Can we learn from the Lutherans?

Another funny video from the Lutheran source on youtube. Is there a lesson to be learned here?

Not sure how much people learn but try to understand the faith message behind that videos.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Lutheran Satire is fantastic. They do a better job of defending orthodox Catholicism than orthodox Catholics do, with this video as a good example. They should just become Catholic already! 😛

This one continues to be my all-time favorite. From 1:50 it’s brilliant:

As my dad was Lutheran, I would imagine I learned some stuff from him. Like how to read.

There was one video that struck a chord with me. King Henry VIII, John Calvin and Huldrych Zwingli were singing “We’ll call you cannibals but then get mad when you won’t commune us”. I’m sure Catholics could sympathize with Lutherans who practise closed communion because I know some Catholics here have seen non-Catholics feel they should be allowed participate when even when they don’t believe in the Real Presence.
I won’t share it because it wasn’t friendly to the Pope at the end of the video.

Another great video from the Lutherans. I wonder how many of the examples given here actually take place in Catholic churches.

OKay, admittedly that is funny at points but perhaps a little over the top - I mean it’s a mix of a bit of religious humor with more secular or political humor too, which is fine but the two should not be overly identified as they are not necessarily the same thing.

That being said, some of the finest scholarship we have available about the papacy and any number of historic doctrinal issues has been produced by Protestant scholars, so I am very often actually learning from the Protestants. They also have any number of incidental research and reflection on and from the scripture - including again historical research - that is very enriching. Incredibly my belief in the historical institution of the papacy as being not too different from how we know it today even before the first ecumenical councils came about after reading (I think it was an Anglican) Protestant research on the topic, so I owe them a debt there for sure.

Why it’s done by “Lutheran Satire” is way beyond me. It describes about 1/3 of current mass attendees in some places. Are you certain that is a Luthetran source? Or is it LINO?

Am thinking of carrying an indulgence raffle ticket book with me. $50 a pop. I’ll be they’d ponder - if even for one second…

Not to mention many of the top Catholic scholars and authors who came from protestant backgrounds. Peter Kreeft, to mention one.

We can learn a lot from certain Lutherans. A couple:

Jaroslav Pelikan, who worked on a “Sacred Writings” project which covered the primary world religions. A Yale professor, Lutheran pastor and scholar, he did not convert to Catholicism, but took the easy (hard?) way out and was received into the Orthodox Church.

Dr. William Marshner, PhD, Lutheran theologian who went on a search and found…you guessed it. As it was with Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, he went deep into history and found no uniquely Protestant theology at all.

Everybody’ll probably flip out when I say this but: I’ve learned a lot about our Catholic Faith in apologetics with Protestants. I also learned to really appreciate and delve into Sacred Scripture. That’s one good thing from Lutheranism. The huge emphasis on Bible study. The only thing I agree with Luther on is that we need to be authentically contrite when we go to Confession. Beyond that: Anything he wrote horrifies me.

Huh, I guessed it was LutheranSatire just from the title and first post description, before I even watched the video.

At least the criticism of the Pope had some relevance in that video. What really rubbed me the wrong way was when, in a video about Jehovah’s Witnesses, there was a totally out of nowhere slam against the Catholic Church regarding sexual abuse for no reason.

I find LutheranSatire kinda hit and miss. Some of their stuff I don’t think is very good, especially the critiques of Catholicism (granted, that might be because of my bias…) but some is pretty great, like this one:

Actually, it is good to play defense on a regular basis. Apologetics is defense, it is evangelization - it is a many-faceted endeavor.

It is interesting to note that many of the best apologists on the Catholic side are former protestants. Any many protestant theologians and authors, like Pelikan, do such a great job of communicating what Christianity stands for.
