When I lived in Chicago, 20 years ago, I wasn’t sure what to make of Fr. Pfleger. But since then, I have noticed how strong of leader he has been for the community. Yes, he sometimes says or does controversial things. And he has sometimes been close to controversial figures. But perhaps he would not have been nearly as effective otherwise.

I think the Church would do well to have more priests with the courage and energy of Fr. Pfleger.

I have a friend whose husband is a respected member of their community. He’s a dentist. Everyone loves him!

He gave her herpes. Gets drunk at night and wants dinner, then throws it on the floor. Back to work the next day-everyone loves him! Great public personna…

She finally took their daughter, and with the help of friends-left him. He has visitation on Wednesday nights-he picks up their daughter and takes her out to eat. My friend takes that time to run to the grocery.

Now that he has a new girlfriend, and the court order makes him spend Wednesday evening with the daughter—he picks a fight with the daughter and drops her off several blocks down the road, and makes her walk home. Pitch black outside, except for the street lights. She comes to my house, because her mother’s at the grocery-in tears!

He does work for the local Charities. Oh yeah, he’s a hero.
My friend told me, “He’s a good person.”

I finally had it. I told her what he does to their daughter (and her-but their daughter alone)—NEGATES everything else he does.

Jerk.

When I told my husband he gave her herpes, he said he’s glad we never went and had him put his hands in our mouths.

And, still they come.

You Bet, Beau-Dale, Yes! During the Election, Father Pfleger was such a visible representative of the Catholic Faith-we heard the context of his famous speeches!

I would bet the RCIA classes in Chicago Churches were chock-full after all that!

I know the people around here couldn’t stop talking about him!

Such a Leader for those of you (who live in Chicago) to pattern yourselves after!

Yes! Perhaps your Seminarians will develop the “courage and energy” of His Homilies!

Okay lets deal with some facts. In May 2007 he participated in a march with people to protest gun violence and said to the owner of a legitimate gun shop owner, “He’s the owner of Chuck’s. John Riggio. R-i-g-g-i-o. We’re going to find you and snuff you out… you know you’re going to hide like a rat. You’re going to hide but like a rat we’re going to catch you and pull you out.” How the Police, whom some were participating in the march did not arrest him for making death threats is a scandal but I digress. The next day he said he did not know what “snuff you out” meant. He is a liar on that one as any idiot knows what that means and certainly one that is involved in fighting violence.

Then of course you have him accusing Hilary Clinton of being a racist when Obama won the Democratic nomination. Hilary Clinton is many things, being a racist isn’t one of them. He should know better.

You have him being friends with Louis Farrakhan who is an anti-semite and bigot.

You have him inviting Pro-Abortion speakers to address his congregation. Imagine what the reaction would have been if it was David Duke.

Pfleger is a disgrace to the Priesthood.

Does the Archbishop address this negative image? Does he leave us to try to figure out why this priest is so honored, is it for his anti-white remarks?

As far as I can tell, the announcement has been very low key. If a press release was sent out, I couldn’t find it. However, the Archdiocese’s website has a page for News and Coming Events, and it does show up there, but with little information.

As you can see Fr. Pfleger, and another priest, are both receiving awards, along with four other individuals.

Does he leave us to try to figure out why this priest is so honored, is it for his anti-white remarks?

Do you know how many people have been convicted of making ‘straw purchases’ out of that shop? Maybe catching and pulling out the shop purveyors related to the lawsuit against them? When you know those details you should comment.

Then of course you have him accusing Hilary Clinton of being a racist when Obama won the Democratic nomination.

How do you know what? The cardinal told you he was chagrined?

Actually, he was ordered to take two weeks off for being involved in politics. Was he ever convicted of criminal destruction of property? Do you know what the billboards said?

