10 points. 👍

Evidence: Over 260,000 attended the Marian year tribute in Soldier’s Field in 1954.

Wow. I wonder if I was THERE! I’d have been 3 years old, but my folks and both sets of grandparents (aunts, uncles, etc.) were quite devout and likely to go to something like that.

Since I dinged Chicago City Hall a bit … here’s something that happened at Daley Plaza that really gave me a smile. A “flash mob” of balloon bearing, happy young pro-life teens showed up to counter a so-called “walk for choice.” I like the stealth unveiling of the balloons and the happy attitude of the Chicago kids there … but my favorite part comes about 5:50 in the segment.

And when they split up into two groups and happily competed in who could do this cheer LOUDER: “We love babies, yes we do! We love babies, how about YOU?!”

Made me proud of the city of my birth! Also … nice shots of breathtaking Chicago downtown. 🙂

I thought the Cardinal’s statement was eloquent and to the point. He did not demean anyone, he did not criticize anyone. He stated very clearly what the true definition of marriage is. If I had 10 thumbs, that statement would be a 10 thumbs up!!👍

A slight nitpik–it is “Soldier Field.” 🙂
I stand corrected.

But Soldier Field has been totally rebuilt so I doubt if we can get a big turnout there today.

It would have to be Wrigley Field as Mayor Emmanuel won’t even touch that place. 🙂

LOL–or the Cell.

Too scary. If they granted THAT permit it’d be with the proviso that the exploding scoreboard’s barrels be trained on the altar! :hey_bud:

Don’t think that’s the “cell” some politicians have in mind for us. :nope:

One outdoor public spectacle mass per year in a large venue might not be a bad idea though. I suggest one - a week before national elections every - two years. Hey, maybe make it a Traditional Latin Mass too. (I know some of those were said in Catacombs, not sure about ballparks … but to meet in the middle, hey, maybe Wrigley after all. That “ship’s mast” on the scoreboard looks like a cross to get things started). :signofcross:

It’d be a refreshing change to see the Bishop offering THE Sacrifice … in place of the usual light hitting pitchers trying to lay one down. < :whacky: Not serious here.

As for actual problems with reverence, I remember Pope John Paul II saying open air masses in stadiums. The most memorable adjustment was in Tempe, Arizona where a devil on the scoreboard (Arizona State U’s mascot is a “Sun Devil” cartoon) was covered up for the day.

That had its secular counterpart when POTUS BH Obama spoke at Georgetown U. and demanded that an IHS symbol in Gaston Hall be covered. IHS symbolizes the name of Jesus Christ. :tsktsk:

I do wonder if President Obama makes similar demands of Muslim venues or if he’d visit
Tienamen Square in Peking and ask for Mao’s picture be turned to the wall. But I don’t wonder long.

Trad mass in a ballpark - the ultimate collision of the ancient, modern, reverent & “cool”?
:hmmm: Well, they did something at ***Soldier Field in 1954. Wish I had a picture of this ***- haven’t seen an overview one yet. Just a close-up of some Knights of Columbus that could have been from anywhere.

How much longer will speech like this be tolerated in the US?

archchicago.org/blog/comments.aspx?postID=276
The answer is simple: As long as the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution is in effect!
The First Amendment of our Constitutions, guarentees the Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, and the Freedom of Assembly. We can say anything we want to, anywhere we want to, except possibly yelling “Fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire, or committing libel.
We also have the right to like or dislike anyone we want. The only thing not permitted in this regard is officially condoned racial or religious bigotry. Expressing anti gay sentiments orally or in print has yet to be outlawed. You may be publicly ostracized for making such statements, but you can make them.
No where, outside of possibly San Francisco and New York City have gay “civil rights” been held up in the law courts. These “rights” have been largely the creation of the mass media, and several local legislatures have acted accordingly.

A manifestation of the “One man, one field” principle! :yukonjoe:

A slight nitpik > a night chickflick; but a slight nitpick < a night picnic***

Soldier ON! 🙂 (Or should I say “Bear Down … Chicago Beeeeeears”)

I couldn’t find a picture of the stadium but here’s one of a ticket.

What a talented fellow you are. I can’t tell where the counsel ends and the compliment begins! Thanks. :dancing:

This isn’t the same event, but how about the 28th International Eucharistic Congress held at Soldier Field in 1926?
