Can catholics be masons?

I swear that the following is true.

For years I drove my family past a Scottish Rite Cathedral for the Masons.

Towering above the Cathedral was a huge windowless brick tower. I thought, “What is that for?”

Then, I was invited to a social affair being held at the Cathedral. When I arrived, they had a Mason greeter there. I asked some questions about the Cathedral’s ornate symbolic architecture. He thought that I was interested in being a Mason, assumed that I was non-Catholic, and began showing me around.

When we got to the business of the windowless brick tower, he said, “Oh, that’s where we store our scenic backdrops for our skirts.”

“Your skits?”

“Yes. All of our new Masons have to participate in skits dramatizing what we teach them about the hisdtory of our group – how we started as the Templars, but then the Catholic pope took all of our assets and our homes and left us homeless. And how we have recovered from those terrible days.”

He then took me to the closet where they stored Templar outfits, swords and shields for their skits.

So, they have grown men up on stage putting on skits with costumes and tin swords and shields intent on showing how disgusting the Catholic Church was (and, to the extent that it is the same Church and they still hate it, how disgusting it is).

I just posted this link on another thread; if you are looking for the truth from Church teaching, this is a good summary. On the other hand, it seems at CAF discussions, some people won’t accept what the Church teaches, no matter what is quoted. This article is worth reading. We accept the authority of the Church, or we don’t. God bless.

sphilomena,

Thank you for your post.

I read the article at the web address provided in your post. Most of what I read I would categorize as untrue.

Admittedly I do not know much about St. Maximilian Kolbe. I find it hard to believe that any group of Freemasons perform such activities via as Freemasons. I do not doubt that there are Freemasons that do not agree with the Church, but I seriously doubt such a protest would come from or be organized as part of a lodge. Freemasons do not discuss politics or religion in a lodge.

There are other organizations that call themselves Freemasons but are not recognized as other Freemasons as such. The P2 lodge in Rome comes to mind. However, Freemasonry being blamed for the acts of a rogue, unrecognized lodge is like blaming the Roman Catholic Church for something the Anglican did.

Furthermore, judging the whole organization of Freemasonry for the acts of a few is not right. “No one man speaks for all of masonry.” Such judgment of masonry is the equivalent of judging all of the Roman Catholic Church for the misdeeds of a few bad priest.

If you overlook his scare-tactics, Pope Leo was truthful in his description of many items associated with masonry… Democracy, Liberty, Freedom, Civil Rights, and public education to name a few.

Thank you again for your post.

Hi , I was wondering if you ever contacted the Vatican to get an answer that would be acceptable regarding the morality of masonic membership?

It is not acceptable- that has been the response from the Magisterium.

A Catholic man not be such.

Sorry, I wasn’t asking for my own knowledge, rather, after coming across an old thread wondered if DallasTexas ever contacted the Vatican regarding his stance…
