We have an official release from the totality of the synod vs. the release of one member of that synod.

It is jumping to conclusions to doubt the release of an entire synod as agenda driven.
Card Napier, from Vatican Insider:

“He (Card Napier) said he suspected that those leading the Synod are not committed to expressing the opinions of the entire Synod but only those of a specific group.”

How is he showing discord by asking the Pope to defend Catholic teaching?
You mean, in accord with Burke’s personal opinion? And not listen to the (name removed by moderator)ut from others? Writing a book and scheduling multiple interviews with the media, is not sowing discord?

Card Kasper wrote a book, and scheduled multiple interviews with the media. Was he sowing discord?

Let’s not put all the eggs in one basket. I believe there are 191 other members besides Napier. Surely they have opinions, also, and I’ll bet not all agree with him. They show much more wisdom in being discreet and avoiding the sensationalism of the media.

This is exactly why I said a couple of months ago, I had hopes that the synod would remain behind closed doors. Now, it appears, that priests and bishops are saying some who not properly disposed according to current church law, are approaching them about receiving communion. 🤷

And we have yet another year of speculation and misinformation to contend with. The Catholic press will be hot this whole time, I’m certain.

Card Burke’s book (if you ordered it) is being released the first week of Nov. In the meantime, we can all read and fortify ourselves with the truth of the gospel.
Hi TIGG:)

Thank you for your post.

God bless you:)

I don’t think he is sowing discord. He is publicly stating that there is politics afoot and that there are faithful Bishops countering the forces trying to liberalize the rules. I think that is extremely useful.
I agree. The document should have been approved by all Bishops before being released. It caused scandal and confusion, more for the secular media to use to try to change the Church to how they think it should be.

Greetings… First it is best that we all realize that this first stage synod is only that! It is the beginning of discussion that was long overdue in the Church. The real implementation of any changes will not take place until the return Synod in 2016. Sending love and light…Budeux
Well said, Budeux. From the very first night we glimpsed this remarkable man emerge onto that balcony, then hearing that he had chosen to be called Pope Francis and experiencing that extraordinarily humble outreach for all of our prayers, surely we must have all sensed that that the Holy Spirit had sent us an instrument of renewal, reform, and purification which the church so desperately needs.

Pope Francis is like a strong wind that brings with it forces that can shake the senses and even inspire trepidation. However, if fear can be surmounted, the aftermath could very well be a new season of great hope for the Catholic Church, and the entire world.

Let us be patient and allow the events of this particular time in church history to unfold as God intends. We must all pray and trust the movements of the Holy Spirit.

I don’t like how the Cardinal is sowing discord here. The Cardinals and Bishops need to be presenting themselves as a unified body. In addition, it almost sounds like Burke has a personal problem with some of his brothers.
Pope Francis sowed even bigger discord as Cardinal when he publicly criticized Pope Benedict over the Regensburg speech that he gave about Islam.

Megan 7… the book you to refer to as Cardinal Burkes, is a compilation of old material by not just him, but others as well. Its nothing new! These cardinals are just putting up roadblocks, in hope of keeping the status quo on pastoral response to people in need within the Church. These cardinals need to be with the people…not hide behind the Curia and wield distruptive barbs at Pope Francis!

Thank you Mr. Robert Bay:thumbsup: You are doing a great job, considering this forum is on fire since the Synod began (I mean very active;)) Thank you for your efforts & keeping everything civil.

God bless!

Megan,

Cardinal Burke is the true disciple of Jesus. We need more cardinals like him who has moral courage and is faithful to the Church’s teaching. It is time to clarify the doctrine. Making things ambiguous is dangerous. Cardinal Burke’s request is very reasonable. I fully expect the Pope to respond.

I agree with all of this, except I don’t think the Pope will respond.

God bless Card Burke.

"The Augustinian Robert Dodaro, the editor of the book, is head of the patristic institute “Augustinianum” in Roma. The Jesuit Paul Mankowski is a professor at the Lumen Christi Institute in Chicago. Professor John M. Rist teaches ancient history and philosophy at the University of Toronto and at the Catholic University of America in Washington.

