I am not for vandalizing, but when the Church praises genocide, murder and slavery of a people by canonizing a devil this is the least of what would happen.
How I read the code (and RED “the code”):

:coolinoff: - phew, *well I guess it’s a good thing the Church didn’t do any of that then!

Sometimes we can read things wrong though. :hmmm:

I also get the sense that someone thinks Serra was really guilty of something or other.

Genocide? If Serra had done that … he’d have had no converts.

Slavery? Rather Serra helped lift the comparatively primitive peoples into an even better life on EARTH notwithstanding that Catholicism was a vast improvement over the deluded paganism the missionaries found about in “alta California”. For example the old stereotypical “sacrificing a virgin” (girl) to appease nature or an angry deity was actually done by one to the dominant tribes in the south (LA Basin and Catalina Island).

Serra and the Catholic missionaries rather taught against murder and slavery. And in fact interceded for peace and forgiveness (with the military … against reprisals) when some of the misssionarires’ own number were killed near San Diego.

Slavery? The Indians were never slaves, but did participate in the building of the missions. They also benefitted from trade with the Spanish, whose ships brought goods from afar that greatly improved the quality of living … and bought furs and food from the natives as well.

Some devil Serra was. Left a comfortable university job in Spain to spread the word of Jesus in a hostile new world. With a motto of “always forward, never back …” he travelled relentlessly in building the chain of missions, named for Angels and Saints. Again he’d leave the comfort of an established mission to go and build more.

If Serra was a devil … Satan’s house would have been pretty divided. And old Scratch would be tearing his hair out. If demons had hair. 😉

I wonder what the earliest DATE for making such claims against Serra might be?

Never heard any of this in my PUBLIC School’s History of California classes in the 1960s.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I’m done.
Better yet, I just discovered the ignore button so I’m good. Apparently this thread is good enough not to be closed because it’s still open. 🤷

…God Bless. 🙂

Update: kionrightnow.com/news/local-news/vandals-strike-carmel-mission-days-after-serra-canonization/35512998

Very frustrating. 😦

Praying this doesn’t happen again. Or as one of the commenters said on the Facebook page (forgive their typos):
“Pray that the people how did this take responsibility for their actions on this sacred property and that they responsibility for their actions on this sacred property and that they seek reconciliation. seek reconciliation.” This has got to be one of the most hypocritical statements I’ve ever read.
Saint Junipero Serra, pray for us! :signofcross:

You can provide all the historical facts in the world to people like that and it will do no good. They will NEVER accept the truth that the one individual who destroyed California Indians was the first American government who, in 1840, basically rounded them up and imprisoned them in “reservations” with the clear goal of taking their property and removing them from California.

Where is all the moral outrage about that?
Memaw;13320308:
And what about the other native Americans that were treated so terribly by our American government. Didn’t we take their country away from them!! Learn the truth about our history. God Bless, Memaw
HELLO! Picking up where I last posted on the previous page. :DMy husband and I are Americans that live in California. My husband is Scottish and Osage Indian. I am German, Irish, Portuguese and French. We were born in the United States of America.😃 We are very happy to be Americans. Thank you.🙂

Prayer to Saint Junipero Serra

Saint Junipero Serra, your missionary zeal brought the light of Christ to millions. You endured so many hardships, and labored so much that your work resonates today in the hearts of hundreds of millions of Catholics.

Saint Serra, I petition you today to help me deliver the light of Christ through my words and deeds to others. May I instruct by example and faithfully guide others to Christ, just as you so wonderfully did centuries ago.

I pray that you stand beside me, that you grant me the wisdom and words to share. Please intercede for me before the throne of Christ, may you both witness the work I do on His behalf. I offer my labor and my sacrifice to you. Please receive me as your faithful servant, in Christ, My Lord, I pray.

I hope the San Diego Mission is ok. 😦
So far San Diego de Alcala has been fine.

I believe it’s only Carmel and now Santa Cruz that have had issues at the Missions themselves, though at least one statue of Father Serra was beheaded recently at the Monterey Presidio. Based on the geographic location of these attacks (they all seem to be in NorCal) my concern would be more for nearby Missions like San Juan Bautista and Santa Clara (though in the latter case good luck getting away with it seeing as Santa Clara is in the heart of Santa Clara University ;)).

I was at mission Carmel and San Juan Bautista. I worry about the latter. It is very accessible and off the main street. I can’t believe they decapitated the statue at the Presidio. Sorry if people disagree (no I’m not), but this is cowardice and mob mentality. Any excuse to vandalize. If they did their homework they wouldn’t be doing this.

A teenaged girl just found the head of the statue at low tide.