We have a real problem here in the Chicago Archdiocese. Pfleger is just one little pimple (in a very prominent spot - tip of the nose maybe) on an Archdiocese face full of acne. The whole Archdiocese (clergy, employees, influential laity and volunteers) is infested with leftist, dissenting persons. Sarcasm aside, the RCIA is probably infested as well. If they get wind that a candidate is a conservative they would probably throw them out of the program. Please remember - this is Obama land - the majority of people (including Catholics) support left leaning structures - the Chicago Church encourages this. Pleger probably caused people to rush to join the Chicago version of Catholicism.

CanadianGuy, what looks like racism to you (and perhaps to many members of CAF) isn’t necessarily racism. Who was injured by Fr. Pfleger’s remarks? (which he apologized for, btw.)

It seems pretty clear that Fr. Pflger was making an appeal of racial solidarity. I don’t doubt that his words resonated with many of the people in the audience because it was their impression of her attitude. And certainly Hilary Clinton began the primary season with the attitude that she was the heir apparent to the Democratic nomination. Of course, the surprise loss of the Iowa caucus tripped her up, but she didn’t start scrambling until President Obama won a string of primary victories in February.

As for Louis Farrakhan, I was living in Chicago’s South Side when he first sprang to national attention in the 1980s. I was startled that he was based so close to where I lived and yet I had never heard of him (which speaks to my ignorance of the situation.) Upon asking around, I was told, by someone who was active in multiple community organizations, that Farrakhan was not new. He had a great deal of respect and influence and it was impossible for anyone to be a leader in Chicago’s black community without coming to terms with him. I can’t assess the accuracy of that statement, but I think Fr. Pfleger could… far better than most of us here at CAF can.

Fr. Pfleger publicly endorsed a rabidly pro-abortion candidate (Barack Obama). That alone should disqualify him for consideration of any sort of honor, award, or any other sort of public praise, unless and until he publicly recants. His other antics are only icing on the cake.

Why does everything always have to be cut and dried? Life isn’t that way, y’all realize? Fr. Phleger, like me and you, is a sinner reliant on Jesus for redemption and sanctification. Do I have major problems with him sometimes? Sure I do! I tend to agree that he has fallen under the spell of the Karl Marx / Saul Alinsky model of response to poverty and injustice rather than the Mother Theresa / John Paul II approach. And that is to his discredit. But I can’t quite bring my flabby, pampered suburban white butted self to condemn the man when he’s voluntarily chosen to LIVE a life of poverty, among the violence prone streets of his parishioners and paint a big bullseye on his back when he speaks out against gang violence, drug dealers, criminal-catering gun dealers and so forth.

I don’t think he’s racist as much as he tries overly hard to make sure that his parishioners understand that he “gets it”. Even if he didn’t grow up with it, even if he has never experienced a suspicious look or hospitality denied due to his skin color, he comprehends just what a disadvantage it is to be black in America. I thought his lampoon of Hillary was actually spot-on! We’re ALL bigoted if we are honest. It’s part of being a sinful human. We make bad assumptions basedon stereotypes. That doesn’t make Hillary a Jim Crow southern belle. It means she’s human and sinful, like me.

If good intentions were all it took, this man would be a saint. Instead of demonizing him, how about we pray that he be blessed with wisdom and faith in God’s plan (rather than his own) to go along with his zeal? IMO, he’s honestly got the self-sacrificial nature needed to be a saint if he’d just humble himself enough to take Christ’s path to service instead of Farrakhan’s.

Is it true that he has gone on record that he will not obey if reassigned to a different parish than St. Sabina’s? I’ve heard that a few times, but have never seen a source cited.

While I don’t particularly care for Father Phleger and never have, his parish is in a particularly troubling Chicago neighborhood and he has worked quite well with the people there to help clean it up as much as possible from the immoral riff-raff that preys on the young and the addicted. The people there support their priests which I can’t say exists throughout the Chicagoland area. They expect from their priests and those priests deliver. They believe in social justice and actively work to alleviate the suffering of those to whom they minister. Phleger is one of them. He has been the right person for the right job and the good Lord has seen fit to keep him there. Calling him a race-baiter makes you no better than anyone else in name-calling.