Here is the blurb:

In this volume five Cardinals of the Church, and four other scholars, respond to the call issued by Cardinal Walter Kasper for the Church to harmonize “fidelity and mercy in its pastoral practice with civilly remarried, divorced people”.

Beginning with a concise introduction, the first part of the book is dedicated to the primary biblical texts pertaining to divorce and remarriage, and the second part is an examination of the teaching and practice prevalent in the early Church. In neither of these cases, biblical or patristic, do these scholars find support for the kind of “toleration” of civil marriages following divorce advocated by Cardinal Kasper.

The various studies in this book lead to the conclusion that the Church’s longstanding fidelity to the truth of marriage constitutes the irrevocable foundation of its merciful and loving response to the individual who is civilly divorced and remarried.

“Because it is the task of the apostolic ministry to ensure that the Church remains in the truth of Christ and to lead her ever more deeply into that truth, pastors must promote the sense of faith in all the faithful, examine and authoritatively judge the genuineness of its expressions and educate the faithful in an ever more mature evangelical discernment.”
  • St. John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio
“I suspect the book will follow the reasoning of our Pope Emeritus.
20 years ago the document below was a response to liberal German bishops who publicly stated that divorced and remarried Catholics could follow their consciences in deciding whether to take Communion.”

"I’m a monk of the Orthodox Church converting to Catholicism. I have decided to do this on many grounds, pretty much all of them dogmatic. But though my realization of the Truth of Catholic dogmatic theology was a gradually increasing thing, there were two things from the get-go, that made me realize Catholicism’s doctrinal witness had to be taken seriously.

Having read the Fathers on how to discern a vocation either to married or religious life, it was clear that the Fathers had a very definite understanding of marriage and sexuality; this specific understanding led them to recommend the celibate life to all who could embrace it, and to insist that if a Christian did want to keep one foot in the world, his or her sexuality was to be exclusively reserved for marriage, marriage itself being directed to a particular end: the raising of godly offspring in a committed unit that formed the basis of society and mirrored the indissoluble bond between Christ and the Church. In the whole context of their views on marriage and sex, two things were inescapable: first, contraception is incomprehensible for the Christian marriage, since they tended to view marriage itself as a good, albeit as still a sub-optimal concession to worldly desires that was only justifiable on the grounds of producing children and raising them in the Faith; second, marriage is necessarily permanent so long as both spouses live, both because of its duties and obligations under natural law, and also because of its sacramental character. This is a matter of doctrine, not mere practice, and this should give many Orthodox pause, as it gave me: I reckoned to myself,
“If Catholicism is false and Orthodoxy is true, why is it that Catholicism still teaches the truth about marriage and contraception, while we have abandoned it?”

My question: WHY are they discussing settled matters AT ALL? Is our faith something to be reviewed every 50 years or so? This is completely unnecessary.

With respect, I am beginning to completely despair with this papacy of Pope Francis and deeply regret the day when Pope Benedict decidd to reseign. Pope Francis reminds me of Pope Honorius I. He did not teach heresy but his failure to speak the truth clearly to avod causing offence caused heresy to spread through the church and cause so many problems. I am with Cardinal Burke: Pope Francis please speak the faith clearly, because to many faithful it looks like you are more scared of offending the world than of heresy. And to those attacking Cardinal Burke, remember St. Paul plainly rebuked St. Peter to his face when St. Peter was also passively spreading the heresy of judaizers through fear of offendeing its proponents.

Lord have mercy!!!

My understanding is that this is a pastoral synod on the family, not a euchemenical council to settle matters regarding the faith.

In your analogy, St. Peter sided with those who wanted to keep things the same (circumcision and adhearance to the law of Moses) and St. Paul advocated a change to make it easier for the Gentiles. I’m not sure that’s the point you wanted to make though.
