Ok, I’ll admit that this news story is just a front so I would not technically be violating forum rules. Plus, the headline is such a hoot to anyone who has ever met Cardinal Seán. I do recommend that folks read it, because it is a terrific report.

My real intention is my I hope that people will take a look at Cardinal Seán’s blog about his experience before and during the conclave in Rome. It is a great first hand insider account complete with photos and all sorts of neat tidbits like this:

“Between the morning and afternoon gatherings we went back to the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Cardinal Bergoglio and I sat together for lunch. I could see he was under a lot of pressure at that point, and he did not eat much!” - Cardinal Seán

Cardinal O’Malley is cut from the same bolt of cloth as Pope Francis. He was named the Cardnal of Boston to clear up the misguided covered up mess left by gay Priests who seduced teen-age boys in their parishes. The Diocese of Boston had millions of dollars in court judgments against it.
Cardinal O’malley came on the scene wearing the Habit of the Franciscan order he belongs to, and promptly sold off the Archbishops mansion and moved into humble quarters. He continued to wear his Franciscan Habit and sandals (even in Winter) and instituted administrative reforms that were not only austere, but organizationally effective. He lessened the Diocesan debt by selling off all the non-essential real estate of his Diocese to pay off the law suits. His reign as the Archbishop Cardinal of Boston has been marked by orthodoxy and care for the poorest members of our society.

Cardinal Law left the Archdiocese of Boston in shambles. Since taking over, Cardinal Seán has had to heal some serious wounds and now things are getting back to normal. His new plan to restructure the parishes so all the churches can stay open despite a shortage of priests shows a lot of compassion even its going to be hard on the Pastors.

I think he’s really super!

What destruction are you referring to? I haven’t seen any sort of destruction.

It must really irk you then that he is chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities AND lunches with Pope Francis - who is apparently a big fan of Misa Criolla. :eek:

Considering that Pope Francis has been Pope for about a week it can’t be a lot of lunches unless you meant when our current Pope was a Cardinal. Did Cardinal O’Malley spend a lot of time in Argentina?

I am pretty upset at His Eminence for merging my parish with another and transferring two perfectly good priests to points unknown. We had a thriving parish, and for no good reason he is sending two of the best priests I have ever met elsewhere.

That is my two cents.

Although he is better than Bernard Law.
 
Financially solvent parishes have been closed under his watch. This does not strengthen the Catholic community.
 
Such a holy man. And he has been successful at every level. Or at least the Holy Fathers sure seem to have thought so.

Yes, I admit that I am biased.😉

He does make a mistake in his blog, though.

This pope is not Hispanic. He is of Italian blood only.

In the case of my old parish, we were told point blank that it was slated to be closed because of the financial burden of the sex abuse lawsuits.

Forgive me, truly, but who are you to say that His Eminence is “better” or worse than any other prelate? Furthermore none of the Faithful, be them of Boston or otherwise, know of the inner circumstances of these decisions. This new Pastoral Planning Initiative can be frightful, but it is being lead with the utmost prudence and sensitivity. I have been graced to be the Son of rather Affluent Parishes, so I have never experienced these closures which seem focused on the cities. But I tell you this, the lay rebellion that has risen at certain former Parishes that I will not name is utterly disgraceful.

I will sooner trust in the care and declarations of His Eminence the Archbishop on what does and does not strengthen Catholic Community, and what is and is not necessary for the times.

My understanding is the Catholic Culture of Boston has been lost. It hasn’t gotten any better under his watch.
Vocations continue to decline and the base of Mass Catholics are ignornant of or in open hostility to the magistarium of the Catholic Church.
I’m now far IIIremoved from the Northeast so maybe I’m missing something.
I not blaming him for this, I even think Cardinal Law inherited a mess. Most of the complaints predates him by years.
