Durbin refuses to apologize for Guantanamo Bay comments

CHICAGO Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says he won’t apologize for comments comparing American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Nazis and Soviet gulags.
News of the Democrat’s comparison created a buzz around the Internet today, fueled by sound bites of yesterday’s Senate floor speech on radio talk shows. By this afternoon, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna asked Durbin to apologize.

Durbin says the Bush administration should apologize for abandoning the Geneva Conventions.

Human-rights activist groups and some lawmakers – mostly Democrats – want Bush to close the prison.

But administration officials say some of the people who have been detained at Guantanamo later return to fight against the United States.

I would suggest he seek some serious psychological counseling as he is clearly not in touch with reality. When someone so greatly overstates an argument they lose all credibility.

Why is a Democrat using the gulag system as a symbol of evil?

In 1944 Vice-President Henry Wallace, Owen Lattimore and other New Dealers went to the Kolyma concentration camps–which spanned an area the size of France–and praised them.

When a United States Senator makes statements that can easily place our servicemen in harms way, that Senator needs to either make a full recantation of those statements, or he/she needs to resign. All Durbin did was cause Muslims to have another reason to hate us even more and you can bet they will use his examples against us. He should resign today!

The exact same thing can be send with regard to Bush.

He has put more servicemen in harm’s way than anyone, and his entire policy causes Muslims to hate us even more - particularly his blind eye toward the abuses as Guantanamo.

Let’s Really Compare U.S. Soldiers to Nazis

So I see Democrat Senator Dick Durbin has been comparing U.S. soldiers to Nazis because they turned the A/C down during an interrogation.
On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees.

…If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime–Pol Pot or others–that had no concern for human being.

Have you ever seen a Hypothermia Chart? Basically it is a chart that tells you that if you get dumped into cold water how long you can expect to live. ie: If your boat sinks -or Ted Kennedy is driving- and you get dumped into 50 degree water, you’ll have about an hour to be rescued before hypothermia sets in and you die.

This data has saved thousands of lives… But have you ever wondered how we got it??? I mean, you can’t exactly throw people in cold water and see how long it takes for them to die now can you?

That’s exactly how we got that data.

Nazi scientists took Jews, threw them in cold water and timed how long it took them to die.

That is the group of people Democrat Dick Durban is comparing U.S. soldiers to because they left the A/C on during an interrogation.

Dick Durbin is ignorant of history, a complete jackass, and owes everyone in uniform an apology – then he should resign.

S.L.0.P–Standard Liberal Operating Procedure. Somebody else does it too (or worse). The Clinton excuse.

Democrats voted for the war. Democrats cheered Clinton when in 1993 he launched the first of 4 military campaigns against Iraq. They cheered when he invaded Haiti, bombed the Serbs into the dirt, tossed cruise missiles into Afghanistan and the Sudan. They voted almost unanimously for regime change in Iraq in 1998 and voted for it again in 2002.
Hillary Clinton, on the Senate floor, said Saddam harbvored Al Qaeda members. Daschle, Kerry, Kennedy, Pelosi, Berger, Byrd and other Democrats all warned of Saddam’s chemical, biological and nuke programs from when Clinton was in office until just weeks before the war began.

But now Democrats are great humanitarians. The war was a mistake. Bush lied. We’re torturing innocent men. American runs a gulag system. Same exact humanitarian **** they pulled during the Cold War when millions were being slaughtered by marxist totalitatians. America’s actions fighting mass murderers were , to the liberal mind, worse than what the Khymer Rouge, Mao, Kim Il Sung, Castro and Stalin did.

In a sick way I almost wish a Democrat were president. We would not have to put up with this BS which is getting American troops killed.

I suppose planes were crashed into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center because the Muslims loved us. As I recall, that happened before we went into Afghanistan and Iraq. So did the embassy bombings, Somalia, and the bombing of the USS Cole.

