Cardinal Cupich says "discern truth" - WHAT?

The job of clerics like Cardinal Cupich is to be guardians of truth and tradition. Not to help give you a green light to do whatever your conscience discerns is okay for you.

What? I thought here we go again with denying God’s absolute truth and replacing it with situation ethics where a person determines right or wrong, sin or not, based on their particular circumstances.
This is what some Pharisees said to Jesus when He healed a man on the Sabbath.

Cardinal Burke tells us what discernment in the article.

Cardinal Burke clarified with Katolikus Válasz what discernment is and what it is not.

“Discernment means seeking to know the will of God in my life,” he said. “As such, it means studying carefully what God teaches us in the Church and applying it faithfully to my life.”

“Discernment does not decide what is right or wrong but leads the person to inform himself as fully as possible,” continued Cardinal Burke, “so that he can make a right judgment in a particular matter, that is, so that he can act in accord with the truth which God has written upon his heart or conscience.”

There we go again, the false dichotomy that makes out the law to be something mean and rigid and in opposition to “a deeper relationship with God.” Nauseating indeed.

Accompanied by a priest…
It isn t like a magnet turning wild. But for some reason, people think it is a chat,a priest is dumb, and people who have already made up the minds before the alleged " chat’ will " inform " the priest what they have already decided…
Which is of course always the green light for whatever.
Discernment= do as you wish.
It would be advisable to ask the priest if this is of direct concern to somebody…
Also ,annulments. Since there are a lot of annulment in one country, one thinks it is the same everywhere else . it is not. And for many reasons.
Many of us are very spoilt in many ways. Not everyone has access to the basics,to begin with.

The bottom line in all this is what Cardinal Burke has reminded us: no bishop, no priest…no pope…can make it okay for the divorced and remarried to receive Communion if they are not practicing sexual abstinence. No “discernment,” no “spiritual journey,” no obfuscation of the truth can permit it. It is a false mercy to pretend otherwise and to lead people astray.

which biblical passage are you referring to?
Excuse me, it was a woman who was healed not a man.

Luke 13

Cure of a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath.
He was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.”
He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, “There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.”
The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering?
This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?"
When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

Look,I will be frank.
When I see the realities around me,I wonder how people survive sometimes. And this isn t to call for " victims" or " feelings" but if a teacher has to walk for 7 hours to get to a school.or children have to swim across a river to learn to read and write…imagine, what on earth is an annulment for so many?
But this is just a thought.
And this I have said before( sorry for the ones that think I am a broken record…): in all my life I know of two annulments and a third one somebody told me because I asked. And one was identity fraud directly… So,we may really live in very different worlds…

My sentiments exactly. No authority on Earth can make it ok for people in an objective state of sin to receive communion. Father Aidan Nichols OP said that those who believe otherwise are condoning a form of concubinage - church sanctioned concubinage.

And this issue isn’t just about sacreligious communions. Certain interpretations of AL undermine the entire moral theology of the Church.

We have divine law, which is absolute truth given to us by God. I think your point is that we are not to work on the sabbath? Firstly, we can and must perform necessary human work but not any work that could be done on another day. Secondly, a way of honoring and worshiping God on the sabbath and to bring Him glory is to do work or actions associated with building up the kingdom of God. Christ was glorifying his Father by healing this woman. I think many Catholics do things on Sunday related to glorifying God - even doing what we are now - discussing this topic and other things.

It is impossible to deny that there is evident disagreement among members of the hierarchy currently, particularly about the interpretation of Amoris Laetitia. In a recent article here, a priest lays out some of the things that still need clarification.

Thanks for sharing Jim. It amazes me when people deny that there are any problems with AL. It sometimes feels like I’m living the story ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ because everybody knows that there are problems but too many keep denying it - despite the fact that it’s been written about in credible newspapers and discussed on EWTN.

I would like to say that we have a responsibility to God, our church, and all Catholics to do what we can to make known to them that there is disagreement and it is in their best interests that they follow what is happening from a couple of different sources - representing both sides. With knowledge comes responsibility and God is counting on us to help our sisters and brothers.

…you have the grace by God to discern truth in your life in terms of where the Lord is calling you to the next step…
From the snippet of the interview that I watched on youtube, it seems to me that Cardinal Cupich could be interpreted as saying we can discern what is right and wrong in the direction to go next, like “ought I go to seminary and prepare for the priesthood”. This is not about a moral absolute. It is about the direction one goes in life. I agree with him if that is what he is saying. Discernment does apply to choices and path in life.

Then his whole “adult” and child thing could be seen like when we are a child, our parents make those decisions, like telling you you must do a school sport, but as an adult, you get to choose about participating in a sport. Maybe. But since he talks about conscience in the surrounding context, it seems unlikely. But I don’t think as “adults” we get to decide it is okay in some situation to torture a child. We just can’t. No discernment is required to know that.

Really?

Discernment is not the activity of deciding what ever you like as correct but rather the application of the church teaching to your life.

Or more biblically put :

" But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema"
-Galatians 1:8
