If you don’t care for Colbert you can always get some YUKS from Michael Voris.

Now he’s a hoot! A real “laugh factory”. 😃

  1. What is agelastic? That’s a new one for me. 🤷
  2. Ok, you got me. Who is St. Genesius? Don’t tell me that he’s the patron saint of comedians. That title I would have given to either Philip Neri or John Bosco. Both were very funny men. John Bosco used comedy to help kids understand catechism. Philip Neri was known for being a satarist, to the point that he often drove the other priests in his house out of their minds. From the little that I know about him, nothing was off limits when it came to finding the comic side.
As to these fora, I think they tend to attract people who are asking questions. That kind of person is thrown off by self-deprecating humor, especially if it’s religious humor. It also attracts many people who are very intense about their faith and have a hard time finding others of equal intensity who want to discuss certain subjects. Intense people are often very sensitive. They don’t mean to be so. It’s who they are. I have an aunt who’s a convert to Catholicism. She reads everything that anyone writes about Catholicism, either Catholic or non Catholic and she reads it with such intensity that I swear it takes her sleep away.

No matter how many times I tell her to stay away from such things, she does not listen. She’s always going to be upset.

One has to learn to deal with the things. We can’t respond to everything the same way. Too much or not enough all the time are not good.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with the many posts in support of Colbert. He may very well be a strong and faithful Catholic who is trying to teach without seeming as if he is; however, I have had just about enough of making fun of the Catholic faith and Church. We have gone through a very rough time in recent years, and very much rather see people actually happily proclaiming the truth of the faith, rather than finding new ways to throw laughs our way. The faith has been a joke for the last 3-4 decades, and many people watching Colbert will NOT catch-on to his real meanings.

Some of the things he says are very difficult to see in a good light and I want our faith, the faith our Lord gave us, to be seen in the most awesome light–always.

BTW, as a slight form of litmus test as to how well he is catechizing with his humor and approach: the left loves him–they absolutely see him as one of their own. I really doubt they would see him as one of their own if they thought he was trying to teach them the truths of the faith (and also the so-called teaching he is doing must not be working).

Finally, whatever happened to: “let your yes be yes, and your no be no?”

You have to remember that he’s gong to be on with Cardinal Dolan, who is very orthodox and has a great sense of humor. If I’m understanding the article correctly, the goal is to have a face off between two Catholics whoa are faithful and funny. The goal is not to promote Colbert’s show.

Go to the following link and tell me how in the world the video can be defended (warning some of the language is quite crude). IMO, while Colbert does present Catholic truths, he does it in a way that makes it very much seem as if the Church is crazy (or hopelessly antiquated) to teach those things. There is no way I could ever see that video of Colbert as being good for the faith.

Ok, I won’t tell you.

He was an actor who played in plays that made fun of Christianity. His conversion was during one of these plays. The emperor wasn’t amused and beheaded him.

Sure, I get that, but it doesn’t mean that one can’t be sensitive or intense while having a sense of humor.

That video is HILARIOUS! I heartily thank you too for directing me to this excellent video. Colbert quotes Humanae Vitae. The writers of the article that embeds this video were successfully trolled if they think he is “scoffing” at Church teaching. Colbert may be the best public face of the Catholic Church since Blessed John Paul the Great.

We disagree. I think he is terrible for the faith. Catholics who know the faith well will indeed “understand” what Colbert is attempting to do, yet the vast majority will not–they will think he is joining them in their hatreds towards the Church.

Satire isn’t for all, and many don’t have the capacity or disposition to understand it. Even Swift’s A Modest Proposal was greatly misunderstood in his day (even now).

I doubt that–most people get satire, yet in this case one has to actually understand the faith to know that Colbert is using satire throughout the video (and a great many people have no clue why the Church holds various teachings). Colbert got some things just plain wrong, other things he presented in a very bad light, and in general the video comes across as a hearty attack against the faith. If Colbert’s intent was the opposite, he failed.

The fact that so many Catholics see value in Colbert’s so-called “Catholic” humor disturbs me, and it seems very much a sign of the times. Sadly.
 
What all did he get wrong? This intrigues me. If there were factual errors in that video, I completely missed them.
