The Episcopal Church in my town also calls itself the Catholic Church, so the label isn’t exclusive. They have a female pastor, which really confuses people some times.
No, the word is not exclusive to apostolates approved. Heretics use the word, Protestants use the word, and ministries that try to convert Catholics use the word. The point is, if the word is used by an organization, that organization is not to be trusted.
Spadaro is a close advisor to Pope Francis. Whether or not an interdict is necessary, this suggests that he agrees ETWN stepped over the line.
The whole “interdict” thing seems like extremist rhetoric. Let’s face it, we have no idea how the network is dealing with EWTN. They may be correcting the issue. My own view point is I will not watch them until Arroyo is gone. He is too biased to be a journalist.

So if you don’t watch Biased news anchors where do you get your news from?

At last count 5678 persons have been ordained by the media as “close advisors of the pope” and another 12,324 are media designated as official “friends of the pope”. That per media. But over in the Catholic Church your own pastor would have more authority.

Okay, that first was a joke. I get most national news from local sources (they are more balanced), CNN, FOX, and mostly by looking at multiple sources, screening that which is editorial and synthesizing what I can.

That and I remain skeptical about weird stuff.

If you don’t mind a personal comment, I like where you are coming from. It is refreshing to engage a Catholic perspective that is not distorted by partisan politics that are extrinsic to the Church. We may not agree on everything, but at least I feel we are standing on common ground.

ETWN is not a parish, it’s a Catholic media outlet. I am not sure exactly who they answer to as an apostolate, but it would not be the pastor of a parish. Those guys have enough to do! Sounds like its the local bishop who monitors them.

Spadaro is more than just an advisor to Pope Francis. The way I understand it, as editor of La Civilta Cattolica, Spadaro is the unofficial voice of the Papacy. His job is to reflect what Pope Francis thinks, which is why all the articles printed in the magazine are vetted and revised by the Secretariat of State of the Holy See and must receive his approval before being published.

If Spadaro was doing his job correctly and ETWN attacked what he was saying, that is essentially a direct attack on Pope Francis and his agenda. That sort of thing happens all the time on independant media outlets like NCR, but it should not happen on one that is supposed to represent the Church.

ETWN needs to watch out that it doesn’t become more Catholic than the Pope.

All Catholics are under the authority of their Bishop. The Bishop that has authority over the Diocese where EWTN is located approves of EWTN.

The Bishop of where NCR is located has sanctioned CNR.

Spadaro has no “direct” authority over EWTN. His opinion is only that opinion.

No, not that much, but I do not watch the editorial shows at CNN or FOX. I have found CNN to be less likely to engage in bias that FOX.

Isn’t that interesting I don’t follow the the editorial shows much either and I find the CNN presents a very biased opinion on pretty much everything they announce on the nightly news, While FOx is only half as much.

I guess that shows that we also have a bias. hmmm! it is interesting that you only refuse to put Ray on this (not talking about blogs like LSN) but not other bias news anchors. Of which their are plenty at both CNN and Fox.

The pope speaks for himself. Other people may, more or less, express views that are compatible with his; and when they write for a given newspaper, that may, to some extent, be reviewed for compatibility. But compatibility is far from “speaking for the pope”.

Keep in mind this is mostly about individuals, after work, going on social media. EWTN is overseen spiritually by their local bishop. Most of the criticism of Arroyo is not what he says on EWTN but what he says on social media, on his own personal sites. After work.

The same is true for “advisors” or “spokesmen” for Pope Francis, who use personal social media all the time. After work. Even if an editor or adviser has their official communications vetted, they then go on personal social media, or otherwise do personal press releases, that are controversial. (Keep in mind many advisers are at the Vatican only a few times each year, and only advise on their specialty. But they give press releases on whatever the media craves that week).

Just as when people see an Arroyo tweet, and say “EWTN”, they see a personal tweet or press release from someone who sometimes works for the Vatican, and say “Vatican”.

If you want to know what Pope Francis thinks, read what he wrote or said.

While I like your post, there is one part I see as relevant, that I think you do not. When one works as a public figure, then their tweets will always be under the color of their job. This is true for journalists and politicians, as well as others, like principals, police, etc. The type of job affects how much this must apply.

