An article which I believe sums up much of what many us are feeling on this issue.
I hope not, but I believe you may be right, especially the part about this writer not being able to understand the Cardinal. It kind of makes the judgment he makes (“In my mind…”) questionable. He relies on assumption, conjecture, and most unfortunately, his own wisdom. This is something we simply are not supposed to do but in America we have taken it as some sort of divine right to have an opinion about everything, even about what the Cardinal did not say. Let us not forget what actually happened. The Cardinal was commenting on the law. It was some “journalist” that tried to make the issue personal with the phrase “Catholic in good standing”
Later, Zwilling did not say Cuomo was a Catholic in good standing. In fact, as much as this has been overlooked,
no one has made this statement. Cardinal Dolan is not the American Pope. He may not be Cuomo’s confessor of bishop for that matter. This point seems debatable. It may not be his call. Furthermore, this bill is in process. Any sort of formal procedure would be premature. Therefore, since statements about the state of another can only follow private consideration, any statement is premature.
What shocks me is the criticism that Cardinal Dolan has receive for simply speaking against this bill and then not getting personal in his comments about Cuomo. Is everyone this easily duped and manipulated by the press?
