We had a Muslim man stay with us for a few weeks this summer. He was training with my husband in his business. He is from Syria. I received a message from him that he wants to marry my 18 year old daughter. I really like this man. He is a wonderful person and I have a great respect for him. He is a member of my family already. He calls me “us Mom”. I don’t know what to do as far as a marriage. I would love him to be part of the family… but I don’t know what to do as far as Catholicism?

any thoughts?

^ Thats not really up to you, is it? Anyway if your daughter marries him, chances are she will become a muslim too. And if that guy becomes devout in his religion, he would become very different: he will demand the veil on his wife and if the wife becomes too assertive, islam allows domestic violence to return her to submission.

As a catholic you should be making diciples of all nations, rather than undicipling your own daughter.

Is your faith a cultural heritage or your absolute conviction about the nature of the world?

You know the man, but do you know the culture? Women have a status barely higher than possessions in Islamic culture. If grandkids come, his culture and family will DEMAND that those kids be muslim. How will that feel?

Are you aware that if he someday had a fight with your daughter and took the kids off the Syria that your daughter would have NO legal recourse whatsover to see her kids ever again, much less get them back?

Frankly, the only way I see this turning out well is if he is not very serious about his Islamic faith. And there is no guarantee that will always stay that way.

I’m not saying no way. But consider and pray hard.

Islam does not allow domestic violence.

Sorry. I won’t give religious advice to this lady as I’m not Catholic and it isn’t my place to do so, but I can’t keep silent while people spread lies about my faith.

Well, what does your daughter think of it? Eighteen, in this society, is usually a bit young for marriage.

I personally could never marry a Muslim. The Department of Defense actually put out a bulletin a few years warning American women about marrying Middle Eastern Muslims and going back to their home countries - the situation in Not Without My Daughter is actually fairly common, since in most Islamic nations the father is the one with sole rights over his children.

Also, if your daughter is a serious Catholic and he is an even moderately serious Muslim, there will most likely be trouble over how to raise their children, about her role in the family, and all other kinds of things. Can’t recommend it. I wouldn’t recommend even telling your daughter about this.

The thing that concerns me than his religion is his citizenship from Syria. If he changed post mariage and things went south it wouldn’t be the first time a Muslim husband from the M.E. took the kids to his home country with no recourse for the mother.

Your daughter can find herself abused by anyone, I don’t think domestic violence is inherit to Islam.

Anyway shouldn’t your daughter be the one making this decision? Plus your daughter is only 18 and you only knew this guy for a few weeks. This all seems kind of rushed and weird to me to be honest.

I don’t care one way or the other but I’ve read the Qu’ran and it clearly states you can first reprimand your wife verbally, then withold sleeping (sex) together (like my wife would care LOL), then if that doesn’t work, beat them “just a little”.

It’s not right to inaccurately portray the religion here, you are allowed to smack the old lady around according to the Qu’ran.

I would NOT encourage my daughter to marry a Muslim.

That’s my thoughts. However, IF my daughter were older, she started a relationship with a Muslim, it would be out of my control, again not encouraging it.

Your daughter is only 18! How old is this man? Have you told you daughter?

I am sorry, but my jaw is dropping right now…

Baloney! Your faith allows you to lie to us! In the "Four Stages of Islamic Treachery it states:

**FACT #5: **
As a rule of thumb to get the truth from any Islamist, simply reverse what they say to a non-Muslim.

I am curious how or why you would ever consider making a marriage decision for your daughter. If you raised her in a Catholic home on strong faith principals, teachings and morals, then she will be able to decide who and when she will marry. She may want your approval after she decides to marry and she may want your advise about a boyfriend. She has to live with her choice for the rest of her life and that is not your decision to make.

As a Catholic godparent and aunt, I encourage my nieces to seek Christian men with similar beliefs and family values. I would not attend a wedding ceremony if they marry outside Christianity, let alone the Catholic Church after being raised Catholic. (Nor would my mother-in-law as the grandmother).

If the Muslim agrees to raise the children as Catholics. Personally though, I prefer if you daughter marries a Catholic man. Not a Muslim.

If the Muslim agrees to raise the children as Catholics. I think that would be ok.
If he becomes a devoted muslim, that promise would become worthless. no way he could stand raising his own kids as infidel idolaters! 😃

I do think that** if **she does marry the Muslim, they may end up divorce because if she is a devout Catholic and he a devout Muslim. It would just divide the family.

Divorce you know is a serious sin in the Catholic Church.

why are you deciding for her? Have you discussed this with her at all? You may find her appalled at the suggestion since typically citizens of the US tend to find their own mates - but maybe you know that she favors him already romantically?

My prob with the this is not because he’s a muslim. The differences in religion can be worked out - it would be just the same as if people speaking different languages/from different culture getting together.

I would have probs with any guy wanting to get wed to someone after seeing visiting the family for a few weeks. A few weeks is not long enough to really get to know someone and work out whether they are compatible. But it is long enough to marry someone for their passport!!

The 2nd thing is that u have decided that the guy is suitable - and after such a short time period. don’t ur daughter get a say in this at all?

3rdly, ur daughter is too young to be ‘married off’ to a stranger. Hell, if I thought about getting wed to a girl I’ve only known for a couple of weeks - my mom would throw a fit.

U should put ur daughter’s needs first - and ignore everything else, including how nice this guy is.