Of course I think that is relevant! But the Church, and for that matter everyone else, has not yet figured out how to adapt to the rapidly changing social media landscape.

This has been abused by both liberals and conservatives. Sometimes there are press conferences, and press releases, or social media, where someone mentions that this does not represent the diocese, or ministry, or Vatican, or whatever. But everyone ignores that disclaimer, and quotes them based on their perceived position in their day job.

Sometimes this might be with the implied consent of their employer, as a sneaky way to take a shot. Other times people abuse what they call “free speech in the Church”, and the employer may be uncertain how to respond, if they are popular and know just how far they can push the envelope. Keep in mind there is a whole “rights” movement now.

This has been a problem with the last few popes. It seems to be much more of a problem with the current papacy, and for that matter the current EWTN, and the current lots of things.

Jennifer Roback Morse has some thoughts on the upcoming seminars. And perhaps some suggestions for speakers:

“I see where Cardinal Cupich is planning a series of seminars on Amoris Laetitia. According to a letter obtained by the Catholic News Agency, the “New Momentum Conferences on Amoris Laetitia,” will “provide formative pastoral programs.” As someone who has listened to many victims of the Sexual Revolution, I am eager to learn about the “pastoral practice” these seminars will promote. I wonder if they will feature adult children of divorce or unmarried parents among their presenters.”

As a social worker for 40 years I saw enormous problems related to divorce/remarriage or unmarried couples living together.

Maybe somewhere, someone had some kind of problem related to delays in getting divorce, or staying too long in a loveless marriage, or supposedly slow marriage tribunals. But if those problems of nondivorce were there, they never rose to the level of severe intervention by child welfare, juvenile justice, psychotherapy, police, and so on.

In my diocese, Catholic Charities deals non stop with the problems of divorce/remarriage, or couples living together without marriage. Yet if you read the diocesan newspaper, the problems of nondivorce or slow anullments get far more attention.

This magazine is different. It is a basically the unofficial media outlet for the Papacy. It has been so for 150 years. This is how Pope Francis addressed them last year:

“…My predecessors, from blessed Pius IX to Benedict XVI, meeting with you in audience, have acknowledged many times how your navigation is in the Barque of Peter. This closeness to the Pontiff is always an essential trait of your magazine. You are in the Barque of Peter. It, at times in history—today as yesterday—can be tossed around by the waves and there is nothing surprising about this. But even the very sailors called to row in the Peter’s boat may row in the opposite direction. It has always happened. You of Civiltà Cattolica must be «”expert and courageous rowers” (Pius VII, Bull Sollicitudo omnium Ecclesiarum): therefore row! Row, be strong, even against the head wind! We row at the service of the Church. We row together!» (Homily at Vespers with Te Deum, September 27, 2014). This is the closeness between you and me. And I express my «strong desire that this closeness is not only maintained, but is strengthened» (John Paul II, Discourse to the writers of “La Civiltà Cattolica”, January 19, 1990). Let’s always go forward in our navigation, pushed by the breath of the Holy Spirit who guides us.”

They have been around for a long time, but only last year launched an English edition. Spadaro is the Pope’s man. He’s not just a commentator - he represents the views of the Pope.

Father Spadaro has ZERO authority in the Church, and frankly Catholics owe no assent to anything he says.

I figured the day would come when EWTN is maligned. A television network that hasn’t changed in orthodoxy since it’s inception and was once never maligned but now so because of the apparent era of dissent from anything truthful. The same network (EWTN) whose founder was praised by Pope Francis himself.

What is this NCR your speak of? The same NCR that has been intervened by a bishop of the Church and recently condemned again (bishop finn of Kansas city in 2013) and proclaimed by the bishop of the diocese in which its (tiny) headquarters are located as not affiliated with the Church in any way shape or form. (national catholic reporter)

Or are you talking about the NCR that is owned by EWTN and has episcopal approval from their local ordinary? Nation Catholic Register. (note I used a capital C in this one)

I am not required to believe anything that comes forth from the mouth of Spadaro. He wasn’t elected pope and there are ZERO papal documents that declare Spadaro anything more than a counselor.
