Can we really trust what the media say about the coronavirus?

I’m not going to join in on the politically correct virtue signalling piling on against the member who started this thread. I’ll just say that if we can trust the media reports Sweden might have a lot worse problems in the coming weeks than certain people looking to blame certain groups.

Reading Russian news about so low corona cases, every one starts to think that corona epidemy is Western propaganda fodder.
I work with people who emigrated from Russia and they are just shaking their heads at Russia’s reporting on this. They don’t believe it for one minute and neither do I.
They think it is highly likely Russia is not doing much testing for the virus, which would make their numbers low.

I’ll allow for different opinions on it, but I don’t think you’re going to change the minds of the people I know. If Russia is doing something now it’s likely that it’s because the situation is already veering out of control.

In my province most of the cases are related to one person who flew home for her father’s funeral. Over 100 cases stem from that contact at the funeral home on two different occasions.

What is your take on the pandemic? I’m assuming the ‘stay at home’ is valid?

I have a friend who is a virologist and she really doesn’t want to get Covid. That said, she feels its safe to go out and get groceries without being really fearful, just so long as you wash things down when you get home because you don’t know if the stock boy was positive.
Oh, definitely the stay-at-home is valid. In fact, i wish we had something like this during flu season, because so many people contract the flu and there are so many deaths. But instead, we cram into sporting events, theaters, churches, schools, and stores in the middle of winter and expose ourselves at close range to others who are carrying the flu viruses.

Oh, well, that isn’t likely to happen.

I do NOT want to get COVID. No one does. My older daughter lives in Queens, the “epicenter” of the pandemic here in the U.S., and my younger daughter just told me she is the only PT who is willing to do therapy on patients in the COVID unit at the hospital where she works.

So I have many prayers going up for both of my daughters!

Also check in with your own county and state websites.
Yes, definitely! Good point!

For one thing, they are giving out information about local needs–funds set up to help local small businesses, food drives to help those who have no money for food, various websites set up to help people keep their children occupied at home. For those of us who are Christians, these pieces of information give us more to bring to Our Lord and Our Lady in prayer.

Also, they are giving out information about who to call if you are scared and alone, or phone numbers to call for information about getting a special license to return to work if you are a retired health care worker, etc.

And one thing that’s really kind of encouraging is the different ways that neighborhoods are using to communicate mutual support–one neighborhood is doing hearts in their windows. Last night, I saw one neighborhood in our city where all the backyard decks/patios were strung with lights–really cheerful!

Well one thing is for sure I don’t believe anything coming out of China. We just learned that a single mortuary in Wuhan reportedly ordered more urns in two days than reported total deaths in the whole country. We also learned that they were pushing that the virus originated in the infamous Seafood wet market but eventually in February had to fess up in that the first cases of coronavirus had no contact with that infamous market. I’d be interested in seeing were the first cases may have had any connections and can be traced. Inquiring minds want to know. The Chinese Communist regime has been very cloak and dagger by hiding evidence, refusing to admit American scientists from the Centers of Disease Control, disappearing doctors and researchers, and expelling American journalists who might sneak the truth out to the rest of the world.

Right now, though, it’s tough to find reliable information. Politics, not science, infects? most media commentary, and that applies not just to what’s being said but what is not said.

I’ve found CNN, MSNBC and other outlets so loaded with misinformation that one might as well be listening to the Chinese Communist Party. Jason Chaffetz said it best yesterday, Dr. Birx and Dr. Fauci are not political people.” “They worked in the administration when it was the Obama administration. These are serious scientists who have the lead; there’s a reason why the President, time after time, brings them out and for the American people not to see these health care professionals giving advice, telling them what needs to be done, advising the President, does a total disservice to the American public. But I think the American public, fortunately, figures that out.”

The WHO has also made some serious mistakes and put out some very inaccurate information too, which is and should be alarming.

I think travelling, not immigration, is behind the spread of coronavirus.
All modes of travel, especially airpanes, cruise lines, automobiles crossing countries and oceans.

I can believe it, it’s highly contagious. It seems a pity that everyone knows it’s her, though… she may not have had symptoms straight away and probably thought she had a flu bug when they did present, as she’d likely be feeling pretty run-down with being bereaved.

Korea has been singularly effective in “flattening the curve” of Corona infections. Here is an interview with Professor Kim Woo-joo from the Korea University Guro Hospital. He has been on the front line fighting infectious diseases for 30 years. Sub-titled in English and I think French. I find it extremely informative and enlightening.

Yet another reason to at least check out your local media–OUR local news, and I’m guessing yours too, is putting out the call for blood donation. There are still plenty of people who require blood, and apparently the supplies are lower than they’ve ever been. Unless you are sick or have some other reason why you can’t give (e.g., high blood pressure not responding to treatment), you are fine to give blood!

You might not know this if you are ignoring your local media (tv, radio, newspapers).

It’s horrible! There are people on social media calling for her execution, and it’s become worse since yesterday when we had our first covid-19 death and it was revealed he had been one of her contacts.

Korea tracked the actual carriers, something that the US would have a hard time doing given our laws and culture.
I personally think tracking actual carriers would make a lot more sense than making every single person stay in the house until June (as Virginia is now doing) but someone would surely complain about being tracked, here in the US.

Who is the “her” you are referring to? I heard a man came from China with him when he returned to Washington. And hecwas patient zero here in the U.S.

If anything the numbers the media are reporting are lower than the actual numbers. Which means that even more people are dying than is being reported.
