So he has two annulments? I didn’t know that.

Proceed.
Other marriages/divorces happened prior to his conversion. The Church already decided his current marriage is valid. Anyway, let’s talk about Callista’s appointment, not Newt.

Callista Gingrich, the wife of former US Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, will soon be nominated by President Trump to become the US ambassador to the Vatican, according to multiple media reports.

I wasn’t aware that mattered. I was an atheist when I got married the first time but I still had to apply for an annulment. Not everybody is granted one.

I does matter because the Vatican has turned down ambassadors that were divorced or in a same sex marriage (France I think). I think you are right that the church annulled his previous marriages so it’s none of our business. He is hopefully over his women chasing days.

She testified that she had a six-year affair with Gingrich while he was married to his second wife. Understand his annulment(s?) and conversion (02 and 09), but not how their marriage gets the blessing of the Church. Can the Vatican decline the appointment? Accepting her wouldn’t reflect well on the Church IMO.

Good luck with that!

OK, what are her qualifications other than being married to a powerful politician with whom she carried on an affair while he was married to his second wife?

When there is an annulment, there is no impediment for a valid marriage to occur. If you
understand the annulments and conversion, why don’t you “get” the blessing???

She is in the choir at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. I see her singing every time there is mass televised from there on EWTN. She stands out with her extremely blonde hair.

I think she’s a fine choice for an ambassador. There aren’t really any serious qualifications needed to be an ambassador to western European countries; in the past a lot of these people that have been appointed have simply been major donors to sitting presidents’ campaigns. I wouldn’t worry about her marriage situation if their current marriage is valid.

I’m not. There is the old fashioned ideas of scandal and penance.
While this is true.Taking this statement into consideration,if this is the criterion for holding any kind of public office,at least 95% of all politicians would be disqualified.

13 posts and not one about her being capable of an ambassadorship…I thought this was CAF, not ‘The View’ 🙂

You seem to be assuming that Callista Gingrich is unrepentant of her past sins and thinks adultery is fine and dandy. That is an assumption, as no one can read her heart. She is certainly NOT marching in pro-adultery parades, or otherwise openly and publicly supporting adultery.

How do you know she hasn’t undergone penance? Just because she didn’t get scourged in public? So if you committed sexual sin with a public figure, you have to undergo public penance? Even though if she’d cheated with a married Joe Schmoe, and he later divorced his wife, got an annulment, and married her, she would not be obligated to do such a thing.

Anyway, Mrs. Gingrich may or may not be “qualified” in the strict sense, but it seems par for the course that most of the ambassador positions are sinecures, or close to it.

I doubt the Vatican would reject her based on being “unqualified”, nor do I think they would reject her based on her past sins. She is currently in a valid Catholic marriage.

The cream doesn’t rise to the top. Most are unqualified.

No, I’m not assuming anything. I am suggesting that a penance could be an exit from public life and doing private penance.

You are right that past sins probably won’t matter. Where we are today current sins are hardly an issue.

Actually I asked about her qualifications. They seem to be being married to a former politician. We can’t discuss capability if none has been made known. We could talk about her signing which I have not personally been exposed to.

So my question is how is this a valid marriage between Callista and Newt Gingrich. I understand that he converted, but is this her first marriage ? And if it is not, does this take her out of Communion with the Church ?
