As I am relatively new here for now I will take you at your word. However, as a rule I do not lend very much credence to the use of smilies. Far too often I’ve seen them used to mask one’s intended, uncharitable remarks with a “just kidding” slapped on to the end in order to avoid action from the mods. Frankly the tenor of your posts in this thread and your ever-present support of “all things netmil(name removed by moderator)” tainted my reception of your humor.

I have seen this done too…but I unlike others do not sugar coat things for the Mod’s sake…I say it like it is…and if it is a joke a smilie:D from me indicates that!

Just to set the record straight… I support all things that make a mass reverent anything that detracts from that I have no use for…also I to like netmil(name removed by moderator) and some others attend a NO mass…just in case there was any confusion.

Your jokes are at times not very funny and are usually at the expense of others, “your telling it like is” is fine but when you add in the catty jesters and the tee hee with buddies who agree with you, it leaves a bad taste.

I don’t buy the smilies at times Karin, I’m sorry. Prove me wrong 😉

Oh now this is funny, I seem to remember the last time I did that was as a joke to bring some levity and you laughed.

I think you will find that the people that you are “bashing”( for a lack of a better word)…are friendly folks also:) …but I guess neither group wants to see that:( (that both groups are friendly)

There is nothing wrong with the laity singing…but it just feels like an ‘interruption’ of the Mass when a cantor goes up to the microphone and sings.

Well…then again my idea of perfect laity participation is just showing up and reading from a Missal.

So im a bit biased as well. 😦

Regarding the “usually vain” comment, I would point you to the wise words of Napolean Bonapart: “Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.” As many cantors are volunteers who can simply carry a tune, we must not assume they’ve been properly trained either in canting nor in how to use a microphone.
It is much easier to cover over everyt deficiency with a cantor than to cultivate a choir/congregational singing tradition such as mainstream protestant demoninations usually have.

“Easier” can also be translated as “affordable” or even “feasible”.
But the “tradition” of one person blasting his voice into a microphone singing an unsingable hymn that shouldn’t be there in the first place to cover up the rumbling noisees of a congregation that is basically not singing in the first place is not one of Catholic worship’s greatest moments.

Now, here we have another point worth exploring: the unsingable hymns. This is why all parishes would benefit from a decently trained cantor and/or music minister. People can’t participate in the sung prayer if they cannot easily find the melody. As far as the “rumbling” and the congregation not singing…well that sounds like a cry for more and BETTER music ministry for the folks in the pews. The fault could lie in many places; it depends upon the individual parish circumstances.

Miss Karin,

You would have an extremely difficult time convincing a casual observer such as myself of this, for the posts stand for themselves as evidence, as do the people who initiate them… Surely you aren’t wanting me to produce them, are you?
