”Alibaba said the deal was fueled by a desire to improve China’s image and offer an alternative to what it calls the biased lens of Western news outlets. While Alibaba said the Chinese government had no role in its deal to buy the Hong Kong newspaper, the company’s position aligns closely with that of the Communist Party, which has grown increasingly critical of the way Western news organizations cover China.”

That’s great. Love Alibaba.
Thanks for the link. Didn’t know about this. No wonder SCMP has improved.

Really disgusting that atheistic Communism seems to have apologists even on Catholic fora.

Couldn’t you disagree with his statements without insulting him?

I simply support Pope Francis on this issue. Is this so unCatholic?

Or is this a forum for people to criticise the Vatican?

It’s dissappointing that people who supposedly call themselves Catholic would be quick to criticise the Vatican without understanding the deep underlying issues.

I’m not criticizing the Vatican by any means, but the headline of 'Cardinal Zen’s mentality is long past its use-by date is incredibly offensive. Maybe you aren’t getting up there in years, maybe you don’t have octogenarian or nonogenarian parents who are sharp as tacks but get treated as senile coots simply because of the number of years they have lived triggering another person into dismissing them as ‘gaga’, maybe you think it’s a clever and funny ‘gotcha’ at the Cardinal, but the sentiment is distinctly UNCatholic. Again, I have no criticism of the Vatican; they aren’t the ones being offensive and certainly Pope Francis would never speak of one who had been his fellow cardinal for years in such dismissive and derogatory terms.

I do concede that newspaper use of language is offensive. Just because Cardinal is offensive himself at times (he has encouraged others to use obscene language to another person, which is worse than just offensive language) that is not a reason to use offensive language. So you are right.
Pope Francis would never incite others to use obscene language.
And it’s probably fair to expect religious leaders to have a higher standards than a journalist.
Even I as a average citizen and I don’t consider myself particularly holy, I have never incite others to use obscene language.

The Pro-Communist bent to these postings are so obvious, they are almost laughable. Please know that no one here is fooled. If that offends you, praise God.

Praise God indeed. Love the way how the Church is exploring new ways to deal with issues these days instead of sticking to past prejudices.
Praise The Lord.

How is this news? It’s an opinion piece that could’ve been posted in the other thread on China. But honestly, it doesn’t even belong here period because the opinion piece reads like a dirty rag in the checkout lane at a supermarket.

“Actually, it sounds more like the good bishop from Hong Kong doesn’t know his own history of Roman Catholicism – or contemporary international politics.”

Let me blunt: Bull.

I don’t know who was criticizing the Vatican; maybe you could show us. Perhaps Cardinal Zen has a point in not wanting to capitulate to the corrupt government of China. I’m glad that that the Vatican is trying to pursuit friendly relations with the Chinese government, but the government has to reciprocate. The conditions in this country are deplorable, and just because the conditions aren’t nearly as bad as, say, North Korea it does not mean that the people of China are oppressed. In light of this, I can sympathize with Cardinal Zen as well. In any case, the cardinal, the pope, and the people of China all need prayers in what has become undoubtedly a very sticky situation. George Weigel makes some good observations:
In China, the state, not a husband and wife, determine the number of children a couple can have, and while the notorious one-child policy has been replaced by a two-child policy, the regime continues to insist that official cadres, not parents, decide on the number of children a family may welcome. To enforce its internal population policies, the Chinese state claims the right to conduct compulsory abortions when women become pregnant in violation of state-determined birth quotas — a grotesque cruelty regularly practiced in the PRC today.

“Pope Francis would never incite others to use obscene language.”

You might want to do a simple internet search for the subject of the pope and obscene language.

Thanks!
I did a search and found Pope Francis swearing. Which I didn’t know so grateful for your point.
But that’s quite different to INCITING others to use obscene language to verbally abuse another person. I can’t find such instances of Pope Francis yet. But happy to be corrected.

This thread…with its offensive title…is nothing more than an advertisement for a media group that has been co-copted by atheistic Communists in Beijing to improve their image in the west. It is disgusting, deplorable, and nauseating.

Cardinal Zen is a hero of the faith, and here we are asking about whether he “incited people to use obscene language,” while giving free pass after free pass to those amazingly progressive atheistic Communists in Beijing.

Not going to work.
