Cardinal Pell charged and must return

I didn’t even say that and I probably posted the most blunt things.

I’ll say it upright: I do not trust Pell. The letter to David Ridsdale. The 60 minutes interview. I don’t trust him. A couple members of the abuse commission resigned when he was made the head, people who were victims of abuse by priests.

But I don’t know if he’s guilty of these charges.
Indeed, I remember the resignations and interview with Peter Saunders:

smh.com.au/national/popes-commissioner-for-child-protection-says-cardinal-pell-is-a-dangerous-individual-and-almost-sociopathic-20150531-ghdl9n.html
**Pope’s commissioner for child protection says Cardinal Pell is a ‘dangerous individual’ and ‘almost sociopathic’
Cardinal George Pell is “a dangerous individual” and “almost sociopathic” in his response to child sexual abuse victims, Pope Francis’ specially-appointed commissioner for the protection of children, Peter Saunders, says.
In an interview with Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes, Mr Saunders said Cardinal Pell had a “moral responsibility” to front the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and address allegations that he knew of priests abusing children in Ballarat and elsewhere but did nothing to stop it. Cardinal Pell has denied these accusations.
“I personally think that his position is untenable, because he has now a catalogue of denials,” Mr Saunders said in the interview, which aired on Sunday night.
“He has a catalogue of denigrating people, of acting with callousness, cold-heartedness – almost sociopathic, I would go as far as to say – this lack of care.”
Pope Francis last December appointed Mr Saunders, a British survivor of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, to the new Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors to ensure the Catholic Church acted with greater accountability and transparency in relation to child sexual abuse.
Mr Saunders said that, by refusing to front the royal commission until he was specifically invited, Cardinal Pell was “making a mockery of the Papal Commission, of the Pope himself, but most of all, of the victims and the survivors”.**
That was back in 2015.

The charges are probably related to the previous allegations that he behaved indecently while playing with boys in a swimming pool in the 1970s.

abc.net.au/news/2016-07-27/george-pell-the-swimming-pool-allegations/7664688. [July, 2016]

The Victorian police breached protocol by airing these allegations before the investigation was completed. A suppression order on the media now can’t undo the information which has already been published.

I personally think these old and fairly minor allegations are a waste of valuable police resources. The only purpose behind them is to attack a senior figure in the church.

Fairly minor allegations. An older man tries to grope your genitals. Minor allegations. Get over it. Not to mention this also may include rape.

Sometimes, it seems to me a lot of Catholics have learned nothing about the abuse scandals. If it is true, it’s minor and old, and maybe the individual can offer up his suffering to God for the souls in purgatory. As someone who suffers from depression, let me tell you, it’s not as easy as saying a rosary.

And it’s also things like this that make me think the Church deserves to lose members.

It’s up to the courts to decide guilt or innocence.

Pray for Our Holy Father, Pope Francis

I used the wrong words - “fairly minor”. Perhaps “relatively minor” would have been better.

Relatively minor, compared to serious sexual molestation and physical abuse which is happening to many young people right now, and in the recent past, and which deserves police attention.

*Mr Dignan said that during the “game”, Father Pell would “grab you, around the testes, around the ****”.

"[It made me feel] scared. Scared but hurt — very forceful around the ***," Mr Dignan said.

From the article you linked to.

Compared to serious sexual molestation? I had to edit part of that for fear of the moderators.

It’s painful to see this crisis reach such a higher level of the Church, but, it goes without saying that the truth coming out is paramount above everything. Going home and standing trial is a no-brainer.

If these charges are well-founded, Pell needs to be sent to the wall. The homosexual clergy networks need to be smashed, and if takes jailing and laicizing a Cardinal, so be it.

If not, his false contemnors should be sent to the wall. But the homosexuals should still take note–if a Cardinal can be tried, so can any of them.
This isn’t about homosexuals, it’s about sexual abuse.

If it’s true, it’s neither minor nor old. A church leader committing mortal sin in this way. Maybe “older men” do this where you come from, here it’s assault. Dismissing the assault and the grave sin of a priest as an opportunity to offer up suffering is nothing but denial of the grave matter.

StudentMI was saying the same as you. He was being sarcastic about my attitude that these are relatively minor allegations.

Whatever the gravity of those allegations, two things remain:
  1. The actual charges have not yet been revealed. We do not know whether they will be the same as the previously released allegations.
  2. Cardinal Pell is innocent until proven guilty.

Very upsetting to hear, I don’t know what evidence they have on him or not, there was one false allegation against him that I had heard of (since apparently it was proven Pell wasn’t there at the time), I hope he will receive a fair and just trial, either way though, when something like this comes up, he should come back to Australia and face it which it appears he is doing.

If for some reason he doesn’t go back to Australia to face it, it will become a confirmation bias, as the saying goes, if your not guilty why did you run.

I hope this has helped

I will not condemn Cardinal Pell. That’s a duty way above my station, but I will say go home, stand before the court, and more importantly, stand before God and tell the truth, whatever that may be. I will pray for all involved.
Exactly.

God Bless You

Josh

Yup, the Church and any victims, since the Church is already surrounded by wolves who would love nothing more then to use some excuse to attack it even more, purposefully ignoring the fact that the Church has always condemned such practices and that it’s simply a matter of whether Pell is actually guilty or not.

What about praying for the victims of Ridsdale whom Pell protected?
Your assuming guilt here, indeed we should pray for the victims of sexual abuse.
What if these charges are true and Pell harmed these people?
Then Cardinal Pell should be removed from being a Cardinal and be arrested here in Australia until he has served his time and not be allowed to become a priest again and go to confession.

Now, what if it’s not true?

Either way we should hope and pray for a fair and just trial to get to the truth of this. And should Pell be found guilty, the one who committed the crime should do the time. Not the Catholic Church which has always condemned such acts.
What about praying for them, instead of loading that request as if the Church was under attack because of this man?
I think it’s naïve to think people are not going to use things like this to try and attack the Church.

I hope this has helped

God Bless You

Does anyone know how old Cardinal Pell is now and how long ago was it did these
abuses allegedly happen?

There are many who think the Church has corrected its problems with abuse. It has not. And the head in the sand approach from Catholics needs to stop.
Pelli should face this and if convicted The Pope himself needs to be responsible.

IF it’s true. Innocent until proven guilty. No Catholic approves of molesting a child.

Actually it would be more correct to say the Church has taken measures to correct the problem. When did this happen? I thought the article said “historic” in its notation of the crime which leads me to believe it’s been awhile. It may have been before the Church has implemented the changes it has.

Even with those changes it cannot be guaranteed that no further abuse of children will happen. No catholic thinks such thing as we have a "fool proof " system.

What do you possibly mean “head in the sand approach from Catholics”. How presumptuous and rude. I know of absolutely NO Catholic that puts their head in the sand and states “Oh no big deal, abuse of children.” It has been a heartbreaking experience for Catholics and many have left the Church over this issue.

You make it sound like Catholics think this is no big deal; you are absolutely wrong and it’s an offensive attitude.

Why should the Pope be responsible for another man’s actions?

Good grief, I am tired of the few posters here who seem to imply Catholics think this is no big deal.

Mary.