As for the abuses at Guantanamo, you mean alleged abuses, don’t you? If not, please be specific and cite your sources. An anti-Bush rant just ain’t gonna cut it.

A Tale of Two Senators

My WeeklyStandard.com column, “Real Religious Intolerance,” discusses the latest charges of “religious fascism” directed at religious conservatives from a lefty in the context of Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput’s speech to the OCSE last week.

The absurd rhetoric discussed in that piece got upped past the point of sanity by Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin on Wednesday night when he declared that the FBI reports on Gitmo detail actions that, if the reader did not know that American soldiers were involved, would suggest the actions of “Nazis, the Soviets in their gulags,” and Pol Pot. (Radioblogger has the actual Durbin audio and transcripts of extensive discussions I had on Durbin’s comparison of the American military to the most bloodthirsty regimes of the last century with Mark Steyn as well as with law professors Erwin Chemerinsky and John Eastman.)

Durbin’s slander of the American military, and his refusal to apologize for it has now been picked up by Al Jazeera’s English operation. One can only wonder what the Arabic broadcasts are saying about the second ranking Democrat in the United States Senate’s declaration that only a “mad regime” like Pol Pot could run a Gitmo.

Durbin, like Newsweek before him, has handed our enemies a great propaganda victory, one that will echo through the years in madrassas and caves and whispered conversations among would-be killers of Americans. (“Even their highest officials admit they run camps like the Nazis and Pol Pot!” Hit audio.)

Durbin is trying to defend his remarks but this pathetic excuse for a legislator can count on blowback for years, especially as word of how his asinine comparison is playing in the radical world gets back to our country.

You can call the Congressional switchboard at 202-225-3121 and add your voice to the thousands who have demanded this obtuse pol apologize. But a better action would be to contribute to Minnesota Congressman Mark Kennedy, the Republican front-runner to replace another Democratic nutter, Mark Dayton, in the U.S. Senate. Kennedy’s campaign can be contributed to via his campaign website. Then e-mail your electronic receipt to every Democratic Senator you can find, telling them that a party with such a historically illiterate, careless buffoon as their #2 leader cannot be allowed anywhere near the national security controls of the United States.

The spread of Michael Moore’s disease into the Democratic Senate leadership is much commented on in the blogs, and great posts can be found at Powerline , The AmericanThinker, and LGF.

What is truly amazing is the relative silence of MSM on the Durbin meltdown. The New York Times, The Washington Post. The Chicago Sun Times and the San Francisco Chronicle picked up an AP account, but, to borrow from Bob Dole, “Where’s the outrage?”

www.hughhewitt.com Continued…

When in the course of making an argument about the logic being used by his opponents in the filibuster debate, Senator Rick Santorum compared the rationality of one argument to that of a hypothetical one being made by Hitler defending his occupation of France. It was an inelegant argument, and Santorum quickly apologized, even though he had not compared anyone at all to Hitler. “The result was predictable,” wrote Jonathan Chait in the Los Angeles Times. “The media flayed Santorum for ‘comparing Democrats to Hitler,’ and cited his comment as an example of fraying civility in the Senate. Santorum quickly apologized. Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, scolded, ‘Once again, Nazi imagery was used in a political debate, where it has no place.’”

But only a few weeks after Santorum’s flaying, and a few months after Robert Byrd compared GOP senators to Nazis, we know have Dick Durbin comparing the U.S. military to Nazis and Pol Pot’s butchers. Byrd is generally assumed to be beyond criticism because of his very advanced age, but Durbin is the #2, and he is unapologetic. Durbin’s made a claim that our servicepeople are acting like Nazis and Khmer Rouge and Stalin’s secret police. What are the editorial pages saying two days later?

Nothing.

Durbin slandered the military on Tuesday night. It was debated all day yesterday and will be debated all day today. Will any MSM editorialist have the guts to call Durbin on his remarks by tomorrow?

I don’t mean to sound condescending, but I think your logic is flawed.

