Can God Fly?

I know God can do all things that don’t imply a logical contradiction, but can God fly? At first, one would probably think, “Why, of course he can! There isn’t anything contradictory about God flying.” But is there? How would God be able to move from one location in the air to another if he is already present everywhere? I might just be being stupid here, but help would be very much appreciated.

The Trinity is immaterial which does not fly, although Jesus Christ assumed a human body and now has a glorified ascended human body.

That’s what I was thinking, but doesn’t that make God’s omnipotence seem a lot less impressive, that he can’t do something so seemingly simple? Like, because we are material, we can bend over while God can’t? Please forgive me if I sound irreverent, I’m not trying to, and I know God is infinitely above me.

Creatures are limited by the laws of creation.

I think I understand now. The reason God can’t do it but we can is because one would need to be limited by the laws of creation. If God were limited in anyway, He wouldn’t be God. Rather than Him being powerless to fly or bend over, He’s much too powerful to do such things. Thank you for your insight. 🙂

Flight is a form of movement and movement is a form of change. It is also a testament to our limits as we cannot be in a place while we are in another. But God is both immutable and omnipresent. In him there is absolutely no change. Flight, therefore is a consequence of a limited existence. God therefore cannot fly.

This is to anthropomorphize God - reducing the infinite to the level of a humanly understandable finite. All attempts at reductionism pertaining to God must ultimately fail, as He is irreducible. He raises us up - we do not drag Him down, if you catch the drift.

God alone is able to surround and contain the infinite. Wrap your head around that!

To assume a human body is also a form of movement.

That is what confuses me also. At one point in time God did not have a human body, but later on He did.
Another thing about change is that when a person dies, let’s say he goes to Purgatory. Then his family on earth can offer indulgences, both partial and plenary in an effort to have God lessen his sentence in Purgatory. Also, Scripture says that God changed His mind and that He had movement, since He was heard walking around in the garden.

God is INFINITE.

How can an alleged created being … such as a human … or a bunny rabbit … or an earthworm … or a dung beetle … or a mosquito … or a tiny microscopic arachnid … even begin to contemplate INFINITY.

You could be deleted.

There was an episode of The Twilight Zone in which the writer’s wife was a woman with dark hair who was very aggressive … “spirited” … and while in his study he was visited by a soothing blonde. When the wife began banging on the door, he took out a piece of tape from a tape recorder and threw the tape into the fireplace, saying “sorry” … and the soothing blonde disappeared. After the wife left, the writer took out his tape recorder, described the soothing blonde and suddenly, she was back.

Back and forth … the blonde’s tape got recorded, then burned, then recorded, then burned.

Finally, one day, after a particularly dreadful chewing out by the dark haired wife, the writer said, “sorry” and removed from his desk drawer a piece of recording tape and threw it into the fire … and the dark haired wife … disappeared.

He then dictated into his recorder again and the soothing blonde reappeared.

What is it about INFINITY that you do not understand.

Mathematicians talk about infinity all the time. Infinite series, Infinite sequences, Sequences diverging to infinity, cardinality of infinite sets, the continuum hypothesis, Compare the infinity of the real numbers with the infinity of the natural numbers. Beth numbers such as Beth null, Beth one, Beth two and Beth omega. Etc.

Humorous.

One dimensional.

Explain to the INFINITE God … who has INFINITE dimensions … what He cannot do.

Right now, HE is laughing so hard, HE is crying.

Laughing and crying are also forms of movement.

One of my favorite biblical passages is The Prodigal Son.

Focus on the description of the Father.

Something I wrote the other day:

Prodigal Son.

Like the father of the prodigal son. Look up that parable. Very valuable and important lesson therein.

biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+15%3A11-32

The father was out there desperately waiting and hoping to catch sight of his younger sinful son.

20 “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him."

“‘My son,’ the father said [to the older faithful son], ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

everything I have is yours. 32

You also have to understand God’s INFINITY.

It is different from mathematical infinity.

Billions of people … can SHARE in God’s INFINITY.

Some of my friends INSIST that there is only so much good stuff to go around … and if you get something good, then there is less for them.

But that’s not the way it works.

ALWAYS … the sinner is ALWAYS welcomed back.

All prayers are welcomed at all times.

And the prayers don’t need to be elaborate.

No special format.

“God … please help me.”

God is laughing and God is crying? It is difficult to take you seriously. Anyway, laughing and crying are a form of movement which is not possible for an immutable Being.
