because you may think that there’s ulterior motives, doesn’t mean that there has to be

If you want to champion a certain degree of ethics then you might want to go over there and preach where you’re most needed.

Unless you’re one who only points out sins in non-Catholic eyes.

I don’t understand how that answers my question.

The discussion is long over…where were you?

Frankly the truth is that I think this is weird and could really care less about it.

When I’m dead they can dig me up and say anything they please and it will matter about as much then as this does now.🤷
Sayonara…

As I mentioned, the Romans were quite fed up with their Pope because of this episode (and others) and they imprisoned Stephen and then strangled him.