Bush hasn’t put more servicemen in harm’s way than anyone–our enemies have done that. Do you accuse the police chief or dispatchers or putting our policemen in harm’s way when 9-11 is called??? We were attacked. They started it. Saddam funded terrorists, and increased payouts after we were attacked. He was part of this war, and is thankfully gone.

His entire policy causes Muslims to hate us even more? Nonsense. He has defended Islam as a religion of peace, he has liberated more Muslims than any man in history, and with Saddam he has removed the man who murdered more Muslims than any man in history. The fact that Muslims see Bush as their enemy is puzzling, but it makes you wonder if they really know who their friends are.

Blind eye towards Guantanomo? More nonsense. If that is abuse, I wish that was the extent of what many innocents endure at the hands of terrorists (you know, those people you are so desparate to protect from Bush).

I respect your right to dislike Bush, and to oppose the War on Terror. But if you want to make the case that we somehow are mistreating people because they are Muslim (instead of people because they are terrorists, not because they are Muslim), then you really need to have justification for saying so. Otherwise, spreading such falsities are what really make things more dangerous (cases in point: Quran “desecration” false reports, and calling our troops “nazis” when in fact they are very kind to peaceful Muslims).

I hope that didn’t sound mean. Sometimes hard to be concise and make it sound right in type.

Blessings to you.

Thanks. I’ll contact him. Too bad he doesn’t accept mail from those outside Illinois.

I’ve, on occassion, spoke too him. He’s always nice, but I won’t be able to resist telling him how inexcusable this is if we should be in the same room again.

And this applies how?

wabrams,

Durbin has given aid and comfort to our enemies–treason!

Durbin’s my senator. Santorum used the Nazi/Hitler thing recently. I thought that always meant that you were losing the argument when you went to that fallback position.

Help me find a spokesman for the soldiers at Gitmo.

I am looking for the spouse, father, mother, or adult sibling or child of any service man or woman serving at Gitmo. I would like to interview them on today’s show about their reaction to Senator Dick Durbin’s slander of their husband/son/daughter/parent. I will also be glad to interview any service member who has served alongside of a member of the military presently stationed at Gitmo.

E-mail me at hugh@hughhewitt.com with a phone number and the name of service man or woman you are connected with. My producer will call you to arrange an interview. If you are afraid that speaking out will put your loved one at risk, we can keep their name off the air.

Radio news is leading most hours with the pseudo-news that two Republican congressmen agree with nutter Kucinich that a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq should be established. No reporting on Durbin’s slander on the military and recruiting assist to al Qaeda. Recall what ABC News White House correspondent Terry Moran said on my show:

“There is, Hugh, I agree with you, a deep anti-military bias in the media . One that begins from the premise that the military must be lying, and that American projection of power around the world must be wrong. I think that that is a hangover from Vietnam, and I think it’s very dangerous.”

The proof of that bias just keeps piling up, and the pass being given Durbin by MSM is one of the most powerful exhibits yet. But the blog swarm and talk radio are guaranteeing that even a near total MSM blackout will not protect Durbin from the fallout of his intention and unapologetic equating of our troops at Gitmo with Nazis, Stalinists, and the Khmer Rouge.

Kos has weighed in for the left side of the blogosphere: " The Wingers are freakin’ out about Durbin right now, trying to shut his efforts to speak the truth."

The Democratic Party’s #2 in the Senate is anti-military, because to speak slander about the military --even a specific subset of the military-- is to be anti-military. The left’s #1 blogger is supporting the slander. Is it ok yet to assert that the left is anti-military, even if some, like Kos, have served in uniform? Objectively speaking, it is anti-military to equate soldiers, sailors, arimen and Marines as Nazis, Stalinists, and Khmer Rouge, right? It is anti-military to hand huge propaganda wins to our enemies, isn’t it?

The invitation to Durbin or Kos to appear on the program is open as well.
