Calling local stores to remove racy magazines from checkout lines!

This is something that has always bothered me but I haven’t actually done anything about it yet. I’ve been caught up in other big issues.

I remember when the Media Play (they sell electronic equipment, games, CD’s) near me added a very large “adult video” section to their store. All the movies there were covered with the translucent plastic covers, but it was adjacent to all the other sections. I had never seen such a cover and I wondered what they could be hiding. Imagine my surprise when I picked up the plastic cover. 😦 It was after that when I looked up and noticed the name of the section I had wondered into…

That Media Play went out of business two weeks later. 😛 I’m sure it was a coincidence, but I find it amusing nonetheless.

For now I guess the best thing to do is to complain, or cover them up. We need to strike at the root of the problem, though: our increasingly amoral society.

As far as that goes, I have no idea how to do it other than teaching by example. I would love a more active approach, but I haven’t come up with one yet. I’m open to suggestions…

No, but I won’t stand back and let my own children be exposed to it. I do know what is best for my family.
 
Innocuous? Really? Then there is no real interest in them? Or do you mean that no one cares anymore?

The whole point is that topless women or explicit pornography is degrading to the woman, and the viewer/buyer. It is a degradation of human dignity. I work in the media and the entire “entertainment” structure is degraded.

I would not want my daughter as a Page 3 girl.

This is a Catholic forum so I hope it doesn’t surprise if I point out that the choices Catholics have are the best choices. Jesus Christ said that He came to give us life more abundantly, both spiritual and physical. He also said “If you love me keep my commandments.” We Catholics regard Jesus Christ as a real person.

The rules, if you will, that we live by are not imposed but chosen. No one coerced me to be a Christian.

However, the western world has too many bad choices in front of it, with the only answer being: “Eh. So what? To each his own, right?”

Choice has been the rallying cry of the radical feminists, abortion supporters and euthenasia supporters, along with the pornographers. Don’t think the Page 3 Girl isn’t porn? You’re wrong. It’s mixed right in with the worst of it. I work in media and understand that a decades long campaign to get people to say “Oh what’s the big deal?” is still going on. “Who cares?Nobody should bother anybody about it.”

I certainly will object to it on human dignity grounds. I will certainly object to it on the grounds that it degrades the human person. I’ve studied as an artist. I have no problem with the unclothed human being, but the intent was to study not to exploit or sexualize or degrade. And that’s what we did.

Wake up my fellow Catholics.

Yes, it has really morphed into a complete piece of trash over the years–I’m a woman, and by and large, the smart, strong, beautiful women I know, are NOT reading that rag.:cool: (I say this because that is supposedly the audience they’re aiming at??) It is a shame that there are so many poor images out there of women…in various magazines.🤷
 
Too many young, attractive girls I know are dressing just like they’ve been told. It’s on TV, in the movies, in the magazines and so on. A piece of string for “underwear” and pants that don’t even go up to the waist. Do any of these celebrities or models have parents? Does Britney have a mom who cares if her daughter dresses like a prostitute?

This is the question to all the moms out there. Is it modesty or “But moooo om, all my friends dress like this!”

And then, is it, “Well, what are you going to do?” Who is the parent?

If all her friends dress like prostitutes, it’s time to find new friends. :rolleyes: Even though my daugther is only 12, I have to veto clothing she’d like. She KNOWS not to question me - I’m the Mom, I buy it, I wash it. It’s not really up for discussion… things I find morally objectional never are.

But before you pin that Mother of the Year award on me, … you’d better check back with me in four years to see how it’s going… 🤷

Jim you seemed to be looking for attention and apparently your method works well for you because you’re getting just that. If it truly doesn’t bother you, why bother with this thread. If it bothers someone else than they have free will to take action.

After all we live in a free society, and if a business practice offends someone it is perfectly legitimate to let that business know they are offended. It is up to the business to decide if they wish to take action or they are ok with losing the customer.
 
Hang in there mom. The 13 year old I know is smarter than all her older sisters and the most modest.

You know, I hate to say this, but I have seen such magazines before, and a lot of the time, I just turn away…but it was my daughter seeing it, and commenting on it that bugged me. The thing is…the model was wearing nothing, but a necklace…placed just so, to ‘cover’ her up to a degree. It doesn’t belong on a check out line in plain view. I think we just think of Sports Illustrated in this country, as ‘american’ and part of our culture…but, when nudity starts being put on the cover…and I am not a prude, nor do I find ‘art’ offensive…this is not art. This is a way to get men to buy Sports Illustrated…sales must be down if they feel the need to put naked models on their covers now.😊

I remember when SI had models like Paulina back in the 80’s with one piece suits on, and they sold tons! Not to get into a banter about SI, but my husband used to read it, and no longer does because he said…he said he just doesn’t feel right reading it…but, at this point, it is just out there, as far as the lengths they’re going to sell this thing.

I should write to SI, and ask them what sport the model on the cover is representing?🤷
 
And there it is, pornographers gradually putting partial nudity or nudity in public places not just to sell more ‘product’ but to get people to think “Who needs modesty?” Or “Hey. This is OK now.”

There’s a time and place for everything. Not this stuff in grocery stores. Between the internet and wrongly labeled ‘adult bookstores,’ what do the pornographers want? It’s not just money.

And I have already said it is fine for everyone to complain and take whatever steps they want. But I choose to do nothing and am told I am playing Russian Roulette with my soul. Since when has anyone on these forums become God to have even an inkling of where my soul might be headed? No. All of you feel free to protest. I do not and I won’t be any the worst for it.
 
No one’s forcing you to do anything Jim, but it is annoying, and pointless, when you chime in with “(whatever the topic it) don’t bother me.”

If you don’t want to be part of it, don’t. That’s between you and God. But you make a habit of criticizing others who are concerned about our children and what they are exposed to. You even went down as low as saying that we are on a witch hunt. This has nothing to do with a witch hunt. It has to do with morals that some Catholics take seriously. We try to do what God wants us to do. We’re not always perfect, but we try. God doesn’t want us exposing innocent children to these explicit images. He doesn’t even want adults looking at this smut. Some of us are concerned that our society is in the gutter. Other people could care less that their world is becoming another Sodom & Gommorah.

All that was aked was to move this where children can’t be exposed to it. Have you actually seen the cover of the magazine? Have you read the covers of any of these Cosmo magazines?

That is one of the advantages of living in a free market. If enough people threaten to take their dollars somewhere else, then stores finally listen. If you want to call it a witch hunt, so be it. I call it be a responsible parent and member of the society.
 
What is so bad asking for these magazines to be put behind a cover so everyone doesn’t have to be exposed to half-naked women when they check out their groceries.
