Can you talk me out of becoming a Catholic?

Do you believe that a piece of unleavened bread is supernaturally turned into the flesh, blood, soul and divinity of the son of the creator of the entire universe?

If yes, would you be able to look a non-Catholic friend in the eye, without embarrassment and tell them that you sincerely believe that in the Host, you are consuming is the very flesh of Jesus Christ?

Do you know that there are 7 books in the Catholic versions that have been removed from the Protestant Bible? Read a Catholic version and you’ll get the entire Bible. The Catholic Church has the Truth in its entirety. After all, the Bible is the Inspired Word of God so why not have the entire version and not just parts and pieces?

My answer to you: Yes, yes, yes, and I believe the Protestant answer is that they believe the seven removed disagree with the 66 that remain, and so must not be inspired.

True that, Zat! IF I believe that, I’d have no reason to be a Protestant, LDS, Pagan, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, or other. The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist is what sets Catholicism apart from these. That is actually the reason I’ve considered becoming Catholic. In a discussion thread like this I asked tough questions about the Eucharist. I had a Protestant response for every Catholic proof, except this:

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.”

(John 6:53-55)

I suppose if one were to talk me out of becoming a Catholic, such a one would have to either convince me that Jesus never said these words, or demonstrate that Jesus meant something other than what His words plainly seem to say to me.

When we give our tours of our Church here in Utah we let them know that this is a central beleif while standing outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Then we go in with them and are silent for a moment or two. We have has some come to the RCIA because of this one honest encounter. If you go here:

It might help to read www.catholicfacts.org regarding the missing 7 books. It’s very interesting and just might answer a few questions. I know it certainly helped me to understand a bit.

Oh, of course. Undoubtedly…I will never deny that I know*** very*** little…that why I search. There’s got to be an answer out there somewhere.
Besides…I have a terrible problem retaining information, so, I probably know next to nothing…

but.

I still keep coming back to this. There is nothing. We are a small speck in the infinite cosmos. That’s all.

I SO want to be wrong…but…it all points to that…

But, I hold out hope that I am wrong. I do get a sense that our soul survives, and comes back here (to earth…I think we are reincarnated)…so, perhaps, there is a master plan and a creative force…who knows?

Why are you still not a Catholic? Do you know that Catholic Church is the only Church built by Jesus with one Head ie St Peter who was given the keys.

Catholic church is the only church which is united in its preaching to the furthrust corners of the world. you go to any church and see what happens there. And then go to the Catholic church to the furtherst corner of the world andd you will find the same except for teh language.

we pray in one unision.

You can show up to an Inquiry RCIA group unannounced; you would not show up unannounced to an RCIA Catechism class, or retreat, or Mystagogia group. Inquiry is the first step, and is where you learn about the practical steps, and get your paperwork looked after.

Since you are already a Catholic, there wouldn’t be any paperwork to deal with, unless there is some kind of issue with regard to your marriage - the facilitator of the Inquiry group would know how to identify and deal with any such issue. (The only thing that springs to mind is that at an appropriate time, you would probably want to have your marriage blessed in the Church, since it’s likely that it took place outside of Church walls while you were still technically under the authority of the Church. This is mostly quite painless - a priest would walk you and your wife through the details.)

True, Phoenix. It all points to that for you. But consider this IT of which you speak: Is IT a reliable source on which to base your decision? Let’s think about IT for a moment: IT is the truth you know. But you admit that IT is less than one tenth of one percent of all the truth there is to know. So how can you base a decision on IT when 99.9% of all the truth there is to know you know nothing about?

Now, you might be much smarter than I, and I might know only one one thousandth of one percent of all the truth the world has to offer. Yet, what makes me different is not that know more than you, for there might be 99.999% of the whole truth that I know nothing about. No, what makes me different is my IT. The truth with which I’ve been blessed convinces me that God actually is there and that He really cares.

So let’s consider your IT and my IT. Let’s compare ITs, so to speak, and see why yours leads to your conclusion and mine leads to mine. Maybe some of my IT will change your IT forever and for good. Then again, maybe some of your IT will convert my IT to seeing things your way. But I’m willing to take that chance, so long as my IT, which is the truth I know, gets more of the OTHER, which is the truth of which I’m completely ignorant. Are you willing to take the same chance, too?

It seems as if you’re bing convinced by the arguement of size…that since humans are only a small part of the universe, they must not be that important.

This, of course, is incorrect, and can be disproven fairly simply. Consider a virus, which is so small that it cannot be seen. A certain strain of virus can, theoretically of course, end the human race-and yet we cannot see it! So obviously things, even if they are small, can be very important. The arguement of size looks impressive, but doesn’t actually prove anything.

The truth is, I know little, for I’ve been away from the Church much longer than I’ve been with Her. Wouldn’t RCIA Catechism class be required in my case?

In answer to your question, I’d say that I’ve lived so long in the Fundamentalist and Evangelical worlds that I can see the truth through their eyes. I’ve spent enough time in discussion forums like this that I can see the truth through a Catholic’s eyes, too. Please let me demonstrate what I mean. Take the passage to which you alluded, where our Lord and Savior says:

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

(Matthew 16:18-19)

Please tell me, who or what is the rock of whom or of which Jesus speaks?

In answer to the TITLE of your post which is “Can you talk me out of becoming Catholic?”

my answer is “I wouldn’t dream of it. I love you too much.” 🙂
