Can catholics be masons?

I would say “no” based on the following:

The 1917 Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church declared, “Persons joining associations of the Masonic sect or any others of the same kind which plot against the Church and legitimate civil authorities contract ipso facto excommunication simply reserved to the Apostolic See.”
The more recent 1983 Code, Canon 1374, reads, "A person who joins an association which plots against the Church is to be punished with a just penalty; one who promotes or takes office in such an association is to be punished with an interdict."

First of all, why are you interested in joining the Masons? You can read up all about them on the Internet and judge for yourself what is the right thing to do.

The Church teaches that you cannot join the Masons, unfortunately, there are many people in the Church today, who are either unaware or deliberately lead others astray.

Masons are known for their secrecy and strange ceremonies. Allegiance to freemasonry would signify enmity with Christ. Therefore, you need to decide whether you want to be with the Author of Life who died so that you will live, or with a group of people who would deny Christ and lead your eternal soul to hell.

This Sacred Congregation is in a position to reply that this circumstance is due to an editorial criterion which was followed also in the case of other associations likewise unmentioned inasmuch as they are contained in wider categories.

Therefore the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic associations remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.

Mankind’s Hidden Enemy

In his encyclical letter on Freemasonry, Humanum genus (1884)
Pope Leo XIII equated Freemasonry with the Kingdom of Satan, using St. Augustine’s image of the two cities, the City of Man and the City of God, and the everlasting struggle between the two.

At every period of time in history, including the present there has been and “is” conflict between Man and God; with a multiplicity of weapons of every description, although not always with equal order and assault. Presently at present earth history in the making whether it be within the Catholic Church herself or the degree of overall morality in society around the entire world. I think most God fearing people would conclude that the partisans of evil seem to be combining together and are struggling with united vehemence, led on or assisted by, that strongly organized and widespread association called the Freemasons. They are no longer making any secret of their purposes. They are boldly rising up against God Himself. They are planning and have undoubtedly infiltrated the very hierarchy of the Catholic Church at some of it’s highest levels. Publicly and openly with the set purpose of utterly despoiling the nations of Christendom. And if it were possible…trying to obtain the blessings obtained for us through Jesus Christ. We devout Catholics with Blessed Jesus, His Holy Virgin Mother Mary and God’s immense army of Angels are fighting the greatest War humanity has and will ever witness.

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Despite what people have said about the Masons being anti-christian, my research has shown me that they actually highly suggest you have a very strong personal religion. Just because they have strange and secret ceremonies does not automatically mean they are against Christianity. It’s nothing more than boy scouts for adults 😛

That is totally wrong.

Its like saying drug cartels are good because they give money to the poor!! They are evil and manipulate people.
 
I used to be a member of the Kof C for some 20 years but finally left after they just would never take a stand on anything that was not PC…it was just a mens club…a few bucks for the ‘poor’ then lets have some drinks,order a pizza and that was it…As to the Masons…I work and lecture at a historical site and the local masons come and pay their respects to a great military war hero who was also a mason…they have liked my talks so much I have been invited to speak at one of their meetings…they know I am an orthodox Catholic but dont feel threatened by me and if any blood froim their human or animal sacrifice spills onto me I will sprinkle some holy water on it…seriously…the masons have been attacked for years…while its the military-industrial complex in America that has gotten us involved into no-win wars…why already there are some 50,000 US troops in Afghanistan…they are the ones to be feared with the blood money (had to work that in) gotten from these battles…anyway just my opinion…Nino

And are you basing this off personal experience (that is, actually attending a meeting in a legitimate lodge), or just off of what you’re told.

Like drug cartels the Freemasons are an evil group pretending to be nice guys. Neither are good.
 
Catholics cannot be Masons, nor can ANY Christian. In fact, most of the mainline faith communities prohibit membership in the Masons as well, except for Anglicans but they allow openly gay bishops, so there you go.

Masonry is a “naturalist religion.” Regardless of the fact that in America the Masons did little planning against the Church they profess a belief in an unknown Great Architect and their ritual requires an admission that one is coming in from darkness to light by receiving the Craft (masonry). But this is a lie! We have the light Christ and to say we are in darkness is blasphemy. Additionally, their ritual requires a blasphemous use of the Bible to make a frivolous oath.

We can no more be Mason and Catholic than Muslim and Catholic or Hindu and Catholic.

Might I suggest American Freemasonry and Christianity by Whelan. It is a very good exploration of these issues.

I for one am a mason and a catholic. For all of you who posted negative remarks regarding the masons, you should do some research before posting your comments. Masonry dates way back since King Solomon era. Every time we open a lodge we bow our heads and say a prayer. We have an open bible in the middle of the room. I don’t see why this is against the catholic religion. Please do your research.
