Can a 'traditional' Catholic prefer the OF?

I have to admit I don’t follow the 3 hour fast but I would have no problem if the Church made it mandatory again. Or at the very least hold the 1 hour fast to the time of the Mass not to the time communion is distributed, which is now essentially no fast at all.

I would have no problem with the 1 hour fast being tied to the beginning of Mass rather than communion. However, I can see that it would be very difficult for parents who are trying to get their kids fed before they leave the house in the morning.

The three hour one would make it awfully hard for me to get my morning coffee so I would likely be attending the Sat Vigil Mass if that were to return! :eek: Just kidding, but I would miss my coffee on Sunday mornings…

I usually also fast from midnight before since we go to the 9:00 a.m Mass… when we can’t make it to the first Mass, I try to do a longish (3 hourish) fast and if that doesn’t work out, I do the 1 hr before MASS, not before distribution. I had no idea there 3 hour fast but still kind of did it… who woulda thunk it?

PS: since we fast until the Mass is over, as soon as it’s over we drive like maniacs to McDonald’s drive through and grab a coffee. They sure have improved their coffee since a few years ago… or maybe I’m so desperate that even mud would taste good.

Oh yeah, before Vatican II there was a 15-minute fast AFTER communion as well. Therefore no need of drive-thru’s. 😃

Yes, without a doubt.

Traditional Catholicism is about much more than a liturgy.
 
Fasting from food from midnight to the next morning is really no big deal…I sometimes fast from all food for 24 hours, as a health detox measure.

They wear a t-shirt while they go swimming so their brown scapular doesen’t float away. They’re willing to drive an hour to go to Mass… every Sunday. They know the confession times of at least 4 churches. They invite priests over to play cards and smoke cigars. They pray to saints that you think may not really exist. They ask you to finish the sentence when you say “John Paul the Great”… the great what? They might own a live chicken. When they’re at a Novus Ordo Mass, everyone watches them to figure out why they’re hitting themselves during the “Lamb of God”. They’re kneel after Mass to pray… and miss out on the fun gladhanding with Father by the parish gift shop. They scoff when they pass the Masonic Lodge. They cross themselves when they pass a Catholic church. They mutter something about the “poor souls” when they pass a cemetary. They mutter something about St. Michael when an ambulance passes them. Their girls’ first names are Mary. Their boys’ middle names are Mary. Cappa Magna doesn’t sound like a drink at Starbucks to them. They’ll tell you at length why being “charitable” isn’t always being nice and friendly.

It’s complicated. Trads are not easily defined. You just kind of know them when you see them.

Hmmm. I wonder if there is a significant blood change when fasting 24 hours instead of 12. which they sometimes require for bloodwork.

Which is why I’d never aspire to the label “traditional.” I 'd hate it if people thought I was this arrogant.

I think there is. I remember being advised not to have fasted for more than a certain amount of time when getting bloodwork done (there a minimum and maximum number of hours). I remember one time being turned away for fasting for more than 12 hours (there was a time in my life I never ate breakfast, for one thing I never got up early enough to have it :D)

Technically no. Its called the Divine Liturgy. I do sometimes post about it in the L&S section. Actually, come drop by the Eastern Forum, you’ll see that a majority of the topics there are hardly about the Liturgy and the Sacramental Rites of the East. Mostly its about Eastern theology. I’d love for it to be discussed more in the L&S forum but just recently someone shooed me away in the L&S forum claiming it was a Roman Catholic forum and not an Eastern Catholic one (not a moderator to be clear, just another member like us). 🤷

The funny thing was all these time being always the most devout among all my circle of friends, I’m always seen as the traditional one. That is until I came to meet the “traditionalists” online who claimed I am a liberalist and a Latin hater.

Apparently some people have been banned. If that is not censorship, I don’t know what is. And it is not like outlandish claims are being thrown around on this forum. Control is perhaps subtle but it is still control. And it happens to be aimed at those who support the EF.

There you go. I’ve been waiting for a comment of this sort. 😃 I’m surprised offensive stuff did not come up earlier in the thread. But it always happens. You should be embarrased for being so judgemental towards your fellow Catholics. What exactly is offensive to you in that humorous but quite true description?

My parish has about half of that.

Organ only, excellent, orthodox homilies, cassocks, surplices, incense, chant for Agnus Dei and Kyrie (not for the others). Ad orientem sometimes.

If it had all of those . . . Oh boy.
