I believe he is 73 so unfortunately by canon law that would mean there are two more years until the official date.Does anyone know when this Cardinal will finally retire?

I do have to say that with how small Orange County is San Juan Capistrano can’t be that long of a drive. I’ve lived there my entire life until this last August. However, it is in the small Serra Chapel there. I haven’t been to it, though. I have insomnia.Don’t know if pictures are available with tortilla chips, but there were pictures of the archbishop with what appeared to be a Kool-Aid pitcher on the altar at Taj Mahony, the LA cathedral.
Left leaning? If he leans any farther, he better be right-handed because he might fall and break his other hand.
Watch for a sequel to last year’s skantilly-clad liturgical dancers from this week’s soiree Card. Mahony is sponsoring in the neighboring Diocese of Orange, which is part of the region “overseen” by LA.
LA and Orange dioceses graciously permit limited celebration of the EF in small, out of the way churches or chapels, mostly at times not very convenient for families. One 7 a.m. TLM in OC is just about as far north as you can go and still be in the diocese; and there is no public transportation available. On my visits there, I see a lot of people participating in the dialogue Mass who would not be suffering from nostalgia, because they were born since V2.
Haven’t been to the early Sunday morning TLM at San Juan Capistrano because it is 'way down at the other end of the county, but hear that it is SRO in the small Serra Chapel, rather than in the new basilica church.
From Pope John Paul II:
Yet active participation does not preclude the active passivity of silence, stillness and listening: indeed, it demands it.
While I don’t really agree with the the comments printed (I’m guessing at least to some degree they are out of context) they are certainly not nearly as offensive as many of the attacks of the OF I have seen on these pages.wdtprs.com/blog/2009/03/card-mahony-on-the-tridentine-mass/
Looks like the good Cardinal has just offended Traditional Catholics and even Eastern Catholics/Orthodox for that matter.![]()
He’s through in 2011. Ain’t gonna happen.I go to the Latin Mass in the Serra Chapel of the mission in San Juan Capistrano once or twice a month. It is always standing room only.
You would be amazed at the humber of young people who attend…and I’m talking TEENAGERS !!! The attendance at the NO masses at the new cathedral next door are nowhere near as well attended.
There are other churches within the L.A.Archdiocese that still have the Latin Mass…so Mahony hasn’t outlawed it…yet.
I think what he is alluding to is the fact that the Divine Liturgy doesn’t, nor ever will have, extraordinary ministers of holy communion (EMHC), the laity standing behind the iconostasis (EMHCs) around the Holy Table, altar girls, or people holding hands and raising them up in the air, during the Our Father, as well as folk music where everyone in the pews starts singing and clapping. The Divine Liturgy has way more in common with the Tridentine Mass, than it does with the New Mass. Women are NOT allowed behind the iconostasis, and only boys are allowed to be altar servers. And that will never change!.While I don’t really agree with the the comments printed (I’m guessing at least to some degree they are out of context) they are certainly not nearly as offensive as many of the attacks of the OF I have seen on these pages.
What I find even more offensive is “Fr. Z’s” attempting to apply the Cardinal’s comments to the Eastern liturgies. While you may strongly disagree that “non participation” quality the Cardinal perceives with the Tridentine Mass, it is NOT a part of at least the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom.
All that “fr. z” did was try to offend more people.
There are a lot more EF Masses in OC now.I’m not sure about in LA County, but Orange County is pretty well attended by the EF (TLM). Orange County is directly to the south of LA County in case you don’t know. Orange County has at least two EF Masses. I’m not sure if the one in Huntington Beach is back or not. I believe they are well attended even though they are at 7AM. Both of them are either at that time or right around it. Now, Orange County (the Diocese is the same as the county) is not a large county. If you look at a map you can barely see it. There is also an independent church which isn’t in communion with Rome. It’s in the last place I expected to find a Latin Mass. They have three Masses every Sunday that are overfull. People do stand in the narthex type area and outside at every Sunday Mass. I’m not sure how well attended the daily Masses are.
Last time I checked LA County had one EF Mass a week. They were at one church the 1st Sunday of the month, another the 2nd Sunday of the Month, and so on.
Well, I mentioned four of them. As far as I have heard St Mary’s is the OF in Latin. I’m not sure if that is correct, though. As far as I know the other church doesn’t associate with the SSPX because it doesn’t use the later Missal. I believe they use the one from 1952 or thereabouts. I could check mine to be sure, but my husband moved it.There are a lot more EF Masses in OC now.
7.30 am, Polish Center, Yorba Linda (far north part of the county)
8am (with an extra 6.30 am on first sunday)-Mission San Juan Capistrano (far south)
12 noon-St Mary’s by the Sea, Huntington Beach (mid/north)
12.30-St. John the Baptist, Costa Mesa (mid county)
Then there is also another church that is of questionable communion (simillar in status to the SSPX but a little farther adrift, refuses to associate even with the Society) that offers several.
Yeah, it’s all good. I wasn’t just replying to you only, but also to others in the thread who were saying that there were two and those only early in the morning.Well, I mentioned four of them. I think the capacity for the Serra Chapel is only for a few hundred vs. the large Basilica, and as most of the people are coming from other parishes, the chapel gets filled up.I go to the Latin Mass in the Serra Chapel of the mission in San Juan Capistrano once or twice a month. It is always standing room only.

The day will come he will face far worse than that. We should pray for his soul and all those under his care. His views are disturbing, to say the least.“Does not instill…???”
I would like to dare the Cardinal to face the countless named and unnamed saints who have been nourished by Christ through the Latin Mass.
Where is the quasi SSPX chapel? I’ve lived in OC all my life and been into tradition for a few years now, and never heard of it. What’s the name of the chapel??There are a lot more EF Masses in OC now.
